CDD CERN Drawings Directory User's manual: Version 1.1
CDD (CERN Drawings Directory) is a multi-platform utility which manages engineering drawings made in any division at CERN. The aim of CDD is not to store the graphical drawing itself, but to store a reference with some information related to the drawing. Access to this data is provided via a graphical user interface which is based upon ORACLE Forms and via WWW. Drawings following different numbering systems and different management rules can be handled by CDD. The only condition is that those particular functionalities are well defined. Several drawing systems have been identified in CERN and therefore considered when designing the application. The current version of CDD focuses on systems EST, LEP, ST-IE, SPS, ST-CE and the experiments ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. Other CERN systems could be easily integrated upon demand

Treg depletion followed by intracerebral CpG-ODN injection induce brain tumor rejection
Using brain lymphoma model, we demonstrate that immunotherapy combining Treg depletion (using anti-CD25 mAb PC61) followed by intracranial CpG-ODN administration induced tumor rejection in all treated mice and led to the establishment of a memory antitumor immune response in 60% of them. This protective effect was associated with a recruitment of NK cells and, to a lesser extent, of dendritic cells, B cells and T lymphocytes. NK cell depletion abolished the protective effect of the treatment, confirming a major role of NK cells in brain tumor elimination. Each treatment used alone failed to protect brain tumor bearing mice, revealing the therapeutic benefit of combining Treg depletion and local CpG-ODN injection
Reluplex: An Efficient SMT Solver for Verifying Deep Neural Networks
Deep neural networks have emerged as a widely used and effective means for
tackling complex, real-world problems. However, a major obstacle in applying
them to safety-critical systems is the great difficulty in providing formal
guarantees about their behavior. We present a novel, scalable, and efficient
technique for verifying properties of deep neural networks (or providing
counter-examples). The technique is based on the simplex method, extended to
handle the non-convex Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation function, which
is a crucial ingredient in many modern neural networks. The verification
procedure tackles neural networks as a whole, without making any simplifying
assumptions. We evaluated our technique on a prototype deep neural network
implementation of the next-generation airborne collision avoidance system for
unmanned aircraft (ACAS Xu). Results show that our technique can successfully
prove properties of networks that are an order of magnitude larger than the
largest networks verified using existing methods.Comment: This is the extended version of a paper with the same title that

Rain attenuation prediction model for satellite communications based on the Météo-France ensemble prediction system PEARP
This paper presents an
example of the usage of ensemble weather forecasting for the control of
satellite-based communication systems. Satellite communication systems become
increasingly sensitive to weather conditions as their operating frequency
increases to avoid electromagnetic spectrum congestion and enhance their
capacity. In the microwave domain, electromagnetic waves that are conveying
information are attenuated between the satellite and Earth terminals in the
presence of hydrometeors (mostly rain drops and more marginally cloud
droplets). To maintain a reasonable level of service availability, even with
adverse weather conditions considering the scarcity of amplification power in
spacecraft, fade mitigation techniques have been developed. The general idea
behind those fade mitigation techniques is to reroute, change the
characteristics or reschedule the transmission in the case of too-significant
propagation impairments. For some systems, a scheduling on how to use those
mechanisms some hours in advance is required, making assumptions on the
future weather conditions affecting the link. To this aim the use of weather
forecast data to control the attenuation compensation mechanisms seems of
particular interest to maximize the performances of the communication links
and hence of the associated economic value. A model to forecast the
attenuation on the link based on forecasted rainfall amounts from
deterministic or ensemble weather forecasting is presented and validated. In
a second phase, the model's application to a simplified telecommunication
system allows us to demonstrate the valuable contribution of weather
forecasting in the system's availability optimization or in the system's
throughput optimization. The benefit of using ensemble forecasts rather than
deterministic ones is demonstrated as well.</p
Theory of coherent optical nonlinearities of intersubband transitions in semiconductor quantum wells
We theoretically study the coherent nonlinear response of electrons confined
in semiconductor quantum wells under the effect of an electromagnetic radiation
close to resonance with an intersubband transition. Our approach is based on
the time-dependent Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation stemming from a Hartree
description of Coulomb-interacting electrons. This equation is solved by
standard numerical tools and the results are interpreted in terms of
approximated analytical formulas. For growing intensity, we observe a redshift
of the effective resonance frequency due to the reduction of the electric
dipole moment and the corresponding suppression of the depolarization shift.
The competition between coherent nonlinearities and incoherent saturation
effects is discussed. The strength of the resulting optical nonlinearity is
estimated across different frequency ranges from mid-IR to THz with an eye to
ongoing experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation of intersubband polaritons
and to the speculative exploration of quantum optical phenomena such as
single-photon emission in the mid-IR and THz windows

Segmentation-based video coding system allowing the manipulation of objects
This paper presents a generic video coding algorithm allowing the content-based manipulation of objects. This manipulation is possible thanks to the definition of a spatiotemporal segmentation of the sequences. The coding strategy relies on a joint optimization in the rate-distortion sense of the partition definition and of the coding techniques to be used within each region. This optimization creates the link between the analysis and synthesis parts of the coder. The analysis defines the time evolution of the partition, as well as the elimination or the appearance of regions that are homogeneous either spatially or in motion. The coding of the texture as well as of the partition relies on region-based motion compensation techniques. The algorithm offers a good compromise between the ability to track and manipulate objects and the coding efficiency.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
COVID‐19: The immediate response of European academic dental institutions and future implications for dental education
The COVID‐19 pandemic has had an immediate and dramatic impact on dental education. The Association of Dental Education in Europe decided to carry out an investigation to assess the immediate response of European Academic Dental Institutions. An online survey was sent to both member and non‐member dental schools to investigate the impact on non‐clinical and clinical education, assessment and the well‐being/pastoral care measures implemented. The preliminary findings and discussion are presented in this paper, for the responses collected between the 25th March and 5th April 2020. The survey at this time of publication is ongoing and detailed results can be accessed https://adee.org/covid-19-european-dental-education%E2%80%99s-immediate-response
