Analysing the sustainability of the physical rehabilitation sector in seven fragile countries through multi-stakeholder involvement using a participatory consensus tool
Background: Sustainability is identified by nearly all organisations working in global health as one of the key indicators for project evaluation. Though typically recognised as an essential component for good project management to ensure positive impact, it is rarely applied effectively in practical terms and there are very few practical methods or tools to support implementation and monitoring of sustainable interventions. Further, despite efforts of stakeholders at all levels, the rehabilitation sector is not usually at the top of policy-makersâ agendas, which often results in limited to no funding and makes the task of building sustainability even more challenging at field level
Characterization of Three Carbon- and Nitrogen-Rich Particles from Comet 81P/WILD
Comets may sample the early solar system s complement of volatile-forming elements - including C and N - more fully and reliably than do the terrestrial planets or asteroids. Until recently, all elemental analyses of unambiguously cometary material were carried out remotely. The return of the Stardust mission makes it possible to analyze documented material from P81/Wild 2 in the laboratory Wild 2 particles fragmented when they stopped in the aerogel collectors. We have studied three fragments thought to be rich in C and N by using several techniques: FTIR to characterize organic matter; synchrotron-induced x-ray fluorescence (SXRF) to determine Fe and certain element/Fe ratios; SEM to image sample morphology and to detect semiquantitatively Mg, Al, Si, Ca, and Fe; and nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) to measure C, N, O, and Si

The Hedgehog signaling pathway is essential for embryogenesis and for tissue homeostasis in the adult. However, it may induce malignancies in a number of tissues when constitutively activated, and it may also have a role in other forms of normal and maladaptive growth. Cyclopamine, a naturally occurring steroidal alkaloid, specifically inhibits the Hedgehog pathway by binding directly to Smoothened, an important Hedgehog response element. To use cyclopamine as a tool to explore and/or inhibit the Hedgehog pathway in vivo, a substantial quantity is required, and as a practical matter cyclopamine has been effectively unavailable for usage in animals larger than mice

Climatic predictors of species distributions neglect biophysiologically meaningful variables
This is the final version. Available on open access from Wiley via the DOI in this record.Aim: Species distribution models (SDMs) have played a pivotal role in predicting how species might respond to climate change. To generate reliable and realistic predictions from these models
requires the use of climate variables that adequately capture physiological responses of species to
climate and therefore provide a proximal link between climate and their distributions. Here, we
examine whether the climate variables used in plant SDMs are different from those known to
influence directly plant physiology.
Location: Global.
Methods: We carry out an extensive, systematic review of the climate variables used to model the
distributions of plant species and provide comparison to the climate variables identified as
important in the plant physiology literature. We calculate the top ten SDM and physiology
variables at 2.5 degree spatial resolution for the globe and use principal component analyses and
multiple regression to assess similarity between the climatic variation described by both
variable sets.
Results: We find that the most commonly used SDM variables do not reflect the most important
physiological variables and differ in two main ways: (i) SDM variables rely on seasonal or annual
rainfall as simple proxies of water available to plants and neglect more direct measures such as
soil water content; and (ii) SDM variables are typically averaged across seasons or years and
overlook the importance of climatic events within the critical growth period of plants. We
identify notable differences in their spatial gradients globally and show where distal variables
may be less reliable proxies for the variables to which species are known to respond.
Main conclusions: There is a growing need for the development of accessible, fine-resolution
global climate surfaces of physiological variables. This would provide a means to improve the
reliability of future range predictions from SDMs and support efforts to conserve biodiversity in a
changing climate
A multi-component flood risk assessment in the Maresme coast (NW Mediterranean)
Coastal regions are the areas most threatened by natural hazards, with floods being the most frequent and significant threat in terms of their induced impacts, and therefore, any management scheme requires their evaluation. In coastal areas, flooding is a hazard associated with various processes acting at different scales: coastal storms, flash floods, and sea level rise (SLR). In order to address the problem as a whole, this study presents a methodology to undertake a preliminary integrated risk assessment that determines the magnitude of the different flood processes (flash flood, marine storm, SLR) and their associated consequences, taking into account their temporal and spatial scales. The risk is quantified using specific indicators to assess the magnitude of the hazard (for each component) and the consequences in a common scale. This allows for a robust comparison of the spatial risk distribution along the coast in order to identify both the areas at greatest risk and the risk components that have the greatest impact. This methodology is applied on the Maresme coast (NW Mediterranean, Spain), which can be considered representative of developed areas of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The results obtained characterise this coastline as an area of relatively low overall risk, although some hot spots have been identified with high-risk values, with flash flooding being the principal risk process
Reconciling the biogeography of an invader through recent and historic genetic patterns: the case of topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva
© 2018 The Author(s) The genetic variability and population structure of introduced species in their native range are potentially important determinants of their invasion success, yet data on native populations are often poorly represented in relevant studies. Consequently, to determine the contribution of genetic structuring in the native range of topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva to their high invasion success in Europe, we used a dataset comprising of 19 native and 11 non-native populations. A total of 666 samples were analysed at 9 polymorphic microsatellite loci and sequenced for 597 bp of mitochondrial DNA. The analysis revealed three distinct lineages in the native range, of which two haplogroups were prevalent in China (100%), with a general split around the Qinling Mountains. Dating of both haplogroups closely matched past geological events. More recently, its distribution has been influenced by fish movements in aquaculture, resulting in gene flow between previously separated populations in Northern and Southern China. Their phylogeography in Europe indicate as few as two introductions events and two dispersal routes. Microsatellite data revealed native populations had higher genetic diversity than those in the invasive range, a contrast to previous studies on P. parva. This study confirms the importance of extensive sampling in both the native and non-native range of invasive species in evaluating the influence of genetic variability on invasion success
Self-Reactivities to the Non-Erythroid Alpha Spectrin Correlate with Cerebral Malaria in Gabonese Children
BACKGROUND: Hypergammaglobulinemia and polyclonal B-cell activation commonly occur in Plasmodium sp. infections. Some of the antibodies produced recognize self-components and are correlated with disease severity in P. falciparum malaria. However, it is not known whether some self-reactive antibodies produced during P. falciparum infection contribute to the events leading to cerebral malaria (CM). We show here a correlation between self-antibody responses to a human brain protein and high levels of circulating TNF alpha (TNFα), with the manifestation of CM in Gabonese children. METHODOLOGY: To study the role of self-reactive antibodies associated to the development of P. falciparum cerebral malaria, we used a combination of quantitative immunoblotting and multivariate analysis to analyse correlation between the reactivity of circulating IgG with a human brain protein extract and TNFα concentrations in cohorts of uninfected controls (UI) and P. falciparum-infected Gabonese children developing uncomplicated malaria (UM), severe non-cerebral malaria (SNCM), or CM. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: The repertoire of brain antigens recognized by plasma IgGs was more diverse in infected than in UI individuals. Anti-brain reactivity was significantly higher in the CM group than in the UM and SNCM groups. IgG self-reactivity to brain antigens was also correlated with plasma IgG levels and age. We found that 90% of CM patients displayed reactivity to a high-molecular mass band containing the spectrin non-erythroid alpha chain. Reactivity with this band was correlated with high TNFα concentrations in CM patients. These results strongly suggest that an antibody response to brain antigens induced by P. falciparum infection may be associated with pathogenic mechanisms in patients developing CM
