Comparison of meat quality and fatty acid profile in slow-growing chicken genotypes fed diets supplemented with Origanum vulgare or Melissa officinalis leaves under the organic system under the organic system
This study was conducted to compare the meat quality and selected fatty acids profile of two different slow-growing broiler genotypes (Hubbard S757; S757 and Hubbard Grey Barred JA; GB-JA) fed diets supplemented with dry oregano (Origanum vulgare L., OV; 10 g/kg basal diets) or lemon balm leaves (Melissa officinalis L., MO; 10 g/kg basal diets) under organic housing system. It is concluded that slow-growing genotypes had no effect on L* parameter of the breast, thigh and abdominal fat meat quality. Two hundred and forty chicks were allocated randomly into 4 experimental groups according to a 2x2 factorial arrange-ment. Birds were raised until 98 days in order to achieve an acceptable market live weight. The b* colours of breast and thigh meat were significant different among genotypes and also a* colour of breast meat of GB-JA increased (P<0.05). Slow-growing female broilers produced a higher dry matter content and lower fat content of breast meat as compared with males. There were the higher concentrations of linoleic (C18:2n-6) acid and the lower concentrations of linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) in genotypes fed with supplemented dry oregano or lemon balm leaves diet. Sex affected total unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) composition, polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and linoleic acid, were higher in slow growing males breast meat as compared with females breast meat. These results suggested that the slow-growing genotypes might had influenced the colour of breast and thigh meat, although overall meat quality was not affected under the organic system.

Yetişkinlerde travmatik olay yaşama yaygınlığı, travma sonrası stres bozukluğu ve travma sonrası gelişim'in değerlendirilmesi
TÜBİTAK SOBAG Proje15.08.2009The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of various traumatic life events and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among adults living in Erzincan, Ankara and Kocaeli provinces in Turkey. The relationship of socio-demographic characteristics, type of traumatic event and its characteristics and personality traits with PTSD and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) were also evaluated. The study was conducted with a sample of 1253 adults, from a stratified cluster sample provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute. The research instrument containing a sociodemographic information form, the Post Traumatic Diagnostic Scale, Post Traumatic Growth Inventory, Basic Personality Traits Inventory and Brief Symptom Checklist was administered to participants in their homes by trained interviewers. The results showed that 84%(n= 1055) of participants reported experiencing at least one traumatic event. Six hundred and seventy five (64%) of these were female and 389 (36%) were male. Compared to females, males reported accidents, physical violence, war experiences, being imprisoned and torture events more often. The rates of PTSD in the whole sample was 9.9%(n=124). Females had a significantly higher rate of PTSD (77.4%) as compared to males (%22.6). Furthermore, the prevalence of PTSD varied for different types of traumatic events. PTSD rates following human made/deliberate traumatic events (39.6%) and death/illness (24.9%) were higher than the rates following accidents (14.8%) and natural disasters (13.3%). After controlling for the effects of sociodemographic variables, low extraversion, high agreeableness and high neuroticism significantly predicted the severity of post traumatic stress reactions. From among the event related variables, the impact of the traumatic event and the degree of functional impairment due to the event, experiencing death/illness and human made/deliberate events rather than accidents amd natural disasters 15 and experiencing more traumatic events appeared as significant predictors of post traumatic stress reactions. For PTG, after controlling for the effects of sociodemographic variables, agreeableness, openness to experience and conscientiousness appeared as significant predictors. From among the event related variables, the impact of the traumatic event, the severity of post traumatic stress reactions, and experiencing human made/deliberate, death/illness and natural disasters rather than accidents were related to PTG. The findings of the study are discussed in the scope of the existing literature and suggestions for the planning of mental health services and trauma training programs are offered

Venous dissection due to brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistula puncture
Arteriovenous fistula is the most important vascular access for hemodialysis for chronic renal disease. It is quite easy to puncture the fistula when hemodialysis is needed. On the other hand, it is more difficult to cannulate the native fistulas than the grafts; therefore, puncture-related complications occur more in the native fistulas. These complications are hematoma, aneurysm formation, thrombosis, and venous wall dissection during hemodialysis, although this is extremely rare. A 48-yearold male patient with end-stage renal disease had venous wall dissection diagnosed by ultrasonography. This case report presents this rare pathology in a case treated with supportive measures
Effect of brine and dry salting methods on the physicochemical and microbial quality of chub (Squalius cephalus Linnaeus, 1758)
The present study, looks at the physicochemical and microbiological quality changes that occur due to different salting techniques (20% salt concentration) of chub (Squalius cephalus) and when stored in 4 ± 0.5 °C. Samples of fish from each group was taken on the 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120th day and was analyzed for nutritional component (crude protein, lipid, moisture, crude ash), pH value, salt content and the microbial flora (total mesophilic aerobic bacteria count, total coliform, total psychrophilic aerobic bacteria count, yeast and mould). It was determined that crude protein, lipid, crude ash and salt amounts in the group where dry salting method was applied were higher than the group where brine salting occurred, in addition protein and lipid values decreased as storage period was longer (P < 0.05). It was determined that there is an increase in total aerobic mesophilic, psycrophile bacteria and enumeration of yeast and mould as storage period increased, while coliform bacteria decreased (P < 0.05).This work was supported by Munzur University Scientific Projects Coordination Department (Project Number: YLTUB012-03)
