    Processing with cell assemblies

    Cell assemblies (CAs) were posited by Hebb almost 60 years ago as the unit of representation in the brain. Recent results in the field of neuroscience indicate that CAs are likely to exist, at least in the mammalian brain. The CABot project uses simulations of CAs formed from individual neurons as a basis for learning and behaviour. This paper proves that a network of CAs, as described by Hebb and as implemented in CABot, is complete with respect to structured program theory. It follows that it is possible to implement the fundamental operations of program execution in a biological network

    Methylmercury exposure during early Xenopus laevis development affects cell proliferation and death but not neural progenitor specification

    Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread environmental toxin that preferentially and adversely affects developing organisms. To investigate the impact of MeHg toxicity on the formation of the vertebrate nervous system at physiologically relevant concentrations, we designed a graded phenotype scale for evaluating Xenopus laevis embryos exposed to MeHg in solution. Embryos displayed a range of abnormalities in response to MeHg, particularly in brain development, which is influenced by both MeHg concentration and the number of embryos per ml of exposure solution. A TC50 of similar to 50 mu g/l and LC50 of similar to 100 mu g/l were found when maintaining embryos at a density of one per ml, and both increased with increasing embryo density. In situ hybridization and microarray analysis showed no significant change in expression of early neural patterning genes including sox2, en2, or delta; however a noticeable decrease was observed in the terminal neural differentiation genes GAD and xGAT, but not xVGlut. PCNA, a marker for proliferating cells, was negatively correlated with MeHg dose, with a significant reduction in cell number in the forebrain and spinal cord of exposed embryos by tadpole stages. Conversely, the number of apoptotic cells in neural regions detected by a TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling) assay was significantly increased. These results provide evidence that disruption of embryonic neural development by MeHg may not be directly due to a loss of neural progenitor specification and gene transcription, but to a more general decrease in cell proliferation and increase in cell death throughout the developing nervous system.     Coordination and transfer

    We study the ability of subjects to transfer principles between related coordination games. Subjects play a class of order statistic coordination games closely related to the well-known minimum (or weak-link) and median games (Van Huyck et al. in Am Econ Rev 80:234–248, 1990, Q J Econ 106(3):885–910, 1991). When subjects play a random sequence of games with differing order statistics, play is less sensitive to the order statistic than when a fixed order statistic is used throughout. This is consistent with the prediction of a simple learning model with transfer. If subjects play a series of similar stag hunt games, play converges to the payoff dominant equilibrium when a convention emerges, replicating the main result of Rankin et al. (Games Econ Behav 32:315–337, 2000). When these subjects subsequently play a random sequence of order statistic games, play is shifted towards the payoff dominant equilibrium relative to subjects without previous experience. The data is consistent with subjects absorbing a general principle, play of the payoff dominant equilibrium, and applying it in a new related setting

    We perform an experiment which provides a laboratory replica of some important features of the welfare state. In the experiment, all individuals in a group decide whether to make a costly effort, which produces a random (independent) outcome for each one of them. The group members then vote on whether to redistribute the resulting and commonly known total sum of earnings equally amongst themselves. This game has two equilibria, if played once. In one of them, all players make effort and there is little redistribution.     Geometric representations for minimalist grammars

    We reformulate minimalist grammars as partial functions on term algebras for strings and trees. Using filler/role bindings and tensor product representations, we construct homomorphisms for these data structures into geometric vector spaces. We prove that the structure-building functions as well as simple processors for minimalist languages can be realized by piecewise linear operators in representation space. We also propose harmony, i.e. the distance of an intermediate processing step from the final well-formed state in representation space, as a measure of processing complexity. Finally, we illustrate our findings by means of two particular arithmetic and fractal representations.Comment: 43 pages, 4 figure

    The limit to behavioral inertia and the power of default in voluntary contribution games

    It is well documented that people are reluctant to switch from a default option. We experimentally test the robustness of this behavioral inertia in a collective decision-making setting by varying the default option type and the decision-making environment. We examine the impacts of automatic-participation and no-participation default options on subjects’ participation in a public goods provision and their contributions. Two variants of public goods game are employed: the linear and the threshold public goods games. The study shows the evidence of partial stickiness rather than complete stickiness of default options as indicated in empirical studies. Our experimental results square with the evidence of behavioral inertia only when the automatic-participation default is used. This default boosts contributions in the linear public goods game but not in the threshold public goods game. The evidence of partial stickiness is robust to the variation of the game employed, but the effect on contribution is sensitive to it

    El estudio realizado buscó determinar la influencia de las Tecnologías de la información y comunicación en el aprendizaje del área de ciencia y ambiente, objetivo que se consolidó con la propuesta, nuevas tecnologías para desarrollar aprendizajes significativos, en el área de Ciencia y Ambiente, en estudiantes del sexto grado de Educación Primaria de la Institución Educativa Nª 16173, Santa Rosa- Jaén. El tipo de estudio fue de tipo mixto de diseño cuasi experimental. La población y muestra de estudio estuvo conformada por 22 estudiantes comprendidos entre los 6 y 12 años de edad, de los cuales el 55% fue de sexo femenino y 45% masculino. El instrumento estuvo basado en un cuestionario para medir conocimiento, conformado por 8 preguntas; aplicación, organizada en 4 preguntas y el razonamiento mediante 4 interrogantes y con un coeficiente de fiabilidad determinada por el alfa de Crombach de 0,889, también se recurrió a medidas de tendencias central: media aritmética, moda, mediana. Finalmente, se concluye, asumiendo que el programa “nuevas tecnologías de la información”, incidió significativamente en el desarrollo de un conjunto de capacidades en los estudiantes del sexto grado de educación primaria, tales como: selecciona medios o herramientas tic para generar redes de interaprendizaje, selecciona y organiza información, organiza conceptos y teorías, comprende y fundamenta conocimientos científicos, problematiza situaciones y analiza datos en función de las implicancia del saber y hacer científico.Tesi

    A brain-inspired cognitive system that mimics the dynamics of human thought

    In recent years, some impressive AI systems have been built that can play games and answer questions about large quantities of data. However, we are still a very long way from AI systems that can think and learn in a human-like way. We have a great deal of information about how the brain works and can simulate networks of hundreds of millions of neurons. So it seems likely that we could use our neuroscientific knowledge to build brain-inspired artificial intelligence that acts like humans on similar timescales. This paper describes an AI system that we have built using a brain-inspired network of artificial spiking neurons. On a word recognition and colour naming task our system behaves like human subjects on a similar timescale. In the longer term, this type of AI technology could lead to more flexible general purpose artificial intelligence and to more natural human-computer interaction

    The Effects of Social Ties on Coordination: Conceptual Foundations for an Empirical Analysis

    International audienceThis paper investigates the influence that social ties can have on behavior. After defining the concept of social ties that we consider, we introduce an original model of social ties. The impact of such ties on social preferences is studied in a coordination game with outside option. We provide a detailed game theoretical analysis of this game while considering various types of players, i.e., self-interest maximizing, inequity averse, and fair agents. In addition to these approaches that require strategic reasoning in order to reach some equilibrium, we also present an alternative hypothesis that relies on the concept of team reasoning. After having discussed the differences between the latter and our model of social ties, we show how an experiment can be designed so as to discriminate among the models presented in the paper
