Attentional load and sensory competition in human vision: Modulation of fMRI responses by load fixation during task-irrelevant stimulation in the peripheral visual field.
Perceptual suppression of distractors may depend on both endogenous and exogenous factors, such as attentional load of the current task and sensory competition among simultaneous stimuli, respectively. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare these two types of attentional effects and examine how they may interact in the human brain. We varied the attentional load of a visual monitoring task performed on a rapid stream at central fixation without altering the central stimuli themselves, while measuring the impact on fMRI responses to task-irrelevant peripheral checkerboards presented either unilaterally or bilaterally. Activations in visual cortex for irrelevant peripheral stimulation decreased with increasing attentional load at fixation. This relative decrease was present even in V1, but became larger for successive visual areas through to V4. Decreases in activation for contralateral peripheral checkerboards due to higher central load were more pronounced within retinotopic cortex corresponding to 'inner' peripheral locations relatively near the central targets than for more eccentric 'outer' locations, demonstrating a predominant suppression of nearby surround rather than strict 'tunnel vision' during higher task load at central fixation. Contralateral activations for peripheral stimulation in one hemifield were reduced by competition with concurrent stimulation in the other hemifield only in inferior parietal cortex, not in retinotopic areas of occipital visual cortex. In addition, central attentional load interacted with competition due to bilateral versus unilateral peripheral stimuli specifically in posterior parietal and fusiform regions. These results reveal that task-dependent attentional load, and interhemifield stimulus-competition, can produce distinct influences on the neural responses to peripheral visual stimuli within the human visual system. These distinct mechanisms in selective visual processing may be integrated within posterior parietal areas, rather than earlier occipital cortex
On the calibration of the relation between geometric albedo and polarimetric properties for the asteroids
We present a new extensive analysis of the old problem of finding a
satisfactory calibration of the relation between the geometric albedo and some
measurable polarization properties of the asteroids. To achieve our goals, we
use all polarimetric data at our disposal. For the purposes of calibration, we
use a limited sample of objects for which we can be confident to know the
albedo with good accuracy, according to previous investigations of other
authors. We find a new set of updated calibration coefficients for the
classical slope - albedo relation, but we generalize our analysis and we
consider also alternative possibilities, including the use of other
polarimetric parameters, one being proposed here for the first time, and the
possibility to exclude from best-fit analyzes the asteroids having low albedos.

A panchromatic analysis of starburst galaxy M82: Probing the dust properties
(Abridged) We combine NUV, optical and IR imaging of the nearby starburst
galaxy M82 to explore the properties of the dust both in the interstellar
medium of the galaxy and the dust entrained in the superwind. The three NUV
filters of Swift/UVOT enable us to probe in detail the properties of the
extinction curve in the region around the 2175A bump. The NUV colour-colour
diagram strongly rules out a Calzetti-type law, which can either reflect
intrinsic changes in the dust properties or in the star formation history
compared to starbursts well represented by such an attenuation law. We
emphasize that it is mainly in the NUV region where a standard Milky-Way-type
law is preferred over a Calzetti law. The age and dust distribution of the
stellar populations is consistent with the scenario of an encounter with M81 in
the recent 400 Myr. The radial gradients of the NUV and optical colours in the
superwind region support the hypothesis that the emission in the wind cone is
driven by scattering from dust grains entrained in the ejecta. The observed
wavelength dependence reveals either a grain size distribution , where is the size of the grain, or a flatter distribution with a
maximum size cutoff, suggesting that only small grains are entrained in the

Comparative effects of mindfulness and support and information group interventions for parents of adults with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities
This study evaluated two community based interventions for parents of adults with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Parents in the mindfulness group reported significant reductions in psychological distress, while parents in the support and information group did not. Reduced levels of distress in the mindfulness group were maintained at 20 weeks follow-up. Mindfulness scores and mindful parenting scores and related constructs (e.g., self-compassion) did not differ between the two groups. Results suggest the psychological components of the mindfulness based group intervention were effective over and above the non-specific effects of group processes and informal support

On the genesis of the Haumea system
The scenarios proposed in the literature for the genesis of the system formed by the dwarf planet 136108 Haumea, its two satellites and a group of some 10 bodies (the family) with semimajor axes, eccentricities and inclinations close to Haumea's values, are analysed against collisional, physical, dynamical and statistical arguments in order to assess their likelihood. All scenarios based on collisional events are reviewed under physical arguments and the corresponding formation probabilities in a collisional environment are evaluated according to the collisional evolution model alicandep. An alternative mechanism is proposed based on the potential possibility of (quasi-) independent origin of the family with respect to Haumea and its satellites. As a general conclusion the formation of the Haumea system is a low-probability event in the currently assumed frame for the evolution of the outer Solar system. However, it is possible that current knowledge is missing some key element in the whole story that may contribute to increase the odds for the formation of such a system.Facultad de Ciencias AstronĂłmicas y GeofĂsica
Economic Aspects of Sanitation in Developing Countries
Improved sanitation has been shown to have great impacts on people's health and economy. However, the progress of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on halving the proportion of people without access to clean water and basic sanitation by 2015 has thus far been delayed. One of the reasons for the slow progress is that policy makers, as well as the general public, have not fully understood the importance of the improved sanitation solutions. This paper, by gathering relevant research findings, aims to report and discuss currently available evidence on the economic aspects of sanitation, including the economic impacts of unimproved sanitation and the costs and economic benefits of some common improved sanitation options in developing countries.; DATA USED IN THIS PAPER WERE OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT INFORMATION SOURCES: international and national journal articles and reports, web-based statistics, and fact sheets. We used both online search and hand search methods to gather the information.; Scientific evidence has demonstrated that the economic cost associated with poor sanitation is substantial. At the global level, failure to meet the MDG water and sanitation target would have ramifications in the area of US142 billion (US28 for sanitation. Annually, this translates to roughly US1 invested, achieving the sanitation MDG target and universal sanitation access in the non-OECD countries would result in a global return of US11.2, respectively.; Given the current state of knowledge, sanitation is undeniably a profitable investment. It is clear that achieving the MDG sanitation target not only saves lives but also provides a foundation for economic growth
Collimator design for a clinical brain SPECT/MRI insert
This project's goal is to design a SPECT insert for a clinical MRI system for simultaneous brain SPECT/MR imaging. We assume the stationary SPECT insert will consist of two rings of âŒ5x5-cm SiPM-based detectors insensitive to magnetic fields, with 0.8-mm intrinsic resolution. The maximum diameter is 44.5 cm, the minimum diameter is 33 cm to accommodate the patient and MRI receive/transmit coil, and the FOV has a 20 cm diameter.
We have compared eight collimator designs: single-, 2x2-, 3x3- and 5+2œ- pinhole, and single-, 2-, 3- and 1+2œ-slit slit-slat, where œ-pinholes/slits are shared between two detectors. Analytical geometric efficiency was calculated for an activity distribution corresponding to a human brain and a target resolution of 10 mm FWHM at the centre of the FOV. Noise-free data were simulated with and without depth-of-interaction (DOI) information, and reconstructed for uniform, Defrise, Derenzo, and Zubal brain phantoms. For DOI it is assumed that the crystal's first and second half can be differentiated.
Comparing the multi-pinhole and multi-slit slit-slat collimators, the former gives better reconstructed uniformity and trans-axial resolution, while the latter gives better axial resolution. Although the 2x2-pinhole and 2-slit designs give the highest sensitivities, they result in a sub-optimal utilization of the detector FOV. The best options are therefore the 5+2Âœ-pinhole and the 1+2Âœ-slit systems, with sensitivities of 4.9*10â4 and 4.0*10â4, respectively. The brain phantom reconstructions with multi-pinhole collimator are superior as compared to slit-slat, especially in terms of symmetry and realistic activity distribution. DOI information reduces artefacts and improves uniformity in geometric phantoms, although the difference is small for the brain phantom. These results favour a multi-pinhole configuration

DLAL is a restriction of linear logic where only functional programs with
polynomial evaluation cost can be typed, we obtain the core of a functional
programming setting for binary field arithmetic with built-in polynomial
complexity

Thorium Energy Futures
The potential for thorium as an alternative or supplement to uranium in fission power generation has long been recognised, and several reactors, of various types, have already operated using thorium-based fuels. Accelerator Driven Subcritical (ADS) systems have benefits and drawbacks when compared to conventional critical thorium reactors, for both solid and molten salt fuels. None of the four options â liquid or solid, with or without an accelerator â can yet be rated as better or worse than the other three, given today's knowledge.
