Relative abundance of amphibians in forest canopy gaps of natural origin vs. timber harvest origin
Small-scale canopy gaps created by logging may retain adequate habitat structure to maintain amphibian abundance. We used pitfalls with drift fences to measure relative abundance of amphibians in 44 harvested gaps, 19 natural treefall gaps, and 36 closed-canopy forest plots. Metamorphs had relatively lower capture rates in large harvest gaps for Ambystoma maculatum, Lithobates catesbeianus, L. clamitans, and L. sylvaticus but we did not detect statistically significant (p < 0.1) differences among gap types for Lithobates palustris metamorphs. L. clamitans juveniles and L. sylvaticus juveniles and adults had relatively lower capture rates in large harvest gaps. For juvenile-adult A. maculatum, we caught relatively fewer individuals in all gap types than in closed-canopy areas. Some groups with overall lower capture rates (immature Plethodon cinereus, juvenile L. palustris) had mixed differences among gap types, and Notophthalmus viridescens (efts) and adult P. cinereus showed no differences among gap types. One species, L. clamitans, was captured more often at gap edges than gap centers. These results suggest that harvest gaps, especially small gaps, provided habitat similar to natural gaps for some, but not all, amphibian species or life-stages
Modulation of ecosystem services by animal personalities
Conservationists rarely consider the roles individuals, with their own unique behavior, physiology, and genome, play in shaping ecosystem processes and consequently ecosystem services, but this is changing. An ongoing surge in research on animal personalities (that is, behavioral differences among individuals that are consistent over time and across contexts) is exposing the ecological roles of individuals to scientific scrutiny. Here, we present four broad examples of ecosystem services that are likely to be shaped by personalities: (1) pollination and seed dispersal, (2) regulation of pest species, (3) ecotourism, and (4) maintenance of soil quality. Although researchers have suggested diverse links between animal personality and ecosystem function, very few have examined this association. We outline a four-step process for quantifying and validating these linkages, leading to application for conservation practitioners, and conclude by recommending that accounting for behavioral variation should be incorporated into the management of ecosystem services
High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission From Blazars: EGRET Observations
We will present a summary of the observations of blazars by the Energetic
Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory
(CGRO). EGRET has detected high energy gamma-ray emission at energies greater
than 100 MeV from more that 50 blazars. These sources show inferred isotropic
luminosities as large as ergs s. One of the most
remarkable characteristics of the EGRET observations is that the gamma-ray
luminosity often dominates the bolometric power of the blazar. A few of the
blazars are seen to exhibit variability on very short time-scales of one day or
less. The combination of high luminosities and time variations seen in the
gamma-ray data indicate that gamma-rays are an important component of the
relativistic jet thought to characterize blazars. Currently most models for
blazars involve a beaming scenario. In leptonic models, where electrons are the
primary accelerated particles, gamma-ray emission is believed to be due to
inverse Compton scattering of low energy photons, although opinions differ as
to the source of the soft photons. Hardronic models involve secondary
production or photomeson production followed by pair cascades, and predict

Decision Problems for Nash Equilibria in Stochastic Games
We analyse the computational complexity of finding Nash equilibria in
stochastic multiplayer games with -regular objectives. While the
existence of an equilibrium whose payoff falls into a certain interval may be
undecidable, we single out several decidable restrictions of the problem.
First, restricting the search space to stationary, or pure stationary,
equilibria results in problems that are typically contained in PSPACE and NP,
respectively. Second, we show that the existence of an equilibrium with a
binary payoff (i.e. an equilibrium where each player either wins or loses with
probability 1) is decidable. We also establish that the existence of a Nash
equilibrium with a certain binary payoff entails the existence of an
equilibrium with the same payoff in pure, finite-state strategies.Comment: 22 pages, revised versio
Critical behavior of the three-dimensional XY universality class
We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the
three-dimensional XY universality class. We find alpha=-0.0146(8),
gamma=1.3177(5), nu=0.67155(27), eta=0.0380(4), beta=0.3485(2), and
delta=4.780(2). We observe a discrepancy with the most recent experimental
estimate of alpha; this discrepancy calls for further theoretical and
experimental investigations. Our results are obtained by combining Monte Carlo
simulations based on finite-size scaling methods, and high-temperature
expansions. Two improved models (with suppressed leading scaling corrections)
are selected by Monte Carlo computation. The critical exponents are computed
from high-temperature expansions specialized to these improved models. By the
same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization
expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by
means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of
state in the whole critical region. We also determine the specific-heat

An unfolding signifier: London's Baltic Exchange in Tallinn
In the summer of 2007 an unusual cargo arrived at Muuga and Paldiski harbors outside Tallinn. It consisted of nearly 50 containers holding over 1,000 tons of building material ranging from marble columns, staircases and fireplaces, to sculpted allegorical figures, wooden paneling and old-fashioned telephone booths. They were once part of the Baltic Exchange in the City of London. Soon they will become facets of the landscape of Tallinn. The following article charts this remarkable story and deploys this fragmented monument to analyze three issues relating to the Estonian capital: the relocation of the âBronze Soldierâ, the demolition of the Sakala Culture Center, and Tallinnâs future role as European Cultural Capital in 2011
The effects of weather and climate change on dengue
There is much uncertainty about the future impact of climate change on vector-borne diseases. Such uncertainty reflects the difficulties in modelling the complex interactions between disease, climatic and socioeconomic determinants. We used a comprehensive panel dataset from Mexico covering 23 years of province-specific dengue reports across nine climatic regions to estimate the impact of weather on dengue, accounting for the effects of non-climatic factors
Star forming dwarf galaxies
Star forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) have a high gas content and low
metallicities, reminiscent of the basic entities in hierarchical galaxy
formation scenarios. In the young universe they probably also played a major
role in the cosmic reionization. Their abundant presence in the local volume
and their youthful character make them ideal objects for detailed studies of
the initial stellar mass function (IMF), fundamental star formation processes
and its feedback to the interstellar medium. Occasionally we witness SFDGs
involved in extreme starbursts, giving rise to strongly elevated production of
super star clusters and global superwinds, mechanisms yet to be explored in
more detail. SFDGs is the initial state of all dwarf galaxies and the relation
to the environment provides us with a key to how different types of dwarf
galaxies are emerging. In this review we will put the emphasis on the exotic
starburst phase, as it seems less important for present day galaxy evolution

Inferring from an imprecise PlackettâLuce model : application to label ranking
Learning ranking models is a difficult task, in which data may be scarce and cautious predictions desirable. To address such issues, we explore the extension of the popular parametric probabilistic PlackettâLuce model, often used to model rankings, to the imprecise setting where estimated parameters are set-valued. In particular, we study how to achieve cautious or conservative inference with it, and illustrate their application on label ranking problems, a specific supervised learning task
