Stratified separated flow around a mountain with an inversion layer below the mountain top
This paper presents analytical and numerical results for separated stratified inviscid flow over and around an isolated mountain in the limit of small Fronde number. The vertical density profile consists of a lower strongly stratified layer whose depth is just less than that of the mountain. It is separated from a semi-infinite upper stably stratified layer by a thin, highly stable, inversion layer. The paper aims to provide, for this particular profile, a thorough analysis of the three-dimensional separated flow over a mountain top with strong stratification. The Froude numbers F and F, of the lower layer and the interface are small with F-1 << F << 1, but the upper-layer Froude number is arbitrary. The flow at each height in the lower layer is governed by the two-dimensional Euler equations and moves horizontally around the mountain. It is given by a modification of a previous model using Kirchhoff free-streamline theory for the separated flow region downstream of the mountain. The pressure variations associated with the lower-layer flow are of the same order as the dynamic head and induce significant displacements of the inversion layer. When the inversion is near the top of the mountain these deflections are of the same order as the height of the projecting part of the mountain top and combine with the flow over the mountain top to excite vertically propagating internal waves in the upper layer. The resultant pressure field, vertical stream surface displacements, and surface streamlines in the upper layer are described consistently in the hydrostatic limit. Many of the features of the upper flow, including the perturbations of the critical dividing streamlines, are similar to those in flows with uniform stable stratification at low Froude number. Comparisons are made with experiments and approximate models for these summit flows based on the assumption that the dividing streamlines have small vertical displacement
Cenozoic Contourites in the Eastern Great Australian Bight, Offshore Southern Australia: Implications For the Onset of the Leeuwin Current
Thermohaline oceanic currents influence global heat transfer, controlling local and global variations in climate, biodiversity, and the terrestrial biosphere. Paleoceanographic studies typically use biostratigraphic and geochemical proxies to reconstruct the dynamics of these currents in Earth's ancient oceans, although seismic reflection data have also been successfully employed, most commonly in the North Atlantic Ocean. Here we use 2D seismic reflection data from the Ceduna Sub-basin, Great Australian Bight, offshore southern Australia, to describe middle Eocene to Recent contourites deposited in an overall carbonate-dominated succession. These deposits comprise large (100 m wavelength by up to 50 m tall) bedforms and deep (10–90 m), wide (up to 3 km) erosional scours. The scours are particularly well developed at one specific stratigraphic level, defining moats that encircle middle Eocene shield volcanoes, which formed syndepositional bathymetric highs. We suggest that sediment erosion, transport, and deposition record middle Eocene initiation of the Leeuwin Current, one of the most important ocean currents in the southern hemisphere. Deepest seabed scouring occurs in the middle of the middle Eocene to Recent sequence, and may reflect middle Miocene waxing of the so-called “proto-Leeuwin Current,” possibly driven by changes in ocean circulation patterns caused by the Miocene Global Optimum. The results of this seismic reflection-based study are consistent with results derived from other paleoceanographic proxies, thereby highlighting the continued key role seismic reflection data have in understanding the occurrence, geographical distribution, and significance of ancient ocean currents
Narratives of Chronic Pain in Sport
Sports injury research has predominantly focused on acute injuries, often overlooking the
complexities that may be associated with chronic injury. Consequently, the aim of the present
study was to understand the experiences of individuals who continued to take part in sport with
a chronic injury. Using a narrative methodology, 10 athletes who had experienced chronic pain
for at least one year took part in interviews which asked them to narrate their story of pain.
Results identify the imprisonment narrative used to describe chronic injury and consider that
the causes of this “imprisonment” may be both physical and environmental. Further, this study
illustrates how athletes have coped with chronic pain, emphasizing the body-self relationship
and the difficulties associated with adapted sport. These findings have important implications
for practitioners working with injured athletes, emphasizing that the experiences of athletes in
chronic pain may differ considerably from those in acute pain
Relationships Among Self-Efficacy, Social Support, Social Problem Solving, and Self-Management in a Rural Sample Living With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Self-management behaviors are important for control of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Therefore, determining factors that promote effective self-management behaviors
may be significant for improving the well-being of patients with type 2 diabetes
mellitus. This study examined relationships among self-efficacy, social support,
social problem solving, and diabetes self-management behaviors. Further, this study
evaluated whether social support and social problem solving were mediators of the
relationship between self-efficacy and diabetes self-management behaviors in those
living with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Using a cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design, data from a convenience
sample of 152 rural people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus were examined. Findings
indicated that self-efficacy was a strong predictor of diabetes self-management.
The effect of social support on diabetes self-management differed among men and
women in the sample. Social support and social problem solving were significantly
associated with diabetes self-management in men. Neither social support nor social
problem solving were mediators of the relationship between self-efficacy and diabetes self-management in this sample. These findings suggest that nurses need to consider
implementing interventions to improve patients’ self-efficacy and potentially influence
diabetes self-management

The spectral transmission of ocular media suggests ultraviolet sensitivity is widespread among mammals
Although ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity is widespread among animals it is considered rare in mammals, being restricted to the few species that have a visual pigment maximally sensitive (λmax) below 400 nm. However, even animals without such a pigment will be UV-sensitive if they have ocular media that transmit these wavelengths, as all visual pigments absorb significant amounts of UV if the energy level is sufficient. Although it is known that lenses of diurnal sciurid rodents, tree shrews and primates prevent UV from reaching the retina, the degree of UV transmission by ocular media of most other mammals without a visual pigment with λmax in the UV is unknown. We examined lenses of 38 mammalian species from 25 families in nine orders and observed large diversity in the degree of short-wavelength transmission. All species whose lenses removed short wavelengths had retinae specialized for high spatial resolution and relatively high cone numbers, suggesting that UV removal is primarily linked to increased acuity. Other mammals, however, such as hedgehogs, dogs, cats, ferrets and okapis had lenses transmitting significant amounts of UVA (315–400 nm), suggesting that they will be UV-sensitive even without a specific UV visual pigment

The REgulate your SItting Time (RESIT) intervention for reducing sitting time in individuals with Type 2 diabetes: findings from a randomised-controlled feasibility trial

Reducing and breaking up sitting is recommended for optimal management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Yet, there is limited evidence of interventions targeting these outcomes in individuals with this condition. The primary aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering and evaluating a tailored online intervention to reduce and break up sitting in adults with T2DM.
Methods:
A mixed-methods two-arm randomised controlled feasibility trial was conducted in ambulatory adults with T2DM who were randomised 1:1 to the REgulate your SItting Time (RESIT) intervention or usual care control group. The intervention included online education, self-monitoring and prompt tools (wearable devices, smartphone apps, computer apps) and health coaching. Feasibility outcomes were recruitment, attrition, data completion rates and intervention acceptability. Measurements of device-assessed sitting (intended primary outcome for definitive trial), standing and stepping, and physical function, psychosocial health and wellbeing were taken at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted at six-months (post intervention) to explore acceptability, feasibility and experiences of the trial and intervention using the Framework Method.
Results:
Seventy participants aged 55 ± 11 years were recruited. Recruitment rate (proportion of eligible participants enrolled into the study) was 67% and participant retention rate at 6 months was 93% (n = 5 withdrawals). Data completion rates for daily sitting were 100% at baseline and ranged from 83 to 91% at 3 months and 6 months. Descriptive analysis demonstrated potential for the intervention to reduce device-measured sitting, which was 30.9 ± 87.2 and 22.2 ± 82.5 min/day lower in the intervention group at 3 and 6 months, respectively, compared with baseline. In the control group, sitting was 4.4 ± 99.5 and 23.7 ± 85.2 min/day lower at 3 and 6 months, respectively. Qualitative analysis identified three themes: reasons for participating in the trial, acceptability of study procedures, and the delivery and experience of taking part in the RESIT intervention. Overall, the measurement visits and intervention were acceptable to participants.
Conclusions:
This study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of the RESIT intervention and evaluation methods, supporting a future definitive trial. If RESIT is found to be clinically effective, this could lead to changes in diabetes healthcare with a focus on reducing sitting.Diabetes UK grant number [19/0005972]
Football fans in training: the development and optimization of an intervention delivered through professional sports clubs to help men lose weight, become more active and adopt healthier eating habits
<p>Background: The prevalence of obesity in men is rising, but they are less likely than women to engage in existing weight management programmes. The potential of professional sports club settings to engage men in health promotion activities is being increasingly recognised. This paper describes the development and optimization of the Football Fans in Training (FFIT) programme, which aims to help overweight men (many of them football supporters) lose weight through becoming more active and adopting healthier eating habits.</p>
<p>Methods: The MRC Framework for the design and evaluation of complex interventions was used to guide programme development in two phases. In Phase 1, a multidisciplinary working group developed the pilot programme (p-FFIT) and used a scoping review to summarize previous research and identify the target population. Phase 2 involved a process evaluation of p-FFIT in 11 Scottish Premier League (SPL) clubs. Participant and coach feedback, focus group discussions and interviews explored the utility/acceptability of programme components and suggestions for changes. Programme session observations identified examples of good practice and problems/issues with delivery. Together, these findings informed redevelopment of the optimized programme (FFIT), whose components were mapped onto specific behaviour change techniques using an evidence-based taxonomy.</p>
<p>Results: p-FFIT comprised 12, weekly, gender-sensitised, group-based weight management classroom and ‘pitch-side’ physical activity sessions. These in-stadia sessions were complemented by an incremental, pedometer-based walking programme. p-FFIT was targeted at men aged 35-65 years with body mass index ≥ 27 kg/m2. Phase 2 demonstrated that participants in p-FFIT were enthusiastic about both the classroom and physical activity components, and valued the camaraderie and peer-support offered by the programme. Coaches appreciated the simplicity of the key healthy eating and physical activity messages. Suggestions for improvements that were incorporated into the optimized FFIT programme included: more varied in-stadia physical activity with football-related components; post-programme weight management support (emails and a reunion session); and additional training for coaches in SMART goal setting and the pedometer-based walking programme.</p>
<p>Conclusions: The Football Fans in Training programme is highly acceptable to participants and SPL coaches, and is appropriate for evaluation in a randomised controlled trial.</p>
Synchronous bursts on scale-free neuronal networks with attractive and repulsive coupling
This paper investigates the dependence of synchronization transitions of
bursting oscillations on the information transmission delay over scale-free
neuronal networks with attractive and repulsive coupling. It is shown that for
both types of coupling, the delay always plays a subtle role in either
promoting or impairing synchronization. In particular, depending on the
inherent oscillation period of individual neurons, regions of irregular and
regular propagating excitatory fronts appear intermittently as the delay
increases. These delay-induced synchronization transitions are manifested as
well-expressed minima in the measure for spatiotemporal synchrony. For
attractive coupling, the minima appear at every integer multiple of the average
oscillation period, while for the repulsive coupling, they appear at every odd
multiple of the half of the average oscillation period. The obtained results
are robust to the variations of the dynamics of individual neurons, the system
size, and the neuronal firing type. Hence, they can be used to characterize

Neurology and neuropsychiatry of COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the early literature reveals frequent CNS manifestations and key emerging narratives
There is accumulating evidence of the neurological and neuropsychiatric features of infection with SARS-CoV-2. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to describe the characteristics of the early literature and estimate point prevalences for neurological and neuropsychiatric manifestations.We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL up to 18 July 2020 for randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies and case series. Studies reporting prevalences of neurological or neuropsychiatric symptoms were synthesised into meta-analyses to estimate pooled prevalence.13 292 records were screened by at least two authors to identify 215 included studies, of which there were 37 cohort studies, 15 case-control studies, 80 cross-sectional studies and 83 case series from 30 countries. 147 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The symptoms with the highest prevalence were anosmia (43.1% (95% CI 35.2% to 51.3%), n=15 975, 63 studies), weakness (40.0% (95% CI 27.9% to 53.5%), n=221, 3 studies), fatigue (37.8% (95% CI 31.6% to 44.4%), n=21 101, 67 studies), dysgeusia (37.2% (95% CI 29.8% to 45.3%), n=13 686, 52 studies), myalgia (25.1% (95% CI 19.8% to 31.3%), n=66 268, 76 studies), depression (23.0% (95% CI 11.8% to 40.2%), n=43 128, 10 studies), headache (20.7% (95% CI 16.1% to 26.1%), n=64 613, 84 studies), anxiety (15.9% (5.6% to 37.7%), n=42 566, 9 studies) and altered mental status (8.2% (95% CI 4.4% to 14.8%), n=49 326, 19 studies). Heterogeneity for most clinical manifestations was high.Neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms of COVID-19 in the pandemic's early phase are varied and common. The neurological and psychiatric academic communities should develop systems to facilitate high-quality methodologies, including more rapid examination of the longitudinal course of neuropsychiatric complications of newly emerging diseases and their relationship to neuroimaging and inflammatory biomarkers
