    Get PDF

    Get PDF

De gustibus est disputandum: An empirical investigation of the folk concept of aesthetic taste

    Get PDF
Past research on folk aesthetics has suggested that most people are subjectivists when it comes to aesthetic judgment. However, most people also make a distinction between good and bad aesthetic taste. To understand the extent to which these two observations conflict with one another, we need a better understanding of people's everyday concept of aesthetic taste. In this paper, we present the results of a study in which participants drawn from a representative sample of the US population were asked whether they usually distinguish between good and bad taste, how they define them, and whether aesthetic taste can be improved. Those who answered positively to the first question were asked to provide their definition of good and bad taste, while those who answered positively to the third question were asked to detail by what means taste can be improved. Our results suggest that most people distinguish between good and bad taste, and think taste can be improved. People's definitions of good and bad taste were varied, and were torn between very subjectivist conceptions of taste and others that lent themselves to a more objectivist interpretation. Overall, our results suggest that the tension Hume observed in conceptions of aesthetic taste is still present today

Contrary to the emotions we feel in everyday contexts, the emotions we feel for fictional characters do not seem to require a belief in the existence of their object. This observation has given birth to a famous philosophical paradox (the ‘paradox of fiction’), and has led some philosophers to claim that the emotions we feel for fictional characters are not genuine emotions but rather “quasi-emotions”. Since then, the existence of quasi-emotions has been a hotly debated issue. Recently, philosophers and psychologists have proposed to solve this debate by using empirical methods and experimentally studying differences between ‘real’ and ‘fictional’ emotions. In this paper, our goal is to assess the success of these attempts. We begin by surveying the existing empirical literature and stressing the methodological problems that plague most studies that might seem relevant to the debate, before focusing on recent studies that avoid this pitfall. We then argue that, due to conceptual problems, these studies fail to be relevant to the philosophical debate and emphasise new directions for future empirical research on the topic

How to choose the frozen density in Frozen-Density Embedding Theory-based numerical simulations of local excitations?

    Get PDF
According to Frozen-Density Embedding Theory, any observable evaluated for the embedded species is a functional of the frozen density (ρ B —the density associated with the environment). The environment-induced shifts in the energies of local excitations in organic chromophores embedded in hydrogen-bonded environments are analyzed. The excitation energies obtained for ρ B , which is derived from ground-state calculations for the whole environment applying medium quality basis sets (STO-DZP) or larger, vary in a narrow range (about 0.02eV which is at least one order of magnitude less than the magnitude of the shift). At the same time, the ground-state dipole moment of the environment varies significantly. The lack of correlation between the calculated shift and the dipole moment of the environment reflects the fact that, in Frozen-Density Embedding Theory, the partitioning of the total density is not unique. As a consequence, such concepts as "environment polarization” are not well defined within Frozen-Density Embedding Theory. Other strategies to generate ρ B (superposition of densities of atoms/molecules in the environment) are shown to be less robust for simulating excitation energy shifts for chromophores in environments comprising hydrogen-bonded molecules

Parking is one of the important elements of urban transportation, such, it has various long and short-term impacts on individuals, societies, and transportation systems. It affects to the transportation mode selection. People tend to drive private car when the representative parking area is available. This research is focused at the determination of the parameters that affect the use of parking area. The parameters are expected to be useful in estimating the parking area demand of the hospital class B in Semarang. There are six major parameters describing the parking slot, i.e.: accumulation, parking volume, total spaces available (capacity), parking turnover, peak time, duration of occupancy and occupancy. Three hospitals are selected as object of the study; there are RS Telogorejo, RS Elisabeth and RS dr Kariadi. The survey is carried out by direct investigation and questionnaire. Statistical analysis by using linear regression, logarithmic, quadratic, and exponential, indicated that the amount of bed used has a very high correlation with the parking demand. The next highest correlation is observed between medical specialist and parking demand. The average duration in RS Telogorejo is 15 – 30 minutes, RS Elisabeth is 30 minutes – 2 hours, and RS dr Kariadi is 15 – 30 minutes for car. For motorcycle, the average duration in RS Telogorejo is 30 minutes – 1 hour, RS Elisabeth is 30 minutes – 2 hours, and RS dr Kariadi is above 4 hours. From the study, it was found that the ratio between parking demand for vehicle and the number of bed being used is 0.89, meanwhile the ratio between parking demand for motorcycle and the number of bed being used is 1.29. Other alternative of parking facility like special parking building area is recommended to be considered for the hospital with limited area

Calculation of Raman optical activity spectra for vibrational analysis

    Get PDF
By looking back on the history of Raman Optical Activity (ROA), the present article shows that the success of this analytical technique was for a long time hindered, paradoxically, by the deep level of detail and wealth of structural information it can provide. Basic principles of the underlying theory are discussed, to illustrate the technique's sensitivity due to its physical origins in the delicate response of molecular vibrations to electromagnetic properties. Following a short review of significant advances in the application of ROA by UK researchers, we dedicate two extensive sections to the technical and theoretical difficulties that were overcome to eventually provide predictive power to computational simulations in terms of ROA spectral calculation. In the last sections, we focus on a new modelling strategy that has been successful in coping with the dramatic impact of solvent effects on ROA analyses. This work emphasises the role of complementarity between experiment and theory for analysing the conformations and dynamics of biomolecules, so providing new perspectives for methodological improvements and molecular modelling development. For the latter, an example of a next-generation force-field for more accurate simulations and analysis of molecular behaviour is presented. By improving the accuracy of computational modelling, the analytical capabilities of ROA spectroscopy will be further developed so generating new insights into the complex behaviour of molecules
