    Apollo Saturn 511 effluent measurements from the Apollo 16 launch operations: An experiment

    An experiment was performed in conjunction with the Apollo 16 launch to define operational and instrumentational problems associated with launch-vehicle exhaust effluent monitoring. Ground and airborne sampling were performed for CO, CO2, hydrocarbons, and particulates. Sampling systems included filter pads and photometers for particulates and whole-air grab samples for gases. Launch debris was identified in the particulate samples at ground level(taken immediately after launch) and in the airborne measurements (taken 40 to 50 minutes after launch approximately 40 km downwind of the pad). Operational problems were identified and included the need for higher instrumentation mobility and the need for real-time sampling instrumentation as opposed to collection-type samples such as the whole-air grab sample

    1.   Rapid movements in fungi and plants have evolved in different species to facilitate the dispersal of spores and seeds. The mechanisms of action can differ among species, but the effectiveness of these movements has rarely, if ever, been tested. Here we show through a quantitative biomechanical analysis that the stamens of Cornus canadensis L. (bunchberry) are ideal for catapulting pollen vertically at high speeds. 2.   We develop a biomechanical model to describe the explosive launch of pollen from the flowers of bunchberry. The model determines the equation of motion for the stamens based only on the morphology and measurements of the parts of the stamens. To measure the motion of the stamens to compare with our model, we analysed individual frames of a video taken at 10 000 fps. 3.   The thecae of adjacent stamens dehisce in bud so that the stomia face each other, retaining pollen between neighbouring anthers. As the flowers open, pollen is accelerated vertically as long as the thecae remain in contact. Pollen is released only when the anthers move horizontally and separate. 4.   The observed motion of the stamens matches the results from our model through release of the pollen. The model reveals that pollen release (horizontal movement of the anthers) occurs only after the vertical speed is at its maximum. Thus, for this particular catapult mechanism, the morphology of the stamens is optimal for launching light, dry pollen straight upwards at high speed. Pollen launched vertically at high speed both enhances insect pollination by helping to making pollen stick on visiting insects, and also allows for successful wind pollination by propelling pollen into the air column. Seed set by inflorescences in pollinator-exclosure cages further supports the ability of this flower to use wind as a pollination mechanism.     Modeling Spanish anxiolytic consumption: Economic, demographic and behavioral influences

    Anxiolytics (AX) are the psychotropic drugs prescribed for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia for 2–4 weeks, for longer periods of consumption (>1 month) may lead to the development of tolerance or addiction. In fact, its prescription was 16% of the total pharmaceutical expenditure in Spain in 2007. This paper deals with the development of a mathematical model describing the dynamic of the addiction to AX for the case study of the Spanish region of Castellón. The reasons believed to cause the development of addicts to AX are the economic situation, the marriage termination and the social contact. The simulations performed to forecast the addicts rate for the period 2010–2014 showed an increase from 6% in 2010 to 14% in 2014 with a fluctuation of about 2% between the possible economic scenarios.     Geological factors controlling Early Carboniferous carbonate platform development in the Netherlands

    A deep pre-Silesian carbonate play has recently come into focus in the Netherlands and poses some real opportunities and challenges to the explorationist. Underneath the very thick cover of Westphalian and Namurian clastic sediments, which cover almost the entire Netherlands, a yet undiscovered petroleum system may be present in Dinantian carbonates. However, lack of well control and the significant depth involved has caused pre-Silesian formations to be under-explored. Furthermore, seismic definition below the widespread Permian Zechstein evaporites is often very poor. Nevertheless, recent discoveries in the Caspian Sea area have shown that during the Lower Carboniferous very thick carbonate bioherms can develop. These giant reservoirs related to large build-ups can provide the required size for deep pre-Silesian prospects in the southern North Sea area and Dutch onshore. From the sparse well control and extrapolation of limited geological data in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany, it is suggested that thick Dinantian platform carbonates may be present at the northern fringe of the London-Brabant Massif. For realistic reservoir models of these platforms, areas outside the Netherlands have to be studied, for example the UK Midlands, and south of the London-Brabant Massif, in eastern and southern Belgium. Although, the latter area has been affected by the Variscan Orogeny, the Dinantian-aged rocks at outcrop provide a good model for the understanding of the frequency of the major depositional cycles, solution collapse, erosion and dolomitization processes. Dolomitization may be one of the most important processes that can provide good reservoir quality, and primary porosity related to reef growth, the second important process. Reservoir studies show, that significant reef growth, with associated grainstone facies on the windward side, is an important factor, to understand Dinantian-aged reservoirs in the Caspian Sea area. Similarly, a dominant east to west wind direction may explain, the development of build-ups and grainstone facies as an eastern fringe to the Dutch Dinantian platforms, but not on the leeward-side of the London-Brabant Massif in southern Belgium

    Use of Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography to guide management of patients with coronary disease

    Background In a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial, 4,146 patients were randomized to receive standard care or standard care plus coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore the consequences of CCTA-assisted diagnosis on invasive coronary angiography, preventive treatments, and clinical outcomes. Methods In post hoc analyses, we assessed changes in invasive coronary angiography, preventive treatments, and clinical outcomes using national electronic health records. Results Despite similar overall rates (409 vs. 401; p = 0.451), invasive angiography was less likely to demonstrate normal coronary arteries (20 vs. 56; hazard ratios [HRs]: 0.39 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.23 to 0.68]; p < 0.001) but more likely to show obstructive coronary artery disease (283 vs. 230; HR: 1.29 [95% CI: 1.08 to 1.55]; p = 0.005) in those allocated to CCTA. More preventive therapies (283 vs. 74; HR: 4.03 [95% CI: 3.12 to 5.20]; p < 0.001) were initiated after CCTA, with each drug commencing at a median of 48 to 52 days after clinic attendance. From the median time for preventive therapy initiation (50 days), fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction was halved in patients allocated to CCTA compared with those assigned to standard care (17 vs. 34; HR: 0.50 [95% CI: 0.28 to 0.88]; p = 0.020). Cumulative 6-month costs were slightly higher with CCTA: difference 462(95462 (95% CI: 303 to $621). Conclusions In patients with suspected angina due to coronary heart disease, CCTA leads to more appropriate use of invasive angiography and alterations in preventive therapies that were associated with a halving of fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction.     Invasive community-onset gram-positive infections from July 2018 through December 2022 at 2 children\u27s hospitals

    BACKGROUND: Invasive infections caused by METHODS: Cases of iGAS, IPD, and I-CO-SA infections were identified prospectively and retrospectively at 2 large US children\u27s hospitals by positive cultures from July 2018 through December 2022. Admission data were used to estimate frequency. For comparison, rates of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 were estimated by the number of positive viral test results at each institution. RESULTS: I-CO-SA infections showed little variation in the study period. Rates of iGAS infection and IPD decreased by 46% and 44%, respectively, from 2019 to 2020, coinciding with a substantial decrease in RSV and influenza. In 2022, RSV and influenza infection rates increased to prepandemic winter season rates, coinciding with a return to prepandemic rates of IPD (225% increase from 2021 to 2022) and a surge above prepandemic rates of iGAS infections (543% increase from 2021 to 2022). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic had an unexpected influence on IPD and iGAS infections that was temporally related to changes in rates of viral infections

    Infection by a foliar endophyte elicits novel arabidopside-based plant defence reactions in its host, Cirsium arvense

    Endophytic fungi live asymptomatically within plants. They are usually regarded as non-pathogenic or even mutualistic, but whether plants respond antagonistically to their presence remains unclear, particularly in the little-studied associations between endophytes and nong-raminoid herbaceous plants. We investigated the effects of the endophyte Chaetomium cochlioides on leaf chemistry in Cirsium arvense. Plants were sprayed with spores; leaf material from both subsequent new growth and the sprayed leaves was analysed 2 wk later. Infection frequency was 91% and63% for sprayed and new growth, respectively, indicating that C. cochlioides rapidly infects new foliage. Metabolomic analyses revealed marked changes in leaf chemistry with infection, especially in new growth. Changes in several novel oxylipin metabolites were detected, including arabi-dopsides reported here for the first time in a plant species other than Arabidopsis thaliana,and a jasmonate-containing galactolipid. The production of these metabolites in response to endophyte presence, particularly in newly infected foliage, suggests that endophytes elicit similar chemical responses in plants to those usually produced following wounding, herbivory and pathogen invasion. Whether en-dophytes benefit their hosts may depend on a complex series of chemically mediated interactions between the plant, the endophyte, other microbial colonists and natural enemies

    Yield of Downstream Tests After Exercise Treadmill Testing A Prospective Cohort Study

    ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency and results of downstream testing after exercise treadmill tests (ETTs).BackgroundThe utility of additional diagnostic testing after ETT is not well characterized.MethodsWe followed consecutive individuals without known coronary artery disease referred for clinical ETT at a large medical center. We measured the frequency and results of downstream imaging tests and invasive angiography within 6 months of ETT and the combined endpoint of survival free from cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and coronary revascularization.ResultsAmong 3,656 consecutive subjects who were followed for a mean of 2.5 ± 1.1 years, 332 (9.0%) underwent noninvasive imaging and 84 (2.3%) were referred directly to invasive angiography after ETT. The combined endpoint occurred in 76 (2.2%) patients. The annual incidence of the combined endpoint after negative, inconclusive, and positive ETT was 0.2%, 1.3%, and 12.4%, respectively (p < 0.001). Rapid recovery of electrocardiography (ECG) changes during ETT was associated with negative downstream test results and excellent prognosis, whereas typical angina despite negative ECG was associated with positive downstream tests and adverse prognosis (p < 0.001). Younger age, female sex, higher metabolic equivalents of task achieved, and rapid recovery of ECG changes were predictors of negative downstream tests.ConclusionsAmong patients referred for additional testing after ETT, the lowest yield was observed among individuals with rapid recovery of ECG changes or negative ETT, whereas the highest yield was observed among those with typical angina despite negative ECG or a positive ETT. These findings may be used to identify patients who are most and least likely to benefit from additional testing
