Using seam to better understand born globals. A spanish case

    Get PDF
This work presents a systematic overview of the opportunities and challenges for international ventures. Moreover, it seeks to reflect on success-factors of launching a venture in international context and how Socio-Economic Approach to Management (SEAM) can help. Using a practical case study, we discuss the limitations of the “state of art” in BGs and reflect on what SEAM can provide in understanding the main managerial complexities faced by BGs and in leading BGs change in order that they develop the dynamic capabilities to succeed in International markets.Universidad de Málaga. Modelling the discrete and infrequent official interest rate change in the UK

    Get PDF
This paper is an empirical analysis of the manner in which official interest rates are determined by the Bank of England. We use a nonlinear framework that allow for the separate study of factors affecting the magnitude of positive and negative interest rate changes as well as their probabilities. Using this approach, new kinds of monetary shocks are defined and used to evaluate their impact on the UK economy. Among them, unanticipated negative interest rate changes are especially important. The model generalizes previous approaches in the literature and provides a rich methodology to understand central banks' decisions and their consequences

Internal orientation in the growth of Born-Globals. Learning from inside

Thomson South-Western Award OUTSTANDING RESEARCH-BASED PAPER ON MANAGEMENT CONSULTING 2. FINALIST CAROLYN DEXTER AWARD FOR BEST INTERNATIONAL PAPERBased on a longitudinal case study in a young BG by means of action-research, that allows the participation of all employees in the co-creation of internal knowledge, we identify organisational dysfunctions during the early phase that affect the development of entrepreneurial and market orientation. Using the Socio-Economic Approach to Management (Savall, 1974), we propose that the entrepreneurs need to adopt an Internal Orientation (aiming at developing a cohesive organisation), and that the ‘right time’ for doing so is not after a few years, as the literature suggests, but much earlier.Universidad de Málaga. Modelling monetary transmission in UK manufacturing industry

    Get PDF
This paper studies the transmission of monetary policy to industrial output in the UK. In order to capture asymmetries, a system of threshold equations is considered. However, unlike previous research, endogenous threshold parameters are allowed to be different for each equation. This approach is consistent with economic intuition and is shown to be of tangible importance after suitable econometric evaluation. Results show evidence of cross-sectional differences across industries and asymmetries in some sectors. These findings contribute to the debate about the importance of alternative economic theories to explain these asymmetries and support the use of a sectorally disaggregated approach to the analysis of monetary transmission

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The result lea us to conclude that the effects of rent and population are drivers of the final energy consumption changes, instead of the effect of intensity that works as inhibitor of energy consumption. Chain-linked LMDI decomposition shows the existence of three sub-periods. The first period (1995-2005) coinciding to a great economy context, showed an increase in the final energy consumption, mostly due to the rent effect. The second period (2005-2012) shows a reduction in the population, rent and intensity effect. Finally the third period (2012-2015) there is an increase of the consumption of energy in the sector of transport due to the rent effect. The result allow us to conclude that some of the efficiency measures of the National Plan increase the intensity effect as an inhibitor of the energy consumption. Finally, there should be more policy attention on the news transport technology focused on the reduction of energy consumptionUniversidad de Sevilla. Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresa

Numerical Method For Tsunami Calculation Using Full Navier -Stokes Equations And The Volume Of Fluid Method

    Get PDF
Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2006A two-dimensional numerical model was developed to study tsunami wave generation, propagation and runup. The model is based on solving the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations. The free-surface motion is tracked using the Volume of Fluid technique. The finite difference two-step projection method is used to solve NS equations and the forward time difference method to discretize the time derivative. A structured mesh is used to discretize the spatial domain. The model has been conceived as a versatile, efficient and practical numerical tool for tsunami computation, which could address a comprehensive understanding of tsunami physics with the ultimate aim of mitigating tsunami hazards. The prediction capability of tsunami generation, propagation and runup is improved by including more accurately the effects of vertical velocity/acceleration, dispersion and wave breaking. The model has the capability to represent complex curved boundaries within a Cartesian grid system and to deal with arbitrary transient-deformed moving boundaries. The numerical model was validated using laboratory experiments and analytical solutions. The model was used as a tool to determine the adequacy of the shallow water (SW) approximation in the application of tsunami simulations. Numerical results were compared with experimental data, analytical solutions and SW results in terms of the time-history free surface elevations and velocity. Reasonable agreements were observed based on the spatial and temporal distributions of the free surface and velocity

A case study of cross-curricular dialogue as a part of teacher education in the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach

    Get PDF
This study is part of a large project on teacher education in the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach to teaching in Spanish secondary-education schools. The study departs from the assumptions that the professionals working on interdisciplinary environments such as CLIL education require an informed appreciation of the perspective of a complementary discipline - either a linguistic or content one (Newell in Chettiparamb 2007: 45) and that cross-curricular dialogue is a tool for obtaining information about what makes it difficult for professionals from different teaching praxes and epistemological traditions to reach agreements about what language and what content to teach and how to integrate these when planning CLIL activities (Escobar Urmeneta 2008). The study explores the professional perspective an expert in the Pedagogy of History offered to an expert in the Pedagogy of English as a Foreign Language. The main results of the analysis are the reconstruction of the former's model for teaching History and his conception of the role of discourse in the Pedagogy of History. These are the basis for identifying potential points for discussion between an expert in the Pedagogy of History and an expert in the Pedagogy of Foreign Languages who have to engage in a process of cross-curricular collaboration to develop CLIL teaching sequence
