High intensity luminescence from pulsed laser annealed europium implanted sapphire

    Get PDF
Sapphire samples (Al2O3) were implanted with 400-keV ions at a dose of 1×1016 ions cm-2. A comparison was made between furnace annealing and pulsed laser annealing of the implanted samples. Furnace annealing to 1200°C, followed by excimer laser anneals, resulted in an increase of the cathodoluminescence emission intensity of the implanted europium by a factor of ∼20. This enhanced intensity is ∼50 times that of the signal prior to any form annealing treatment. It is proposed that the laser anneals dissociate Eu related clusters. The Eu 622-nm lifetime reached 1.53 ms compared with an original postimplant value of 0.14 ms. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.Peer Reviewe

Does deprivation affect breast cancer management?

    Get PDF
We evaluated whether social deprivation affected decision-making for breast cancer surgery. Of 3419 patients, 53.6% had mastectomy and this was predicted by deprivation, age, tumour size and hospital, all of which retained significance on multivariate analysis, except deprivation. Pathological characteristics and surgical decision-making determined choice of operation not deprivation

Consideration Sets and Their Role in Modelling Doctor Recommendations About Contraceptives

In order to better understand contraceptive choice within this environment, stated preference methods are utilized to ask doctors about what contraceptive options they would discuss with different types of women. The role of doctors is to confine their discussion to a subset of products that best match their patient. This subset of options forms the consideration set from which the ultimate recommendation is made. Given the existence of consideration sets we address the issue of how to model appropriately the ultimate recommendations. The estimated models enable us to characterize doctor recommendations and how they vary with patient attributes and to highlight where recommendations are clear and when they are uncertain. The results also indicate systematic variation in recommendations across different types of doctors, and in particular we observe that some doctors are reluctant to embrace new products and instead recommend those that are more familiar. Such effects are one possible explanation for the relatively low uptake of more cost effective longer acting reversible contraceptives and indicate that further education and training of doctors may be warranted. Black Holes, Mergers, and the Entropy Budget of the Universe

Vast amounts of entropy are produced in black hole formation, and the amount of entropy stored in supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies is now much greater than the entropy free in the rest of the universe. Either mergers involved in forming supermassive black holes are rare,or the holes must be very efficient at capturing nearly all the entropy generated in the process. We argue that this information can be used to constrain supermassive black hole production, and may eventually provide a check on numerical results for mergers involving black holes
