Methods for multiloop calculations and Higgs boson production at the LHC

    Get PDF
The main topics of this thesis are Higgs boson production and the program package TopoID. We calculated results for all collinear counterterms up to N3LO. For a particular class of triple-real integrals we obtained results with full dependence on x. TopoID is designed to be a process independent tool for topology identification, FORM code generation and finding non-trivial relations among integrals that remain after applying a reduction algorithm

Collective action problems:Disentangling possible feedback loops between government policies and the public’s value-change

Solving collective action problems, such as poverty reduction or climate change, depends on interactions between governments' and voters' preferences regarding pro-social actions. This paper examines whether the overall direction of change in pro-social public policy precedes public value-change, rather than the other way around. We examine change in the public’s pro-social values in six European countries, as measured by the European Social Survey (ESS) during 2002-2012. In these countries, we conducted an expert survey to rate governmental policy that expresses these values over the same period, thereby examining value-change in governmental policy. The chronological comparison of value-change of the public with that of respective governments suggests that changes in pro-social government policies may drive public value-change rather than vice versa. This complements previous studies focused on the opinion-policy connection. Possible political implications are discussed. The promising findings of this initial study point to the importance of conducting larger-scale future studies

Wake-Tailplane Interaction of a Slingsby Firefly Aircraft

This paper presents in-flight measurements of the interaction of the wing wake of a stalled Slingsby T67 Firefly light aircraft with the aircraft tailplane. Tailplane data was recorded by a GoPro360 camera and analyzed using spatial correlation methods. The tailplane movement and corresponding spectra indicate that the aerodynamic wake shedding frequency closely matches the resonant frequency of the tailplane, resulting in a significant excitation of the structure during heavy stall. Large magnitude, lower frequency tailplane movement was also identified by analysis of the pitch attitude from the image data, with results consistent in post-stall behavior reported by previous modelling and measurements

    Cross-Coupling Reactions of Monosubstituted Tetrazines

A Ag-mediated Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling method for 3-bromo-1,2,4,5-tetrazine with boronic acids is presented. Electronic modification of the 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (dppf) ligand was found to be crucial for good turnover. Using this fast method, a variety of alkyl-, heteroatom-, and halide-substituted aryl- and heteroaryl-tetrazines were prepared (29 examples, up to 87% yield)

Glutathione depletion and increased apoptosis rate in human cystinotic proximal tubular cells

We have determined levels of glutathione (GSH), ATP, mitochondrial complex activity and apoptosis rate in proximal tubular cells (PTCs) exfoliated from urine in cystinotic (n=9) and control (n=9) children. Intracellular GSH was significantly depleted in cystinotic PTCs compared with controls (6.8nmol GSH/mg protein vs 11.8nmol GSH/mg protein; P<0.001), but there were no significant differences in mitochondrial complex activities or ATP levels under basal conditions. Cystinotic PTCs showed significantly increased apoptosis rate. After PTCs had been stressed by hypoxia, there was further depletion of GSH in cystinotic and control PTCs (2.4nmol GSH/mg protein vs 7.2nmol GSH/mg protein; P<0.001). Hypoxic stress led to increased complexI and complexIV activities in control but not in cystinotic PTCs. ATP levels were significantly reduced in cystinotic PTCs after hypoxic stress (12.2nmol/mg protein vs 26.9nmol/mg protein; P<0.001). GSH depletion occurs in this in vitro model of cystinotic PTCs, is exaggerated by hypoxic stress and may contribute to reduced ATP and failure to increase complexI/IV activities. Apoptotic rate is also increased, and these mechanisms may contribute to cellular dysfunction in cultured, human cystinotic PTC
