Human Factors in the Ground-Support of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems
A growing body of research has been directed at the human factors of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) flight operations, yet up to now, virtually no attention has been given to the human factors of UAS maintenance. The aim of the current research program was to identify the challenges facing the maintainers of small unmanned aircraft systems. Unlike their counterparts in conventional aviation, UAS maintenance technicians are responsible for the functioning of an entire system, comprising airborne and ground-based components. Challenges include absent or poor maintenance documentation, the need to make frequent decisions about salvaging components, difficulties in troubleshooting software problems, the maintenance of radio control model aircraft components, and the potential unfamiliarity of UAS maintenance personnel with the culture and practices of the aviation industry. A âdirty dozenâ list of UAS human factors is proposed
Cylindrical, periodic surface lattice â theory, dispersion analysis, and experiment
A two-dimensional surface lattice of cylindrical topology obtained via perturbing the inner surface of a cylinder is considered. Periodic perturbations of the surface lead to observation of high-impedance, dielectric-like media and resonant coupling of surface and non-propagating volume fields. This allows synthesis of tailored-for-purpose "coating" material with dispersion suitable, for instance, to mediate a Cherenkov type interaction. An analytical model of the lattice is discussed and coupled-wave equations are derived. Variations of the lattice dispersive properties with variation of parameters are shown, illustrating the tailoring of the structure's electromagnetic properties. Experimental results are presented showing agreement with the theoretical model
Radiative Decay of a Long-Lived Particle and Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis
The effects of radiatively decaying, long-lived particles on big-bang
nucleosynthesis (BBN) are discussed. If high-energy photons are emitted after
BBN, they may change the abundances of the light elements through
photodissociation processes, which may result in a significant discrepancy
between the BBN theory and observation. We calculate the abundances of the
light elements, including the effects of photodissociation induced by a
radiatively decaying particle, but neglecting the hadronic branching ratio.
Using these calculated abundances, we derive a constraint on such particles by
comparing our theoretical results with observations. Taking into account the
recent controversies regarding the observations of the light-element
abundances, we derive constraints for various combinations of the measurements.
We also discuss several models which predict such radiatively decaying
particles, and we derive constraints on such models.Comment: Published version in Phys. Rev. D. Typos in figure captions correcte
Gentamicin Susceptibility in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Treatment Outcomes for Urogenital Gonorrhea After 25 Years of Sustained Gentamicin Use in Malawi
Background Gentamicin has been used for the treatment of gonorrhea in Malawi since 1993. However, declining clinical cure rates have been suspected. We evaluated current Neisseria gonorrhoeae susceptibility to gentamicin in vitro and clinically. Methods Men with acute urethritis were recruited at the Bwaila District Hospital STI Clinic in Lilongwe, Malawi, between January 2017 and August 2019. All men provided urethral swabs for etiological testing at enrollment and test of cure (TOC), 1 week later, using Gram-stained microscopy and culture. We used Etest to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of gentamicin, azithromycin, cefixime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and spectinomycin; disc diffusion for tetracycline susceptibility; and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to verify/refute treatment failure. Results Among 183 N. gonorrhoeae culture-positive men enrolled, 151 (82.5%) had a swab taken for TOC. Of these 151 men, 16 (10.6%) had a positive culture at TOC. One hundred forty-one baseline isolates were tested for gentamicin susceptibility using Etest: 2 (1.4%), MIC = 2 ÎŒg/mL; 111 (78.7%), MIC = 4 ÎŒg/mL; and 28 (19.9%), MIC = 8 ÎŒg/mL. All isolates were susceptible to azithromycin, cefixime, ceftriaxone, and spectinomycin, whereas 63.1% had intermediate susceptibility or resistance to ciprofloxacin. Almost all (96.1%) isolates were resistant to tetracycline. All examined isolates cultured at TOC (n = 13) had gentamicin MICs â€8 ÎŒg/mL. Ten men had pretreatment and posttreatment isolates examined by whole-genome sequencing; 2 (20%) were verified new infections (4119 and 1272 single-nucleotide polymorphisms), whereas 8 (80%) were confirmed treatment failures (0-1 single-nucleotide polymorphism). Conclusions Gentamicin MICs poorly predict gonorrhea treatment outcome with gentamicin, and treatment failures are verified with gonococcal strains with in vitro susceptibility to gentamicin. The first-line treatment of gonorrhea in Malawi should be reassessed

Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge
boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states
and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic
final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated
luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96
TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two
different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters
Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2
TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154,
-0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization,
and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings
parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson
magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Inhibition of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 by Vildagliptin During Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Infusion Increases Liver Glucose Uptake in the Conscious Dog
OBJECTIVEâThis study investigated the acute effects of treatment with vildagliptin on dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) activity, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) concentration, pancreatic hormone levels, and glucose metabolism. The primary aims were to determine the effects of DPP-4 inhibition on GLP-1 clearance and on hepatic glucose uptake
Measurement of Z/gamma*+jet+X angular distributions in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross
sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and
|y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an
excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross
section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are
crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event
generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these
measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the
experimental sensitivity to rare signals.Comment: Published in Physics Letters B 682 (2010), pp. 370-380. 15 pages, 6

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in tau final states
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson using hadronically
decaying tau leptons, in 1 inverse femtobarn of data collected with the D0
detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. We select two final states:
tau plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau+ tau- plus jets. These
final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs
boson, vector boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The
observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at
the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of
115 GeV.Comment: publication versio
