    Comparing Agriculture‐Related Characteristics of Flash and Normal Drought Reveals Heterogeneous Crop Response

    Despite rapid progress in the burgeoning field of flash drought research, few studies directly compare the differences in characteristics between flash drought (commonly understood as quick, rapid-onset drought) and drought traditionally defined as slow-moving (henceforth normal drought), particularly over agricultural regions where drought effects may be economically the most disastrous. In this study, flash and normal drought events are identified using reanalysis of soil moisture in the data-rich agricultural region of the California Central Valley for investigation of characteristics related to agriculture. In particular, we investigate the relative duration of pixels in drought events, the correlation of drought intensity with vegetation condition, the impact of aridity on vegetation response and drought, and the differences in the different characteristics between rainfed and irrigated agriculture. Overall, we found considerable differences between flash and normal drought, particularly in their spatial distributions and behavior in relation to aridity. Flash droughts even indicate a counterintuitive improvement in vegetation condition in the northern, more humid regions, likely due to the release of growth limiting factors (e.g., below-optimum temperature and radiation) associated with drought. Results also indicate improvements in vegetation conditions during normal drought for irrigated land over rainfed, highlighting the importance of irrigation as a drought protection strategy in agriculture

    Going Concern Audit Opinions: Good News for Corporate Insiders?

    We report that corporate insiders are able to profit from conservative first time going concern audit opinions (GCOs). GCOs comprise a high percentage of Type I error that transforms into a going concern opinion withdrawal (GCOW) within one year. We conjecture and affirm that the anticipatory trading of corporate insiders, who have access to firm based private information, drives positive abnormal returns before a GCOW and this increased trading volume is associated with firms that have audit determined financial issues. The degree of economic significance is highlighted by constructing arbitrage hedge portfolios that follow the trading of all corporate insiders in GCOW firms, by returning abnormal profits of 25.36% over 60 days

    Nativity Status and Workplace Discrimination in Registered Nurses : Testing the Mediating Role of Psychosocial Work Characteristics

    Abstract Aim To examine: 1) whether nativity status was associated with workplace discrimination, 2) whether this association was mediated through psychosocial work characteristics (job strain, job demands and job control) among registered female nurses. Design Cross-sectional survey with a self-report questionnaire was conducted. Methods A random sample of 610 native Registered Nurses and a total sample of 188 foreign-born Registered Nurses working in Finland were used. Data were collected between September - November of 2017 and analyzed using a counterfactual approach in the causal mediation framework. Results After adjusting for several potential confounders, foreign-born nurses scored higher on workplace discrimination than native nurses. Approximately 20% of the association between nativity status and workplace discrimination was mediated through job control. Job demands and job strain were unlikely to mediate this association. Conclusion The study provides further evidence that migrant status is associated with a higher risk of workplace discrimination among nurses. Lower levels of control over one's own job may partly contribute to the higher risk of workplace discrimination in foreign-born women nurses. Impact Our study addresses the relationship between nativity status and workplace discrimination among female nurses and its mediating factors. The findings suggest that health care organization leaders need to be aware of the increased risk of workplace discrimination among migrant nurses. Moreover, health care organizations need to consider psychosocial work characteristics, including job control, in the efforts aimed to prevent and reduce discrimination against their foreign-born employees.Peer reviewe

    Cumulative mutagenesis of the basic residues in the 201-218 region of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding protein-5 results in progressive loss of both IGF-I binding and inhibition of IGF-I biological action

    We have reported previously that mutation of two conserved nonbasic amino acids (G203 and Q209) within the highly basic 201–218 region in the C-terminal domain of IGF-binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5) decreases binding to IGFs. This study reveals that cumulative mutagenesis of the 10 basic residues in this region, to create the C-Term series of mutants, ultimately results in a 15-fold decrease in the affinity for IGF-I and a major loss in heparin binding. We examined the ability of mutants to inhibit IGF-mediated survival of MCF-7 cells and were able to demonstrate that this depended not only upon the affinity for IGF-I, but also the kinetics of this interaction, because IGFBP-5 mutants with similar affinity constants (KD) values, but with different association (Ka) and dissociation (Kd) rate values, had markedly different inhibitory properties. In contrast, the affinity for IGF-I provided no predictive value in terms of the ability of these mutants to enhance IGF action when bound to the substratum. Instead, these C-Term mutants appeared to enhance the actions of IGF-I by a combination of increased dissociation of IGF-IGFBP complexes from the substratum, together with dissociation of IGF-I from IGFBP-5 bound to the substratum. These effects of the IGFBPs were dependent upon binding to IGF-I, because a non-IGF binding mutant (N-Term) was unable to inhibit or enhance the actions of IGF-I. These results emphasize the importance of the kinetics of association/dissociation in determining the enhancing or inhibiting effects of IGFBP-5 and demonstrate the ability to generate an IGFBP-5 mutant with exclusively IGF-enhancing activity

    Cognitive profile and determinants of poor cognition in people without dementia in Parkinson's disease

    Background : The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) has been recommended as a cognitive screening tool for clinical practice and research in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet no normative data have been published for MoCA in PD without dementia. Methods : We undertook a pooled secondary analysis of data from two studies (one cross-sectional design and one clinical trial) conducted in the East of England region. All participants were aged 18 years or over, met UK Brain Bank criteria for PD and did not have clinical dementia. Cognitive status was assessed using MoCA at baseline in both studies. The influences of age, gender, disease duration, medication load (LEDD) and mood (HADS) on cognition were examined using regression analysis. Results : Data from 101 people with PD without dementia were available (mean age 71 years, 66% men). Median (IQR) MoCA was 25(22, 27). Age was found as the only predictor of MoCA in this sample. People aged over 71 had poorer MoCA (Beta=0.6 (95%CI 0.44, 0.82)) and an increased odds of MoCA <26 (Beta=0.29 (95%CI 0.12, 0.70)) as well as poorer scores on several MoCA sub-domains. Conclusion : We present the normative data for MoCA in people with PD without clinical dementia. Age appeared to be the only associated factor for lower level of cognition, suggestive of Mild cognitive impairment in PD (PD-MCI) in PD without clinical diagnosis of dementia

    AutoTriggER: Named Entity Recognition with Auxiliary Trigger Extraction

    Deep neural models for low-resource named entity recognition (NER) have shown impressive results by leveraging distant super-vision or other meta-level information (e.g. explanation). However, the costs of acquiring such additional information are generally prohibitive, especially in domains where existing resources (e.g. databases to be used for distant supervision) may not exist. In this paper, we present a novel two-stage framework (AutoTriggER) to improve NER performance by automatically generating and leveraging "entity triggers" which are essentially human-readable clues in the text that can help guide the model to make better decisions. Thus, the framework is able to both create and leverage auxiliary supervision by itself. Through experiments on three well-studied NER datasets, we show that our automatically extracted triggers are well-matched to human triggers, and AutoTriggER improves performance over a RoBERTa-CRFarchitecture by nearly 0.5 F1 points on average and much more in a low resource setting.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, Best paper at TrustNLP@NAACL 2021 and presented at WeaSuL@ICLR 202

    YesDying, death and bereavement do not occur in a social vacuum. How individuals and groups experience these phenomena will be largely influenced by the social context in which they occur. To develop an adequate understanding of dying, death and bereavement we therefore need to incorporate a sociological perspective into our analysis. This paper examines why a sociological perspective is necessary and explores various ways in which sociology can be of practical value in both intellectual and professional contexts. A case study comparing psychological and sociological perspectives is offered by way of illustration
