Emission Line Galaxies in the STIS Parallel Survey II: Star Formation Density
We present the luminosity function of [OII]-emitting galaxies at a median
redshift of z=0.9, as measured in the deep spectroscopic data in the STIS
Parallel Survey (SPS). The luminosity function shows strong evolution from the
local value, as expected. By using random lines of sight, the SPS measurement
complements previous deep single field studies. We calculate the density of
inferred star formation at this redshift by converting from [OII] to H-alpha
line flux as a function of absolute magnitude and find rho_dot=0.043 +/- 0.014
Msun/yr/Mpc^3 at a median redshift z~0.9 within the range 0.46<z<1.415 (H_0 =
70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7. This density is consistent with a
(1+z)^4 evolution in global star formation since z~1. To reconcile the density
with similar measurements made by surveys targeting H-alpha may require

Measurements of the Diffuse Ultraviolet Background and the Terrestrial Airglow with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph
Far-UV observations in and near the Hubble Deep Fields demonstrate that the
Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) can potentially obtain unique and
precise measurements of the diffuse far-ultraviolet background. Although STIS
is not the ideal instrument for such measurements, high-resolution images allow
Galactic and extragalactic objects to be masked to very faint magnitudes, thus
ensuring a measurement of the truly diffuse UV signal. The programs we have
analyzed were not designed for this scientific purpose, but would be sufficient
to obtain a very sensitive measurement if it were not for a weak but
larger-than-expected signal from airglow in the STIS 1450-1900 A bandpass. Our
analysis shows that STIS far-UV crystal quartz observations taken near the limb
during orbital day can detect a faint airglow signal, most likely from NI\1493,
that is comparable to the dark rate and inseparable from the far-UV background.
Discarding all but the night data from these datasets gives a diffuse
far-ultraviolet background measurement of 501 +/- 103 ph/cm2/sec/ster/A, along
a line of sight with very low Galactic neutral hydrogen column (N_HI = 1.5E20
cm-2) and extinction (E(B-V)=0.01 mag). This result is in good agreement with
earlier measurements of the far-UV background, and should not include any
significant contribution from airglow. We present our findings as a warning to
other groups who may use the STIS far-UV camera to observe faint extended
targets, and to demonstrate how this measurement may be properly obtained with

Is communication guidance mistaken? Qualitative study of parent-oncologist communication in childhood cancer
background: Guidance encourages oncologists to engage patients and relatives in discussing the emotions that accompany cancer diagnosis and treatment. We investigated the perspectives of parents of children with leukaemia on the role of paediatric oncologists in such discussion.
methods: Qualitative study comprising 33 audio-recorded parentâoncologist consultations and semi-structured interviews with 67 parents during the year following diagnosis.
results: Consultations soon after the diagnosis were largely devoid of overt discussion of parental emotion. Interviewed parents did not describe a need for such discussion. They spoke of being comforted by oncologistsâ clinical focus, by the biomedical information they provided and by their calmness and constancy. When we explicitly asked parents 1 year later about the oncologistsâ role in emotional support, they overwhelmingly told us that they did not want to discuss their feelings with oncologists. They wanted to preserve the oncologistsâ focus on their childâs clinical care, deprecated anything that diverted from this and spoke of the value of boundaries in the parentâoncologist relationship.
conclusion: Parents were usually comforted by oncologists, but this was not achieved in the way suggested by communication guidance. Communication guidance would benefit from an enhanced understanding of how emotional support is experienced by those who rely on it

Effects of prenatal and postnatal depression, and maternal stroking, at the glucocorticoid receptor gene
In animal models, prenatal and postnatal stress is associated with elevated hypothalamicâpituitary axis (HPA) reactivity mediated via altered glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene expression. Postnatal tactile stimulation is associated with reduced HPA reactivity mediated via increased GR gene expression. In this first study in humans to examine the joint effects of prenatal and postnatal environmental exposures, we report that GR gene (NR3C1) 1-F promoter methylation in infants is elevated in the presence of increased maternal postnatal depression following low prenatal depression, and that this effect is reversed by self-reported stroking of the infants by their mothers over the first weeks of life

Mismatched prenatal and postnatal maternal depressive symptoms and child behaviours: a sex-dependent role for NR3C1 DNA methylation in the Wirral Child Health and Development Study
Evolutionary hypotheses predict that male fetuses are more vulnerable to poor maternal conditions (Sex-biased Maternal Investment), but female fetuses are at greater risk of glucocorticoid-mediated disorders where there is a mismatch between fetal and postnatal environments (Predictive Adaptive Response). Self-reported prenatal and postnatal depression and maternal report of child anxious-depressed symptoms at 2.5, 3.5 and 5.0 years were obtained from an âextensiveâ sample of first-time mothers (N = 794). Salivary NR3C1 1-F promoter methylation was assayed at 14 months in an âintensiveâ subsample (n = 176) and stratified by psychosocial risk. Generalised structural equation models were fitted and estimated by maximum likelihood to allow the inclusion of participants from both intensive and extensive samples. Postnatal depression was associated with NR3C1 methylation and anxious-depressed symptoms in daughters of mothers with low prenatal depression (prenatal-postnatal depression interaction for methylation, p 0.001; for child symptoms, p = 0.011). In girls, NR3C1 methylation mediated the association between maternal depression and child anxious-depressed symptoms. The effects were greater in girls than boys: the test of sex differences in the effect of the prenatal-postnatal depression interaction on both outcomes gave X2 (2) = 5.95 (p = 0.051). This was the first human study to show that epigenetic and early behavioural outcomes may arise through different mechanisms in males and females
Affordable Rotating Fluid Demonstrations for Geoscience Education: The DIYnamics Project
Demonstrations using rotating tanks of fluid can help demystify otherwise counterintuitive behaviors of atmospheric, oceanic, and planetary interior fluid motions. But the expense and complicated assembly of existing rotating table platforms limit their appeal for many schools, especially those below the university level. Here, we introduce Do-It-Yourself Dynamics (DIYnamics), a project developing extremely low-cost rotating tank platforms and accompanying teaching materials. The devices can be assembled in a few minutes from household items, all available for purchase online. Ordering, assembly, and operation instructions are available on the DIYnamics website. Videos using these and other rotating tables to teach specific concepts such as baroclinic instability are available on the DIYnamics YouTube channelâincluding some in Spanish. The devices, lesson plans, and demonstrations have been successfully piloted at multiple middle schools, in a university course, and at public science outreach events. These uses to date convince us of the DIYnamics materialsâ pedagogical value for instructors from well-versed university professors to Kâ12 science teachers with little background in fluid dynamics
Measurement of Cosmic Shear with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph
Weak lensing by large-scale structure allows a direct measure of the dark
matter distribution. We have used parallel images taken with the Space
Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure
weak lensing, or cosmic shear. We measure the shapes of 26036 galaxies in 1292
STIS fields and measure the shear variance at a scale of 0.51 arcminutes. The
charge transfer efficiency (CTE) of STIS has degraded over time and introduces
a spurious ellipticity into galaxy shapes during the readout process. We
correct for this effect as a function of signal to noise and CCD position. We
further show that the detected cosmic shear signal is nearly constant in time
over the approximately four years of observation. We detect cosmic shear at the
5.1 sigma level, and our measurement of the shear variance is consistent with
theoretical predictions in a LambdaCDM universe. This provides a measure of the
normalization of the mass power spectrum sigma_8=(1.02 +- 0.16)
(0.3/Omega_m)^{0.46} (0.21/Gamma)^{0.18}$. The one-sigma error includes noise,
cosmic variance, systematics and the redshift uncertainty of the source
galaxies. This is consistent with previous cosmic shear measurements, but tends
to favor those with a high value of sigma_8. It is also consistent with the
recent determination of sigma_8 from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe

The class III PI(3)K Vps34 promotes autophagy and endocytosis but not TOR signaling in Drosophila
Degradation of cytoplasmic components by autophagy requires the class III phosphatidylinositol 3 (PI(3))âkinase Vps34, but the mechanisms by which this kinase and its lipid product PI(3) phosphate (PI(3)P) promote autophagy are unclear. In mammalian cells, Vps34, with the proautophagic tumor suppressors Beclin1/Atg6, Bif-1, and UVRAG, forms a multiprotein complex that initiates autophagosome formation. Distinct Vps34 complexes also regulate endocytic processes that are critical for late-stage autophagosome-lysosome fusion. In contrast, Vps34 may also transduce activating nutrient signals to mammalian target of rapamycin (TOR), a negative regulator of autophagy. To determine potential in vivo functions of Vps34, we generated mutations in the single Drosophila melanogaster Vps34 orthologue, causing cell-autonomous disruption of autophagosome/autolysosome formation in larval fat body cells. Endocytosis is also disrupted in Vps34â/â animals, but we demonstrate that this does not account for their autophagy defect. Unexpectedly, TOR signaling is unaffected in Vps34 mutants, indicating that Vps34 does not act upstream of TOR in this system. Instead, we show that TOR/Atg1 signaling regulates the starvation-induced recruitment of PI(3)P to nascent autophagosomes. Our results suggest that Vps34 is regulated by TOR-dependent nutrient signals directly at sites of autophagosome formation
Emission Line Galaxies in the STIS Parallel Survey I: Observations and Data Analysis
In the first three years of operation STIS obtained slitless spectra of
approximately 2500 fields in parallel to prime HST observations as part of the
STIS Parallel Survey (SPS). The archive contains almost 300 fields at high
galactic latitude (|b|>30) with spectroscopic exposure times greater than 3000
seconds. This sample contains 220 fields (excluding special regions and
requiring a consistent grating angle) observed between 6 June 1997 and 21
September 2000, with a total survey area of about 160 square arcminutes. At
this depth, the SPS detects an average of one emission line galaxy per three
fields. We present the analysis of these data, and the identification of 131
low to intermediate redshift galaxies detected by optical emission lines. The
sample contains 78 objects with emission lines that we infer to be redshifted
[OII]3727 emission at 0.43<z<1.7. The comoving number density of these objects
is comparable to that of H-alpha emitting galaxies in the NICMOS parallel
observations. One quasar and three probable Seyfert galaxies are detected. Many
of the emission-line objects show morphologies suggestive of mergers or

Refounding of Activity Concept ? Towards a Federative Paradigm for Modeling and Simulation

However, because this notion is used in specific contexts, it becomes vague. Here, the notion of activity is scrutinized in various contexts and, accord-ingly, put in perspective. It is discussed through four scientific disciplines: computer science, biology, economics, and epis-temology. The definition of activity usually used in simulation is extended to new qualitative and quantitative definitions. In computer science, biology and economics disciplines, the new simulation activity definition is first applied critically. Then, activity is discussed generally. In epistemology, activity is discussed, in a prospective way, as a possible framework in models of human beliefs and knowledge
