The lexicography of Tibetan
This chapter provides an overview of Tibetan lexicography, from the ninth century to today. While most Tibetan dictionaries were compiled in an ad hoc manner, some used citation collections. Electronic corpora have been built for Tibetan, but they have not as yet been used to assist dictionary compilation. The various obstacles that need to be overcome first in order to be able to compile corpus-based dictionaries are discussed

gual dictionaries, both to and from such languages
as English, French, German, Latin, Japanese, etc. and specialized dictionaries focusing on medicine, plants, dialects, archaic terms, neologisms, etc. (cf. Walter 2006, McGrath 2008). However, if one classifies Tibetan dictionaries by the methods of their compilation the
accomplishments of Tibetan lexicography are less impressive.
Methodologies of dictionary compilation divide heuristically into three types. First, some dictionaries lack explicit methodology; these works assemble words in an
ad hoc manner and illustrate them with invented examples. Second, there are dictionaries that are compiled over very long periods of time on the basis of collections of slips
recording attestations of words as used in context. Third, more recent dictionaries are compiled on the basis of electronic text corpora, which are processed computationally to aid in the precision, consistency and speed of dictionary compilation. These methods may be called respectively the 'informal method', the 'traditional method', and the 'modern method'. The overwhelming majority of Tibetan dictionaries were compiled with the informal method. Only five Tibetan dictionaries use the traditional methodology. No Tibetan dictionary yet compiled makes
use of the modern method
Model simulations of the Bay of Fundy Gyre : 1. Climatological results

A set of climatological runs are conducted to evaluate the relative importance of the different forcing mechanisms affecting the gyre. The main mechanisms are tidal rectification and density-driven circulation. Stronger circulation of the gyre occurs during the later part of the stratified season (July–August and September–October). The density-driven flow around the gyre is set up by weak tidal mixing in the deep basin in the central Bay of Fundy and strong tidal mixing on the shallow flanks around Grand Manan Island and western Nova Scotia. Spring river discharge has an important influence on near-surface circulation but only a small effect when averaged over the entire water column. Retention of particles in the gyre is controlled by the residual tidal circulation, increased frontal retention during stratified periods, wind stress, and interactions with the adjacent circulation of the Gulf of Maine. Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus in Scottish Atlantic Salmon Farms, 1996–2001
The rapid growth of aquaculture has provided opportunities for the emergence of diseases. Programs designed to monitor these pathogens are useful for analysis of regional variation and trends, provided methods are standardized. Data from an official monitoring program were used to analyze the emergence of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus in Scottish salmon farms from 1996 to 2001. An annual increase in the prevalence of this virus was found in saltwater (10%) and freshwater sites (2% to 3%), with a much faster increase (6.5%) in Shetland’s freshwater sites. No significant increase in the virus was detected in the marine farms of southern mainland Scotland. However, the virus had become very prevalent at marine sites and was almost ubiquitous in Shetland by 2001, and thus the prevalence of this virus at marine sites may be underestimated. Because several diseases have emerged or are emerging in fish farming, aquaculture surveillance programs represent a rich potential source of data on emerging diseases
Chronologic distribution of stroke after minimally invasive versus conventional coronary artery bypass
AbstractObjectivesWe sought to investigate whether the chronologic distribution of the onset of stroke occurring after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) without cardiopulmonary bypass (off-pump CABG) is different from the conventional on-pump approach (CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass).BackgroundOff-pump CABG has been associated with a lower stroke rate, compared with conventional on-pump CABG. However, it is unknown whether the chronologic distribution of the onset of stroke is different between the two approaches.MethodsWe evaluated the chronologic distribution of postoperative stroke in patients undergoing CABG from June 1996 to August 2001 (n = 10,573). Preoperative risk factors for stroke were identified using the Northern New England preoperative estimate of stroke risk. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent predictors of early stroke and to delineate the association between the surgical approach and the chronologic distribution of the onset of stroke.ResultsStroke occurred in 217 patients (2%, n = 10,573). A total of 44 (20%) and 173 (80%) of these patients had stroke after off-pump CABG and on-pump CABG, respectively. The median time for the onset of stroke was two days (range 0 to 11 days) after on-pump CABG versus four days (range 0 to 14 days) after off-pump CABG (p < 0.01). On-pump CABG was associated with a higher risk of early stroke (odds ratio 5.3, 95% confidence interval 2.6 to 10.9; p < 0.01) compared with off-pump CABG.ConclusionsCompared with off-pump CABG, on-pump CABG is associated with an earlier onset of postoperative stroke during the recovery phase, suggesting different mechanisms in the pathogenesis of stroke between the two surgical approaches
Model simulations of the Bay of Fundy Gyre : 2. Hindcasts for 2005–2007 reveal interannual variability in retentiveness

Here we assess recent interannual variability in the strength of the gyre using data assimilative model simulations. Realistic hindcast representations of the gyre are considered during cruises in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Assimilation of shipboard and moored acoustic Doppler current profiler velocities is used to improve the skill of the simulations, as quantified by comparison with nonassimilated drifter trajectories. Our hindcasts suggest a weakening of the gyre system during May 2005. Retention of simulated passive particles in the gyre during that period was highly reduced. A recovery of the dense water pool in the deep part of the basin by June 2006 resulted in a return to particle retention characteristics similar to climatology. Retention estimates reached a maximum during May 2007 (subsurface) and June–July 2007 (near surface). Interannual variability in the strength of the gyre was primarily modulated by the stratification of the dense water pool inside the Grand Manan Basin.
