    A hysteretic multiscale formulation for validating computational models of heterogeneous structures

    A framework for the development of accurate yet computationally efficient numerical models is proposed in this work, within the context of computational model validation. The accelerated computation achieved herein relies on the implementation of a recently derived multiscale finite element formulation, able to alternate between scales of different complexity. In such a scheme, the micro-scale is modelled using a hysteretic finite elements formulation. In the micro-level, nonlinearity is captured via a set of additional hysteretic degrees of freedom compactly described by an appropriate hysteric law, which gravely simplifies the dynamic analysis task. The computational efficiency of the scheme is rooted in the interaction between the micro- and a macro-mesh level, defined through suitable interpolation fields that map the finer mesh displacement field to the coarser mesh displacement field. Furthermore, damage related phenomena that are manifested at the micro-level are accounted for, using a set of additional evolution equations corresponding to the stiffness degradation and strength deterioration of the underlying material. The developed modelling approach is utilized for the purpose of model validation; firstly, in the context of reliability analysis; and secondly, within an inverse problem formulation where the identification of constitutive parameters via availability of acceleration response data is sought

    Flexural behaviour of hot-finished high strength steel square and rectangular hollow sections

    High strength steels, considered in the context of the structural Eurocodes, as steels with a yield strength over 460 MPa, are gaining increasing attention from structural engineers and researchers owing to their potential to enable lighter and more economic structures. This paper focuses on the bending strength of hot-finished high strength steel (HSS) square and rectangular hollow sections; the results of detailed experimental and numerical studies are presented and structural design rules for HSS cross-sections are proposed. A total of 22 in-plane bending tests, in three-point bending and four-point bending configurations, on HSS sections in grades S460 and S690 were conducted. The experimental results were replicated by means of non-linear finite element modelling. Upon validation of the finite element models, parametric studies were performed to assess the structural response of HSS sections over a wider range of cross-section slenderness, cross-section aspect ratio and moment gradient. The experimental results combined with the obtained numerical results were used to assess the suitability of the current European (EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1993-1-12) cross-section classification limits for HSS structural components.     Flexural Wrinkling Strength of Lightly Profiled Sandwich Panels with Transverse Joints in the Foam Core

    In Australia, sandwich panels are commonly made of flat or lightly profiled steel faces and expanded polystyrene foam cores, and are increasingly used as roof and wall claddings in industrial and commercial buildings. Flexural wrinkling is often the governing criterion in the design of these panels. The use of lightly profiled faces is expected to increase the flexural wrinkling stress considerably whereas the presence of joints between the polystyrene foam slabs in the transverse direction introduces a reduction to the flexural wrinkling stress. Therefore a series of full scale experiments and finite element analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of lightly profiled faces and transverse joints on the flexural wrinkling stress of panels subjected to a lateral pressure loading. The results showed that properly designed lightly profiled panels provided considerable improvement to flexural wrinkling strength over flat panels whereas the presence of transverse joints caused a significant reduction to wrinkling strength.     Elastic lateral buckling of simply supported LiteSteel beams subject to transverse loading

    The buckling strength of a new cold-formed hollow flange channel section known as LiteSteel beam (LSB) is governed by lateral distortional buckling characterised by simultaneous lateral deflection, twist and web distortion for its intermediate spans. Recent research has developed a modified elastic lateral buckling moment equation to allow for lateral distortional buckling effects. However, it is limited to a uniform moment distribution condition that rarely exists in practice. Transverse loading introduces a non-uniform bending moment distribution, which is also often applied above or below the shear centre (load height). These loading conditions are known to have significant effects on the lateral buckling strength of beams. Many steel design codes have adopted equivalent uniform moment distribution and load height factors to allow for these effects. But they were derived mostly based on data for conventional hot-rolled, doubly symmetric I-beams subject to lateral torsional buckling. The moment distribution and load height effects of transverse loading for LSBs, and the suitability of the current design modification factors to accommodate these effects for LSBs is not known. This paper presents the details of a research study based on finite element analyses on the elastic lateral buckling strength of simply supported LSBs subject to transverse loading. It discusses the suitability of the current steel design code modification factors, and provides suitable recommendations for simply supported LSBs subject to transverse loading
