Relationships of real-time glucose levels on cognitive-linguistic performance in adults with and without diabetes

    Get PDF
People with diabetes have been shown to have challenges in cognitive-linguistic performance. This is the first study of (1) the relationship between continuous glucose levels measured during extensive cognitive- linguistic assessment and (2) patterns of variation in glucose levels corresponding to performance, in adults with and without diabetes.  Results are contextualized in terms of self-reported symptoms. Despite reporting less symptom severity, adults with diabetes scored worse on each measure for which performance differed significantly between groups. For both groups, differences between repeated measures of performance correlated significantly with differences in actual glucose values. Clinical and research implications are discussed

Aerial Thermographic Image-Based Assessment of Thermal Bridges Using Representative Classifications and Calculations

Since the middle of the 20th century many any buildings were built without any energy standards and still have a comparably poor energy quality. To obtain an overview of the current thermal quality of buildings in a whole city district, it may be promising to work with thermographic images obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Aerial thermography represents a fast and cost-efficient approach compared to traditional terrestrial thermography. In this paper, we describe an approach to finding thermal bridges on aerial thermographic images and characterizing them in terms of their risk of mold formation, energy losses, retrofit costs, and retrofit benefits. To identify thermal bridge types that can be detected reliably on aerial thermographic images, we use a dataset collected with a UAV in an urban district of the German city of Karlsruhe. We classify and characterize 14 relevant thermal bridge types for the German building cohorts of the 1950s and 1960s. Concerning the criterion of mold formation, thermal bridges of window components, basement ceiling slabs, balcony slabs, floor slabs, and attics are found to be particularly relevant to retrofit projects. Regarding energy savings, the retrofit of thermal bridges of window sills, window lintels, and attics shows high potential. The retrofit of attics seems to be less attractive, when also taking into account the necessary retrofit costs

Identification of binding proteins for cholesterol absorption inhibitors as components of the intestinal cholesterol transporter

    Get PDF
AbstractTo identify protein components of the intestinal cholesterol transporter, rabbit small intestinal brush border membrane vesicles were submitted to photoaffinity labeling using photoreactive derivatives of 2-azetidinone cholesterol absorption inhibitors. An integral membrane protein of Mr 145.3±7.5 kDa was specifically labeled in brush border membrane vesicles from rabbit jejunum and ileum. Its labeling was concentration-dependently inhibited by the presence of cholesterol absorption inhibitors whereas bile acids, D-glucose, fatty acids or cephalexin had no effect. The inhibitory potency of 2-azetidinones to inhibit photolabeling of the 145 kDa protein correlated with their in vivo activity to inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption. These results suggest that an integral membrane protein of Mr 145 kDa is (a component of) the cholesterol absorption system in the brush border membrane of small intestinal enterocytes

Redaktionsschluss: 27.04.202

Martensitic growth in ZrO2--An in situ, small particle, TEM study of a single-interface transformation

An in situ TEM experiment on martensitic growth was performed using submicron ZrO2 particles of a square-platelet shape. The transformation was between the orthorhombic and the monoclinic phases and involved a simple shear plus a dilatation in the shear plane. The o/m interface propagated at a speed of 2 nm/s, while maintaining a sharp habit plane which was stepped on the unit cell scale. The average inclination of this stepped interface obeyed the invariant plane strain condition. While no long-range stresses were present, dislocation-like line contrast was revealed at the steps. These results are analyzed in terms of the coherency dislocation concept. Fundamental properties, such as the interfacial energy, Peierls stress and nucleus size, have been deduced.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/28555/1/0000357.pd
