Comparison of Glucose Monitoring Methods during Steady-State Exercise in Women
Data from Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems may help improve overall daily glycemia; however, the accuracy of CGM during exercise remains questionable. The objective of this single group experimental study was to compare CGM-estimated values to venous plasma glucose (VPG) and capillary plasma glucose (CPG) during steady-state exercise. Twelve recreationally active females without diabetes (aged 21.8 ± 2.4 years), from Central Washington University completed the study. CGM is used by individuals with diabetes, however the purpose of this study was to first validate the use of this device during exercise for anyone. Data were collected between November 2009 and April 2010. Participants performed two identical 45-min steady-state cycling trials (~60% Pmax) on non-consecutive days. Glucose concentrations (CGM-estimated, VPG, and CPG values) were measured every 5 min. Two carbohydrate gel supplements along with 360 mL of water were consumed 15 min into exercise. A product-moment correlation was used to assess the relationship and a Bland-Altman analysis determined error between the three glucose measurement methods. It was found that the CGM system overestimated mean VPG (mean absolute difference 17.4 mg/dL (0.97 mmol/L)) and mean CPG (mean absolute difference 15.5 mg/dL (0.86 mmol/L)). Bland-Altman analysis displayed wide limits of agreement (95% confidence interval) of 44.3 mg/dL (2.46 mmol/L) (VPG compared with CGM) and 41.2 mg/dL (2.29 mmol/L) (CPG compared with CGM). Results from the current study support that data from CGM did not meet accuracy standards from the 15197 International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Efficacy of Online Training for Improving Camp Staff Competency
Preparing competent staff is a critical issue within the camp community. This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of an online course for improving staff competency in camp healthcare practices among college-aged camp staff and a comparison group (N = 55). We hypothesized that working in camp would increase competency test scores due to opportunities for staff to experientially apply knowledge learned online. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyse the cross-level effects of a between-individuals factor (assignment to experimental or comparison group) and within-individual effects of time (pre-test, post-test #1, and post-test #2) on online course test scores. At post-test #2, the difference in average test scores between groups was ~30 points, with the treatment group scoring lower on average than the comparison group. Factors that may have influenced these findings are explored, including fatigue and the limited durability of online learning. Recommendations for research and practice are discussed
Testing the Impact of Group Offending on Behavioural Similarity in Serial Robbery
Behavioural case linkage assumes that offenders behave in a similar way across their crimes. However, group offending could impact on behavioural similarity. This study uses robbery data from two police forces to test this by comparing the behavioural similarity of pairs of lone offences (LL), pairs of group offences (GG) and pairs of offences where one crime was committed alone and the other in a group (GL). Behavioural similarity was measured using Jaccard’s coefficients. Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to examine differences between the three categories within the linked samples. No statistically significant differences were found for linked GG compared to linked LL pairs. However, differences emerged between GL and the other categories for some behaviours (especially control) suggesting caution should be applied when linking group and lone offences committed by the same perpetrator. Differences between linked and unlinked pairs were assessed using receiver operating characteristic. The results suggest it is possible to distinguish between linked and unlinked pairs based on behaviour especially within the GG and LL categories. There were, however, fewer significant findings for the GL sample, suggesting there may be issues linking crimes where the offender commits one crime as part of a group and the other alone
The perceived barriers to the inclusion of rainwater harvesting systems by UK house building companies
This work investigates the barriers that exist to deter the implementation of rainwater harvesting into new UK housing. A postal questionnaire was sent to a selection of large, medium and small house-builders distributed across the UK. Questions were asked concerning potential barriers to the inclusion of rainwater harvesting in homes separated into five sections; (1) institutional and regulatory gaps, (2) economic and financial constraints, (3) absence of incentives, (4) lack of information and technical knowledge, and (5) house-builder attitudes. The study concludes that although the knowledge of rainwater systems has increased these barriers are deterring house-builders from installing rainwater harvesting systems in new homes. It is further acknowledged that the implementation of rainwater harvesting will continue to be limited whilst these barriers remain and unless resolved, rainwater harvesting's potential to reduce the consumption of potable water in houses will continue to be limited
Student Satisfaction and Performance in an Online Teacher Certification Program
The article presents a study which demonstrates the effectiveness of an online post baccalaureate teacher certification program developed by a Wisconsin university. The case method approach employing multiple methods and multiple data sources were used to investigate the degree to which pre-service teachers were prepared to teach. It was concluded that the study supports online delivery as an effective means of teacher preparation, but it was limited in the number of students followed into their first year of teaching
An Electrochemical Study of Frustrated Lewis Pairs: A Metal-free Route to Hydrogen Oxidation
[Image: see text] Frustrated Lewis pairs have found many applications in the heterolytic activation of H(2) and subsequent hydrogenation of small molecules through delivery of the resulting proton and hydride equivalents. Herein, we describe how H(2) can be preactivated using classical frustrated Lewis pair chemistry and combined with in situ nonaqueous electrochemical oxidation of the resulting borohydride. Our approach allows hydrogen to be cleanly converted into two protons and two electrons in situ, and reduces the potential (the required energetic driving force) for nonaqueous H(2) oxidation by 610 mV (117.7 kJ mol(–1)). This significant energy reduction opens routes to the development of nonaqueous hydrogen energy technology
Ferromagnetic resonators synthesized by metal-organic decomposition epitaxy
Metal-organic decomposition epitaxy is an economical wet-chemical approach suitable to synthesize high-quality low-spin-damping films for resonator and oscillator applications. This work reports the temperature dependence of ferromagnetic resonances and associated structural and magnetic quantities of yttrium iron garnet nanofilms that coincide with single-crystal values. Despite imperfections originating from wet-chemical deposition and spin coating, the quality factor for out-of-plane and in-plane resonances approaches 600 and 1000, respectively, at room temperature and 40 GHz. These values increase with temperature and are 100 times larger than those offered by commercial devices based on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor voltage-controlled oscillators at comparable production costs
Metabolic, inflammatory and haemostatic effects of a low-dose continuous combined HRT in women with type 2 diabetes: potentially safer with respect to vascular risk?
BACKGROUND Conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) containing conjugated equine oestrogen (CEE) and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) increases triglyceride, C- reactive protein (CRP) and coagulation Factor VII concentrations, potentially explaining their increased coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke risk. OBJECTIVE To assess the metabolic effects of a continuous combined HRT containing 1 mg oestradiol and 0.5 mg norethisterone or matching placebo. DESIGN Double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial. PATIENTS Fifty women with type 2 diabetes. MEASUREMENTS Classical and novel risk factors for vascular disease. RESULTS Triglyceride concentration was not altered (P = 0.31, change in active arm relative to placebo) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration declined 13% (P = 0.018). IL-6 concentration (mean difference -1.42 pg/ml, 95% CI: -2.55 to - 0.29 IU/dl, P = 0.015), Factor VII (-32 IU/dl, -43 to -21 IU/l, P lt 0.001) and tissue plasminogen activator antigen (by 13%, P = 0.005) concentrations fell, but CRP was not significantly altered (P = 0.62). Fasting glucose (P = 0.026) also declined significantly, but there are no significant effects on HBA1c, Factor IX or APC resistance. CONCLUSIONS HRT containing 1 mg oestradiol and 0.5 mg norethisterone may avoid the adverse metabolic effects potentially implicated in the elevated CHD and stroke risk induced by conventional higher dose HRT. This type of preparation may therefore be more suitable than conventional HRT for women at elevated CHD risk such as those with type 2 diabetes. Large randomized controlled trials of such low dose preparations, powered for cardiovascular end points, are now needed
Evaluating the impact of enhanced horizontal resolution over the Antarctic domain using a variable-resolution Earth system model
Earth system models are essential tools for understanding
the impacts of a warming world, particularly on the contribution of polar
ice sheets to sea level change. However, current models lack full coupling
of the ice sheets to the ocean and are typically run at a coarse resolution
(1∘ grid spacing or coarser). Coarse spatial resolution is
particularly a problem over Antarctica, where sub-grid-scale orography is
well-known to influence precipitation fields, and glacier models require
high-resolution atmospheric inputs. This resolution limitation has been
partially addressed by regional climate models (RCMs), which must be forced
at their lateral and ocean surface boundaries by (usually coarser) global
atmospheric datasets, However, RCMs fail to capture the two-way coupling
between the regional domain and the global climate system. Conversely,
running high-spatial-resolution models globally is computationally
expensive and can produce vast amounts of data.
Alternatively, variable-resolution grids can retain the benefits of high
resolution over a specified domain without the computational costs of
running at a high resolution globally. Here we evaluate a historical
simulation of the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2)
implementing the spectral element (SE) numerical dynamical core (VR-CESM2)
with an enhanced-horizontal-resolution (0.25∘) grid over the
Antarctic Ice Sheet and the surrounding Southern Ocean; the rest of the
global domain is on the standard 1∘ grid. We compare it to
1∘ model runs of CESM2 using both the SE dynamical core and the
standard finite-volume (FV) dynamical core, both with identical physics and
forcing, including prescribed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and sea ice concentrations from
observations. Our evaluation reveals both improvements and degradations in
VR-CESM2 performance relative to the 1∘ CESM2. Surface mass
balance estimates are slightly higher but within 1Â standard deviation of
the ensemble mean, except for over the Antarctic Peninsula, which is
impacted by better-resolved surface topography. Temperature and wind
estimates are improved over both the near surface and aloft, although the
overall correction of a cold bias (within the 1∘ CESM2 runs) has
resulted in temperatures which are too high over the interior of the ice
sheet. The major degradations include the enhancement of surface melt as
well as excessive cloud liquid water over the ocean, with resultant impacts
on the surface radiation budget. Despite these changes, VR-CESM2 is a
valuable tool for the analysis of precipitation and surface mass balance
and thus constraining estimates of sea level rise associated with the
Antarctic Ice Sheet.</p
