Lensing Effects on the Protogalaxy Candidate cB58 and their Implications for the Cosmological Constant

The amplification of the protogalaxy candidate cB58 due to gravitational lensing by the foreground cluster of galaxies MS1512.4+3647 is quantified based on recent ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observations. It is found that the amplification is at most 25 for any reasonable cosmological model with or without cosmological constant. It is also argued that the system may be used to place new constraints on the value of the cosmological constant. Two‐Dimensional Phase Separation: Co-Adsorption of Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide on the (111) Surface of Rhodium

The co‐adsorption of CO and H_2 on Rh(111) at low temperature (∼ 100 K) has been studied using thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDS) and Low‐Energy Electron Diffraction(LEED). The probability of adsorption of CO on rhodium pretreated with hydrogen has been found to decrease slowly with increasing amounts of hydrogen on the surface. In addition, the effect of surface hydrogen on the CO LEED patterns indicates segregation of hydrogen and CO. These results can be explained in terms of a strong repulsive CO–H interaction and a mobile precursor model of CO adsorption

Global Stability of a Premixed Reaction Zone (Time-Dependent Liñan’s Problem)

Global stability properties of a premixed, three-dimensional reaction zone are considered. In the nonadiabatic case (i.e., when there is a heat exchange between the reaction zone and the burned gases) there is a unique, spatially one-dimensional steady state that is shown to be unstable (respectively, asymptotically stable) if the reaction zone is cooled (respectively, heated) by the burned mixture. In the adiabatic case, there is a unique (up to spatial translations) steady state that is shown to be stable. In addition, the large-time asymptotic behavior of the solution is analyzed to obtain sufficient conditions on the initial data for stabilization. Previous partial numerical results on linear stability of one-dimensional reaction zones are thereby confirmed and extended

Class-switched anti-insulin antibodies originate from unconventional antigen presentation in multiple lymphoid sites

Autoantibodies to insulin are a harbinger of autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes in humans and in non-obese diabetic mice. To understand the genesis of these autoantibodies, we investigated the interactions of insulin-specific T and B lymphocytes using T cell and B cell receptor transgenic mice. We found spontaneous anti-insulin germinal center (GC) formation throughout lymphoid tissues with GC B cells binding insulin. Moreover, because of the nature of the insulin epitope recognized by the T cells, it was evident that GC B cells presented a broader repertoire of insulin epitopes. Such broader recognition was reproduced by activating naive B cells ex vivo with a combination of CD40 ligand and interleukin 4. Thus, insulin immunoreactivity extends beyond the pancreatic lymph node–islets of Langerhans axis and indicates that circulating insulin, despite its very low levels, can have an influence on diabetogenesis
