IT quality and organization development: using action research to promote employee engagement, leadership development, learning, and organizational improvement
Within IT areas, Quality is often reduced to visions strongly influenced by operational and
tactical instruments, relegating to minor dimensions crucial Organization Development (OD)
aspects which sustain Learning, and Innovation. The current Program, grounded on the relevance
of these aspects, has targeted, within a Bank’s IT Division, an approach to induce organizational
change, and to produce strategic actions and behavioural changes which have led to an effective
improvement on Customers, and Employees’ Satisfaction.
It has followed an Action Research paradigm – addressing a complex, transformational, planed
change, and using a multidimensional, integrative approach, based on a holistic, open systemic
view – not targeting for the development of new theories, but, mainly, the fulfilment of existing
empirical, and methodological gaps.
It has integrated a two-cycle OD approach, where a first cycle focused on Service Culture,
Leadership, and Employee Engagement has developed the conditions for a second cycle based on
the acquired knowledge (double loop) and devoted to strategy implementation.
Although the intervention’s achievements cannot be generalized outside the context, they can be
transposed to other settings. They’ve revealed important Management Implications which form
the relevance basis for this doctoral dissertation, namely a holistic, values-based, and
participative framework to address organizational transformation, and the associated critical
success factors. An opportunity exists to further research in the field, linking together an OD
approach with a TQM approach to organizational excellence.
Also, a metamodel of the Action Research process which has been followed – evidencing, at a
conceptual level, the main sub-processes, data groups, and linking points between the action and
the research dimensions – has been produced. An opportunity exists for further research on the
development of this metamodel, including a conceptual data model and a system behavioural
Vegetation
Due to their complexity, vegetation phenomena are not understandable without
a consistent conceptual framework. A few indispensable concepts to explore the
northeastern Portuguese ultramafic vegetation are set out in Tables 9 and 10. Association. The Phytosociology fundamental abstract unit is the association or associatio.
The concept of association comprises an ecological-taxonomic model of the reality.
Therefore, the association includes the notion of a plant community (biological information:
floristic, physiognomic etc.) that occupies a particular biotope (chorologic
information) where a specific set of environmental conditions can be found, i.e. the
habitat (environmental information). The taxonomic element is mainly supported on
the floristic composition, which is characteristic and statistically constant between
associations. The development of a hierarchical syntaxonomic system (synsystem) is
based above all on floristic, but also on environmental, biogeographic and physiognomic
characters. Although the association concept is not a true synonym of phytocoenosis
the two terms are often used interchangeably, which may result abusiv

New contributions on flora and vegetation of northeastern Portugal ultramafic outcrops
In this work we present some syntaxonomic novelties on the vegetation of the referred ultramafic outcrops focused on
three new associations: Jonopsidio abulensis-Sedetum maireani, Armerio daveaui-Agrostietum castellanae and Seseli peixotoani-
Avenuletum lusitanicae; in addition, a new nomenclatural combination of an endemic taxon from the Morais massif
(Armeria langei subsp. marizii) is proposed. We also clarify the phytocoenotic structure of the Portuguese vegetation series
through a simple diagrammatic representation, which is then applied to one unique climatophilous vegetation series present

The Foodborne illnesses are caused mainly by microorganisms and constitute a major public health concern worldwide. Foods are the main vehicles of disease transmission, which is mainly due to poor hygiene practices and manufacturing. In catering establishments, hygiene and food safety are ensured by the application of good hygiene practices and manufacturing, as well as by the implementation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. The lack of knowledge by handlers and therefore bad hygiene and manufacturing practices means that they are a major source of food contamination associated with foodborne illness.
The objectives of this thesis were to describe the activities performed and to evaluate the analyzes performed during the internship, in the company VLM consultants, more specifically, in the laboratory YourLab SA. In addition, it was intended to evaluate the relationship between the handlers and surfaces hygiene with contamination of the final product, in small food industries, where we used data analysis from 2011 to 2014.
In the water analyze, there was a high percentage of samples considered "satisfactory", in other words, below the limit set by law. Specifically regarding the analyze, count of microorganisms at 22°C and 37°C, there was a higher number of contaminating samples at 37°C, showing that, in water, the contamination detected was mainly of fecal origin. As for food analysis, it was found that most of the product samples were free of pathogenic microorganisms. There was a large number of contaminating processed products, which reveals that there was contamination after the confection by cross-contamination due to bad hygienic and manufacturing practices or due to incorrect confection. In the analysis of microorganisms at 30ºC in swabs, it was found higher contamination of utensils and surfaces.
From the results of the work related to the evaluation of the contamination of food and swabs collected at the same time, it was found that 21.31% of product samples and swabs were contaminated at the same time, showing that there is a lack of knowledge of hygiene and manufacturing practices by handlers. Within the contaminated swabs related to the product contamination, it was found that this correlation was higher in butchers, as a result of the use of fresh products. Within the contaminated swabs related to the product contamination, the contamination level was higher in surfaces and utensils, indicating that the contamination of the product by handlers occurs even with low levels of contamination. Given the results presented, we conclude that the HACCP plan is not followed strictly, only 33,77% of the products and swabs where not contaminated, so there is urgent need for a more rigorous and frequent checking of the plan in question. This verification should focus primarily on the level of knowledge of the rules of hygiene and food safety as well as respect towards them, by food handlers
Flora
The invaluable commented checklist of the vascular flora of the ultramafic
rocks of northeastern Portugal of Pinto da Silva (1970) has been recently reviewed
by Aguiar and Monteiro-Henriques (ined.). These authors’ accept 568 taxa, 29% of
which (164 taxa) are new additions to the original catalogue of Pinto da Silva (1970).
A subset of it with the most frequent and floristically relevant species is presented
in Table 6. New additions have been highlighted with an asterisk (*). The most noticeable
neophytes have been included and marked with an open rhombus (◊). A
few synonyms have been added to facilitate the reading of the list of Pinto da Silva
(1970). Familiar circumscription and higher taxa are according, respectively, to APG
III (2009) and Chase & Reveal (2009). The main sources of infrafamiliar taxonomic information
were the Flora Iberica (Castroviejo 1981+), Nova Flora de Portugal (Franco
1971; 1984; Franco & Rocha Afonso (1994; 1998), The Checklist of the Portuguese
Vascular Flora (Sequeira et al. 2011) and, among others, the taxonomic revisions of
Romero et al. (1988) (Agrostis), Díaz Lifante & Valdés (1996) (Asphodelus), La Guardia
& Blanca (1987) (Scorzonera), Schippmann (1991) and Voght (1991) (Leucanthemum).
We followed different taxonomic or nomenclatural criteria from Flora Iberica
or Nova Flora de Portugal in Armeria langei subsp. marizii, Anthyllis sampaioana,
A. vulneraria subsp. lusitanica, Alyssum serpyllifolium subsp. lusitanicum, Asplenium
adiantum-nigrum subsp. corunnense, Carlina hispanica, Centaurea langei, Festuca elegans
subsp. merinoi, Helianthemum apenninum subsp. rothmaleri, Tuberaria guttata
and Trifolium striatum var. brevidens.
The preparation of a checklist of ultramafic vascular flora is a difficult task. First
of all, flora checklists are unfinished assignments because plants come and go with
time. On the other hand, the northeastern Portugal ophiolites lithology is heterogeneous
and complex. Peridotites, and similar ultramafic rocks, appear in stretched
outcrops dispersed among macromorphologically similar basic rocks. The soils that
have covered the ultramafic rocks many times catch materials from nearby mafic
and leucocratic rocks. Finally, deep soils, rich in organic matter, derived from ultramafic
rocks, usually have a similar flora to other nearby lithologies. The serpentine
effect is in practice impossible to spatialize and quantify; consequently an ultramafic
vascular flora checklist brings together plants of rather diverse ecology, and is by
itself of limited scientific value

Fraxino Angustifoliae-Ulmetum Glabrae: an original endemic and extremely localized forest from mainland Portugal
The natural occurrence of Ulmus
glabra in mainland Portugal has been
recently recognized. These punctuated
occurrences are peripheral and scattered
from the main distribution area in
the centre and north of Europe. U. glabra
colonizes soils of heavy textures,
relatively rich in bases, cool and frequently
rocky on steep slopes (e.g. ravines,
shadowy canyons), under supra to
orotemperate, humid to hyperhumid
bioclimates. This combination of ecological
factors is rather unusual inmainland
Portugal, however during an inventory
excursion in the north of Portugal
(Serra do Montemuro), in a small
canyon ofBalsemão riverwe detected a
mesophilous/temporihygrophilous forest
dominated by U. glabra and Fraxinus
angustifolia. This forest is extremely
localized occurring on Ordovician
silty schists, under upper mesotemperate
to supratemperate hyperhumid
bioclimate. It probably corresponds
to an interglacial refugium for the
species. We ran an edaphoclimatic
model within a geographical information
system, in order to highlight other
possible areas of occurrence for this
forests and guide future efforts in finding
it in mainland Portugal
