    LEED studies of lead on copper (100)

    Lead layers on copper (100) at coverages from 0.5 to 0.6 were investigated by quantitative LEED and AES measurements and dynamical LEED calculations. Comparisons of intensity measurements with dynamical calculations for the (Wurzel2 x Wurzel2)R45° structure show that the Pb atoms are adsorbed in hollow sites. The Cu---Pb distance is close to the sum of both metallic radii. The dense lead monolayer at a coverage of 0.6 exhibits a c(5 Wurzel2 x Wurzel2)R45° superstructure with cmm symmetry of the diffraction pattern. Calculations for five models were performed under variation of several geometric parameters. Most analogies were found for regular arrangements of distorted (Wurzel2 x Wurzel2)R45° domains, separated by antiphase boundaries. This result is in consistency with observations of poorly ordered (Wurzel2 x Wurzel2)R45° antiphase domains at intermediate coverages

    a b s t r a c t In this paper, a model for (joint) dynamic chance constraints is proposed and applied to an optimization problem in water reservoir management. The model relies on discretization of the decision variables but keeps the probability distribution continuous. Our approach relies on calculating probabilities of rectangles which is particularly useful in the presence of independent random variables but works equally well in the case of correlated variables.     LEED analysis of a dense lead monolayer on copper (100)

    A LEED intensity analysis is reported for the c(5√2 × √2)R45° structure, which is formed by a dense lead monolayer on the (100) surface of copper. Evidence was found that the adsorbate atoms do not arrange pseudo-hexagonally (i.e. without sixfold intra-layer coordination) as expected for a dense two-dimensional package. It was confirmed that the lead atoms still tend to occupy the hollow sites of the (100) surface and arrange in the narrow domains of a strained c(2 × 2) structure. These domains are regularly intersected by dislocation lines, so that adjacent domains are in antiphase position. Within this arrangement the adsorbate atoms are mutually equidistant with closer spacings than in bulk lead. The growth of the monolayer and the epitaxial growth of lead on copper (100) in Stranski-Krastanov mode are correlated to this structure

    Effectiveness and tolerability of pegylated interferon alfa-2b in combination with ribavirin for treatment of chronic hepatitis C: the PegIntrust Study

    Background and study aims : Large international clinical trials conducted in the past 5 years rapidly improved the treatment of chronic hepatitis C; however, it is unclear whether the advances seen in clinical trials are being paralleled by similar improvements in routine clinical practice. PegIntrust is a Belgian community-based trial evaluating the sustained virological response. Patients and Methods : Observational study of 219 patients receiving pegylated interferon alfa-2b (1.5 mu g/kg/wk) and weight. based ribavirin (800-1200 mg/day) for 48 weeks. Primary study end point was sustained virological response (SVR), defined as undetectable HCV RNA 6 months after the completion of treatment. Results : In total, 108 patients (49.3 %) had undetectable HCV RNA at the end of therapy, 91(41.6%) attaining SVR. Of the 111 patients without an end-of-treatment response, 28 were non-responders, and 21 had virological breakthrough. In total, 134 patients attained early virological response (EVR); 88 (65.7%) of those patients attained SVR. In contrast, 82 (96.5 %) of the 85 patients who did not attain EVR also did not attain SVR. Age, fibrosis score and baseline viral load were identified as important predictors of treatment outcome. The most frequently reported serious adverse events resulting in treatment discontinuation were anemia (n = 10), fatigue/asthenia/malaise (n = 6) and fever (n = 3). Conclusion : Our data indicate that treatment of chronic hepatitis C with PEG-IFN alfa-2b plus weight-based ribavirin results in favourable treatment outcomes in a Belgian cohort of patients treated in community-based clinical practice.     Influence of the scattering potential model on low energy electron diffraction from Cu(001)−c(2 × 2)-Pb

    A dynamical LEED intensity analysis is reported for Cu(001)−c(2 × 2)-Pb. The adsorbate layer distance from the substrate is determined as 2.29 Å, and the topmost interlayer spacing for the substrate is the same as in bulk Cu, in contrast to a contraction for clean Cu(001). This structural result is, within the accuracy reached, insensitive to changes in the assumed scattering potential models. The r-factors suggest a weak preference for an energy-dependent exchange correlation and a moderate one for adding a localized adsorption part inside the muffin-tin spheres. The sensitivity of spectra and r-factors to changes in the assumed isotropic Debye temperature for Pb suggests that vibrational anisotropy should be taken into account in order to improve the accuracy of the analysis. Calculated spin polarization spectra are very sensitive to the exchange approximation, the localized absorption and the Debye temperature. Together with experimental data, they should be useful in particular for determining the vibrational anisotropy

    Bioelectric Signaling Regulates Size in Zebrafish Fins

    The scaling relationship between the size of an appendage or organ and that of the body as a whole is tightly regulated during animal development. If a structure grows at a different rate than the rest of the body, this process is termed allometric growth. The zebrafish another longfin (alf) mutant shows allometric growth resulting in proportionally enlarged fins and barbels. We took advantage of this mutant to study the regulation of size in vertebrates. Here, we show that alf mutants carry gain-of-function mutations in kcnk5b, a gene encoding a two-pore domain potassium (K+) channel. Electrophysiological analysis in Xenopus oocytes reveals that these mutations cause an increase in K+ conductance of the channel and lead to hyperpolarization of the cell. Further, somatic transgenesis experiments indicate that kcnk5b acts locally within the mesenchyme of fins and barbels to specify appendage size. Finally, we show that the channel requires the ability to conduct K+ ions to increase the size of these structures. Our results provide evidence for a role of bioelectric signaling through K+ channels in the regulation of allometric scaling and coordination of growth in the zebrafish
