Sharing risk experiences of polydrug use on YouTube

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss what kinds of messages about the risks of polydrug use are mediated in YouTube video blogs and on what kinds of norms and values do the vloggers base these messages. Design/methodology/approach The data consist of 12 YouTube videos where vloggers share their own experiences of the risks and harms of polydrug use. In the analysis, the actantial model of Greimas' theory of structural semiotics was applied. Findings Two main types of videos were identified - sobriety and controlled use - where polydrug use has different meanings. In sobriety videos, polydrug use is presented as the heavy use of multiple substances. In the videos dealing with controlled use, polydrug use is taken as the combining of certain substances. Whereas the sobriety videos emphasized total abstinence from all substances due to their destructiveness, the videos about controlled use emphasized risk awareness when combining substances. Despite modern digital media and a new generation operating in this space, the messages of the risks of polydrug use mainly repeat those of familiar discourses. Originality/value This paper offers an analytical insight into the ways in which the risks of polydrug use are conceptualized in a YouTube context that is increasingly gaining a foothold among the youth. Greimas' actantial model offers a fruitful tool to find semiotic meanings that hide under the surface. The model has not been applied in previous drug research.Peer reviewe

Effects of conversation content on viewing dyadic conversations

People typically follow conversations closely with their gaze. We asked whether this viewing is influenced by what is actually said in the conversation and by the viewer’s psychological condition. We recorded the eye movements of healthy (N = 16) and depressed (N = 25) participants while they were viewing video clips. Each video showed two people, each speaking one line of dialogue about socio-emotionally important (i.e., personal) or unimportant topics (matter-of-fact). Between the spoken lines, the viewers made more saccadic shifts between the discussants, and looked more at the second speaker, in personal vs. matter-of-fact conversations. Higher depression scores were correlated with less looking at the currently speaking discussant. We conclude that subtle social attention dynamics can be detected from eye movements and that these dynamics are sensitive to the observer’s psychological condition, such as depression

Attentional bias towards interpersonal aggression in depression - an eye movement study

Depressed individuals exhibit an attentional bias towards mood-congruent stimuli, yet evidence for biased processing of threat-related information in human interaction remains scarce. Here, we tested whether an attentional bias towards interpersonally aggressive pictures over interpersonally neutral pictures could be observed to a greater extent in depressed participants than in control participants. Eye movements were recorded while the participants freely viewed visually matched interpersonally aggressive and neutral pictures, which were presented in pairs. Across the groups, participants spent more time looking at neutral pictures than at aggressive pictures, probably reflecting avoidance behavior. When the participants could anticipate the stimulus valence, depressed participants - but not controls - showed an early attentional bias towards interpersonally aggressive pictures, as indexed by their longer first fixation durations on aggressive pictures than on neutral pictures. Our results thus preliminarily suggest both an early attentional bias towards interpersonal aggression, which is present, in depressed participants, also when aggression contents are anticipated, and a later attentional avoidance of aggression. The early depression-related bias in information processing may have maladaptive effects on the way depressed individuals perceive and function in social interaction and can, therefore, maintain depressed mood

Maastomenetelmien osin epäonnistunut pilotointi toi kuitenkin arvokasta tietoa seurantakoealojen sijoittelun haasteellisuudesta, seurantoihin soveltuvien kohteiden vähäisyydestä ja esimerkiksi vedenpinnan tasoa mittaavien loggereiden laitteisto-ongelmista. Jatkossa vesienpalautuksen vaikutusten todentamiseen tarvittaisiin rimpinevoille suunnattu systemaattinen seurantaverkosto.

Activity and in situ DRIFT studies on vanadia catalysts during oxidative dehydrogenation of sulfur-contaminated methanol

Silica-titania (70/30) supported vanadium catalysts were prepared, characterized, and studied in oxidative dehydrogenation of sulfur-contaminated methanol. The quality of vanadia species is dependent on temperature and gas conditions during preparation, support type, support specific surface area and VOx surface density. For example, upon heating the amount of V2O5 decrease along with formation of polymeric species. Such changes may occur also during the catalytic reaction. The reaction experiments and characterization results showed that the stability of polymeric vanadia species and total acidity has a connection with better formaldehyde production performance. The best performance was observed for N2-calcined silica-titania catalyst. Easy reducibility of the catalyst, as in the case of reference catalysts, leads to further oxidation of formaldehyde.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Synchrotron radiation based characterization of structural evolution of alkali halide clusters

    No full text
Abstract In this work, evolution of structural properties of anhydrous and hydrated alkali halide clusters are studied using synchrotron radiation based photoelectron spectroscopy. Alkali metal core level spectra of small anhydrous RbCl, RbBr, CsCl and CsBr clusters indicate a NaCl structure. For larger CsBr clusters a structural phase transition to CsCl structure is likely the case. Alkali halide core level spectra of mixed RbBr-water clusters indicate that at dilute concentration the salt is dissolved by the water cluster but ion pairing increases with concentration. Modeling of gas phase cluster formation and electronic structure calculations of core level chemical shifts are used to interpret the experimental spectra

The purpose of this thesis was to figure out the experiences on rehabilitation and returning to sport after an injury of young active athletes. The goal was to improve rehabilitation of young athletes, focusing also on the psychological and social aspects of rehabilitation rather than only the physical aspect. Our thesis was commissioned by Turun Seudun Urheiluakatemia. In our thesis we interviewed three athletes under eighteen years of age. We used theme-based interview and the interviews were recorded. We analyzed the interviews using data-based content analysis. The information we got from our three informants shows that the mental support of the team and staying with the team are important factors in the rehabilitation and supporting the motivation of the injured athlete. In addition, the interviewees felt that the physiotherapist was one of the most important persons in the rehabilitation progress. However, the amount of physiotherapy sessions was deemed too low
