    Atomic discreteness and the nature of structural equilibrium in conductance histograms of electromigrated Cu-nanocontacts

    We investigate the histograms of conductance values obtained during controlled electromigration thinning of Cu thin films. We focus on the question whether the most frequently observed conductance values, apparent as peaks in conductance histograms, can be attributed to the atomic structure of the wire. To this end we calculate the Fourier transform of the conductance histograms. We find all the frequencies matching the highly symmetric crystallographic directions of fcc-Cu. In addition, there are other frequencies explainable by oxidation and possibly formation of hcp-Cu. With these structures we can explain all peaks occurring in the Fourier transform within the relevant range. The results remain the same if only a third of the samples are included. By comparing our results to the ones available in the literature on work-hardened nanowires we find indications that even at low temperatures of the environment, metallic nanocontacts could show enhanced electromigration at low current densities due to defects enhancing electron scattering

    A Convergent Finite Volume Method for a Kinetic Model for Interacting Species

    We propose an upwind finite volume method for a system of two kinetic equations in one dimension that are coupled through nonlocal interaction terms. These cross-interaction systems were recently obtained as the mean-field limit of a second-order system of ordinary differential equations for two interacting species. Models of this kind are encountered in a myriad of contexts, for instance, to describe large systems of indistinguishable agents such as cell colonies, flocks of birds, schools of fish, herds of sheep. The finite volume method we propose is constructed to conserve mass and preserve positivity. Moreover, convex functionals of the discrete solution are controlled, which we use to show the convergence of the scheme. Finally, we investigate the scheme numerically

    Shell effects and free-electrons in electromigrated oxidized Cu-nanocontacts

    Electromigration in interconnects continues to be an important field of study in integrated circuits as the interconnects are planned to shrink in size at comparable pace as the semiconductor functional elements. Through shrinking the interconnects approach the regime where quantum size effects become important. The observation of quantum size and shell effects is usually restricted either to low-temperatures or vacuum conditions or to chemically inert materials such as Au. Here, we show that in electromigrated Cu nanocontacts such effects can be observed at room temperature and room pressure even in the presence of oxidation. Our data provide evidence that the nanocontacts are nearly spherical objects with a triangular-cylindrical symmetry of their electronic wave functions with a stronger free-electron-like character compared to previous results. We do not observe a detrimental effect of oxygen. The presence of shell effects has implications for the technological use of Cu nanocontacts as interconnects in integrated circuits and could lead to the use of electronic wave functions of shells in such interconnects

    The; Plasmodium falciparum; (; Pf; ) cysteine-rich protective antigen (; Pf; CyRPA) has emerged as a promising blood-stage candidate antigen for inclusion into a broadly cross-reactive malaria vaccine. This highly conserved protein among various geographical strains plays a key role in the red blood cell invasion process by; P. falciparum; merozoites, and antibodies against; Pf; CyRPA can efficiently prevent the entry of the malaria parasites into red blood cells. The aim of the present study was to develop a human-compatible formulation of the; Pf; CyRPA vaccine candidate and confirming its activity in preclinical studies. Recombinant; Pf; CyRPA expressed in HEK 293 cells was chemically coupled to phosphoethanolamine and then incorporated into the membrane of unadjuvanted influenza virosomes approved as antigen delivery system for humans. Laboratory animals were immunised with the virosome-based; Pf; CyRPA vaccine to determine its immunogenic properties and in particular, its capacity to elicit parasite binding and growth-inhibitory antibodies. The vaccine elicited in mice and rabbits high titers of; Pf; CyRPA-specific antibodies that bound to the blood-stage parasites. At a concentration of 10 mg/mL, purified total serum IgG from immunised rabbits inhibited parasite growth in vitro by about 80%. Furthermore, in a; P. falciparum; infection mouse model, passive transfer of 10 mg of purified total IgG from; Pf; CyRPA vaccinated rabbits reduced the in vivo parasite load by 77%. Influenza virosomes thus represent a suitable antigen delivery system for the induction of protective antibodies against the recombinant; Pf; CyRPA, designating it as a highly suitable component for inclusion into a multivalent and multi-stage virosomal malaria vaccine

    Classical Symmetries of Some Two-Dimensional Models

    It is well-known that principal chiral models and symmetric space models in two-dimensional Minkowski space have an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries. Because of the relevance of symmetric space models to duality symmetries in string theory, the hidden symmetries of these models are explored in some detail. The string theory application requires including coupling to gravity, supersymmetrization, and quantum effects. However, as a first step, this paper only considers classical bosonic theories in flat space-time. Even though the algebra of hidden symmetries of principal chiral models is confirmed to include a Kac--Moody algebra (or a current algebra on a circle), it is argued that a better interpretation is provided by a doubled current algebra on a semi-circle (or line segment). Neither the circle nor the semi-circle bears any apparent relationship to the physical space. For symmetric space models the line segment viewpoint is shown to be essential, and special boundary conditions need to be imposed at the ends. The algebra of hidden symmetries also includes Virasoro-like generators. For both principal chiral models and symmetric space models, the hidden symmetry stress tensor is singular at the ends of the line segment.Comment: 51 pages, minor corrections and added reference

    The equations of motion of the massless sector of the two dimensional string theory, obtained by compactifying the heterotic string theory on an eight dimensional torus, is known to have an affine o(8,24) symmetry algebra generating an O(8,24) loop group. In this paper we study how various known discrete S- and T- duality symmetries of the theory are embedded in this loop group.     O parcial de urina é um exame simples e rápido com informações importantes sobre o funcionamento dos rins e do trato urinário. A introdução de novas tecnologias aumentou a exatidão e a produtividade, no entanto, a falta de padronização e a escassez de informação técnica são fatores limitantes que podem comprometer a interpretação do exame. O objetivo deste trabalho foi ampliar o conhecimento sobre automação em urinálise e torná-la mais consistente na prática laboratorial. Foram abordados os sistemas semi-automatizados, exame microscópico automatizado por citometria de fluxo, imagem digital com reconhecimento de partículas, sistema modular misto, microscopia digital com contraste de fase, além dos novos parâmetros: relação albumina/creatinina e proteína/creatinina. Foi observado que a automação da análise química evita as discrepâncias entre resultados e os erros analíticos nos métodos convencionais e que, a análise microscópica automatizada melhora a reprodutibilidade e permite uma maior padronização, no entanto, a liberação automática ou a necessidade de revisão microscópica serão definidas pela equipe profissional. Foi concluído que os diferentes sistemas de automação apresentam vantagens e desvantagens e a escolha do método depende do porte do laboratório, do custo-benefício e da população atendida com foco na confiabilidade dos resultados para um diagnóstico correto

    Kinnersley--type representation is constructed for the four--dimensional Einstein--Maxwell--dilaton--axion system restricted to space--times possessing two non--null commuting Killing symmetries. New representation essentially uses the matrix--valued SL(2,R)SL(2,R) formulation and effectively reduces the construction of the Geroch group to the corresponding problem for the vacuum Einstein equations.
