Exact and approximate solutions to the oblique shock equations for real-time applications
The derivation of exact solutions for determining the characteristics of an oblique shock wave in a supersonic flow is investigated. Specifically, an explicit expression for the oblique shock angle in terms of the free stream Mach number, the centerbody deflection angle, and the ratio of the specific heats, is derived. A simpler approximate solution is obtained and compared to the exact solution. The primary objectives of obtaining these solutions is to provide a fast algorithm that can run in a real time environment

Thermodynamics of beta-amyloid fibril formation
Amyloid fibers are aggregates of proteins. They are built out of a peptide
called --amyloid (A) containing between 41 and 43 residues,
produced by the action of an enzyme which cleaves a much larger protein known
as the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). X-ray diffraction experiments have
shown that these fibrils are rich in --structures, whereas the shape of
the peptide displays an --helix structure within the APP in its
biologically active conformation. A realistic model of fibril formation is
developed based on the seventeen residues A12--28 amyloid peptide, which
has been shown to form fibrils structurally similar to those of the whole
A peptide. With the help of physical arguments and in keeping with
experimental findings, the A12--28 monomer is assumed to be in four
possible states (i.e., native helix conformation, --hairpin, globular
low--energy state and unfolded state). Making use of these monomeric states,
oligomers (dimers, tertramers and octamers) were constructed. With the help of
short, detailed Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations of the three monomers and
of a variety of oligomers, energies for these structures were obtained. Making
use of these results within the framework of a simple yet realistic model to
describe the entropic terms associated with the variety of amyloid
conformations, a phase diagram can be calculated of the whole many--body
system, leading to a thermodynamical picture in overall agreement with the
experimental findings. In particular, the existence of micellar metastable
states seem to be a key issue to determine the thermodynamical properties of
the system
Topical Simvastatin as Host-Directed Therapy against Severity of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Mice.
We recently demonstrated that statins mediate protection against intracellular pathogens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Listeria monocytogenes in mice. Here, we investigated the immunomodulatory potential of simvastatin as a topical or systemic host-directed drug therapy in controlling inflammatory responses in an experimental mouse model of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major (LV39). In an ear infection model, topical application of simvastatin directly on established lesions significantly reduced severity of the disease reflected by ear lesion size and ulceration. The host protective effect was further accompanied by decreased parasite burden in the ear and draining lymph nodes in both BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. Pre-treatment of these mice on a low-fat cholesterol diet and systemic simvastatin also reduced footpad swelling, as well as parasite burdens and ulceration/necrosis in the more robust footpad infection model, demonstrating the prophylactic potential of simvastatin for cutaneous leishmaniasis. Mechanistically, following L. major infection, simvastatin-treated primary macrophages responded with significantly reduced cholesterol levels and increased production of hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, simvastatin-treated macrophages displayed enhanced phagosome maturation, as revealed by increased LAMP-3 expression in fluorescent microscopy and Western blot analysis. These findings demonstrate that simvastatin treatment enhances host protection against L. major by increasing macrophage phagosome maturation and killing effector functions
Nature versus Nurture: The curved spine of the galaxy cluster X-ray luminosity -- temperature relation
The physical processes that define the spine of the galaxy cluster X-ray
luminosity -- temperature (L-T) relation are investigated using a large
hydrodynamical simulation of the Universe. This simulation models the same
volume and phases as the Millennium Simulation and has a linear extent of 500
h^{-1} Mpc. We demonstrate that mergers typically boost a cluster along but
also slightly below the L-T relation. Due to this boost we expect that all of
the very brightest clusters will be near the peak of a merger. Objects from
near the top of the L-T relation tend to have assembled much of their mass
earlier than an average halo of similar final mass. Conversely, objects from
the bottom of the relation are often experiencing an ongoing or recent merger.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA
Using salinity to improve nutritional and market value of strawberries
Plants respond to salinity by producing antioxidants and osmolytes; some of these are nutritionally useful to humans (e.g. phenolics), or may improve the sensory quality of produce (e.g. sugars). For the current study, strawberries were irrigated with 0, 10, 20 or 40 mM NaCl, and the responses in antioxidants, phenolics, and flavour attributes were measured. A linear positive relationship was observed between salt stress and antioxidant concentrations, and the DPPH antioxidant assay responded more clearly than the FRAP assay. Phenolics were increased with statistical significance by salinity at all treatment levels, although trends differed between total phenolics and the subclasses anthocyanins and total flavonoids. It was seen that mild salinity (10 mM) with a low impact on yield could be used to increase antioxidants (6-10% above control) and total phenolics (11-16% above control). However differences between cultivars outweighed differences due to salinity in treatments below 20 mM NaCl. We found that sugars in strawberries (unlike other fruits) weren’t increased by salinity treatment. The lack of sugar increase can be explained by suggesting that organic acids are more important osmolytes than sugars for strawberries under salinity. However it was also determined that the failure of strawberries to increase their soluble sugars during salt stress can be explained by the lean nutrient regimes used by researchers, which don’t represent commercial production practices. Practically, mild salinity (≤20 mM) can be used to increase strawberry fruit value, but should be combined with an appropriate nutrient regime to avoid harm to flavour quality. The varieties Elsanta and Elsinore are both suitable for salt treatment, but Elsanta is better for antioxidant and phenolic production, as well as being more salt tolerant
A PCA-based automated finder for galaxy-scale strong lenses
We present an algorithm using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to subtract
galaxies from imaging data, and also two algorithms to find strong,
galaxy-scale gravitational lenses in the resulting residual image. The combined
method is optimized to find full or partial Einstein rings. Starting from a
pre-selection of potential massive galaxies, we first perform a PCA to build a
set of basis vectors. The galaxy images are reconstructed using the PCA basis
and subtracted from the data. We then filter the residual image with two
different methods. The first uses a curvelet (curved wavelets) filter of the
residual images to enhance any curved/ring feature. The resulting image is
transformed in polar coordinates, centered on the lens galaxy center. In these
coordinates, a ring is turned into a line, allowing us to detect very faint
rings by taking advantage of the integrated signal-to-noise in the ring (a line
in polar coordinates). The second way of analysing the PCA-subtracted images
identifies structures in the residual images and assesses whether they are
lensed images according to their orientation, multiplicity and elongation. We
apply the two methods to a sample of simulated Einstein rings, as they would be
observed with the ESA Euclid satellite in the VIS band. The polar coordinates
transform allows us to reach a completeness of 90% and a purity of 86%, as soon
as the signal-to-noise integrated in the ring is higher than 30, and almost
independent of the size of the Einstein ring. Finally, we show with real data
that our PCA-based galaxy subtraction scheme performs better than traditional
subtraction based on model fitting to the data. Our algorithm can be developed
and improved further using machine learning and dictionary learning methods,
which would extend the capabilities of the method to more complex and diverse
galaxy shapes
Pigmentary keratitis in pugs in the United Kingdom: prevalence and associated features
BACKGROUND: Pigmentary keratitis (PK) is commonly recognised in Pugs, but its aetiology is not completely understood. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated features of PK in Pugs in the United Kingdom (UK). RESULTS: A total of 210 Pugs (420 eyes) were recruited from 12 UK dog shows and social events. The median age of Pugs recruited was 2.50 years (range 0.25-16.25 years). Pigmentary keratitis was detected in 369/420 (87.8%) eyes and in at least one eye 193/210 (91.9%) Pugs, of which 17/193 (8.8%) were affected unilaterally and 176/193 (91.2%) bilaterally. Pigmentary keratitis was typically mild to moderate (46.3 and 49.9% of eyes, respectively). Detection of PK was significantly associated with increased age (P = 0.002) and the presence of medial entropion of the lower eyelid (MELE) (P = 0.001). Severity of PK was significantly associated with the grade of MELE (P < 0.001). There was also a correlation between the presence of limbal pigment and PK (P = 0.036) that warrants further study. CONCLUSIONS: This study estimated a high disease prevalence of PK in UK Pugs, and demonstrated significant associations with age and the presence of MELE. These associations, which have not been previously reported, offer an insight into the underlying pathophysiology of this condition in Pugs. The results encourage further population research, such as prospective longitudinal studies. These findings also support the development of clinical and breeding strategies based on the reduction of MELE and, possibly, limbal pigment.</p
High fluxes of deep volatiles from ocean island volcanoes: Insights from El Hierro, Canary Islands
Basaltic volcanism contributes significant fluxes of volatiles (CO2, H2O, S, F, Cl) to the Earth’s surface environment. Quantifying volatile fluxes requires initial melt volatile concentrations to be determined, which can be accessed through crystal-hosted melt inclusions. However, melt inclusions in volatile-rich mafic alkaline basalts, such as those erupted at ocean islands, often trap partially degassed melts, meaning that magmatic volatile fluxes from these tectonic settings are often significantly underestimated. We have measured major, trace element and volatile concentrations in melt inclusions from a series of young (<20 ka) basanites from El Hierro, Canary Islands. Our melt inclusions show some of the highest CO2 (up to 3600 ppm) and S (up to 4290 ppm) concentrations measured in ocean island basalts to date, in agreement with data from the recent 2011-2012 eruption. Volatile enrichment is observed in melt inclusions with crystallisation-controlled
major element compositions and highly variable trace element ratios such as La/Yb. We use volatile-trace element ratios to calculate original magmatic CO2 contents up to 4.2 wt%, which indicates at least 65% of the original CO2 was degassed prior to melt inclusion trapping. The trace element contents and ratios of El Hierro magmas are best reproduced by 1-8% partial melting of a garnet lherzolite mantle source. Our projected CO2 (200-680 ppm) and S (265-450 ppm) concentrations for the source are consistent with upper
estimates for primitive mantle. However, El Hierro magmas have elevated F/Nd and F/Cl in comparison with melts from a primitive mantle, indicating that the mantle must also contain a component enriched in F and other volatiles, most probably recycled oceanic lithosphere. Our modelled original magmatic CO2 contents indicates that, per mass unit, volatile fluxes from El Hierro magmas are up to two orders of magnitude greater than from typical
mid-ocean ridge basalts and 1.5 to 7 times greater than from recent Icelandic eruptions, indicating large variability in the primary volatile content of magmas formed in di fferent geodynamic settings, or even within di fferent ocean islands. Our results highlight the importance of characterising mantle heterogeneity in order to accurately constrain both short- and long-term magmatic volatile emissions and fluxes from ocean island volcanoes.NERC studentship NE/L002469/1
