    Teachers’ Pedagogical Competence in Teaching English as Foreign Language

    This research aims to find out how the pedagogical competence of teachers in learning English as a foreign language at MTs. Negeri Model Sorong City. The theory that the researchers examined as the basis of this research was the concept of pedagogic competence, definition of teacher, the objective of pedagogic competence, teaching and learning English as foreign language, the objective of learning English, and teacher classroom management. The research was conducted at MTs Negeri Model Sorong City 2022. The approach used was a qualitative with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques used were interviews and questionnaires. The instrument in this research was the researchers themselves assisted by some colleagues assisted by using interview guidelines, questionnaires sheet, and recording devices. The role in the research was the researchers themselves, some students, and English teachers at the school. The result of this research shows that the English teachers’ pedagogical competence was good enough quality. It was shown that the teachers fulfill the scope of the pedagogical competence of the teachers. This is also supported by the acquisition of percentage or average results from questionnaire data 8.9% in aspect of understanding of students, 10.2% in aspect of learning planning, 10.6% in aspect implementation of educative and dialogical learning, 5.8% in aspect utilization technology of learning, 9.5% in aspect evaluation of learning outcomes, 7.3% in aspect development of student potential, 10,7% in aspect understanding of education insights or foundations, and 9.9% in aspect development of curriculum or syllabus

    THE USE OF GROUP INVESTIGATION METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF SORONG MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY

    This research is aimed to conduct research about using Group Investigation Method to improve students’ speaking ability. Therefore, the researcher observed in English Department of Sorong Muhammadiyah University. The researcher uses quantitative method and the design of this research used pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research was taken from third semester of class C in Teacher and Trainning Education Faculty in English Department of Sorong Muhammadiyah University. The sample was taken with randomized sampling and consisted of 30 students. Based on the result teaching reading used collaborative strategy reading at the second year students of SMP Negeri 1 sorong. The researcher found that the teaching reading using collaborative strategy reading did not give much influence to students reading ability. With the use of Collaborative Strategy Reading in teaching and learning made the students very happy and they think that the strategy of reading was interested in improving the foreign language of them. They gave good response and active in the class. Where the mean score of pre test was 31,67 and the mean score of post test was 46,67 and the t – test was 12.5 and t - table was 1.714. Based on the analysis of the research, Collaborative Strategy Reading,did not give much influence to student reading ability.This statement was proved because in control group students also could improve their reading skill well at the second year students of SMP Negeri 1 Sorong When the t- test was 12.5 more high than t- table was 1.714.Â

    Fostering Religious Tolerance in West Papua: A Case Study of Muhammadiyah's Higher-educational Institutions

    This study aims to identify the role of Muhammadiyah's higher-educational institutions in fostering religious tolerance in West Papua. Applying the qualitative method, this research is conducted in three Muham­­­ma­diyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua i.e., Universitas Muham­madiyah Sorong (UM Sorong) Sorong City, Uni­versitas Pendidikan Muham­madiyah Sorong (UNIMUDA) Sorong Regency, and Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pen­didikan (STKIP) Muham­ma­diyah Manok­wari. The results showed that Muham­ma­diyah’s higher-educational institutions are inclusive in terms of spiritual understanding. In fostering religious tolerance there are three approaches taken by the three Muhammadiyah higher-educational institutions in West Papua: 1) social approach, 2) cultural approach, and 3) excellent service approaches. The strategies implemented the role includes: 1) dissem­ina­ting Muham­madiyah’s vision and mission, 2) inculcating tolerance values since the beginning of students joining Muham­madiyah higher-educational institutions, 3) strengthening tolerance value by lecturing processes, conducting, sharing sessions both formally and informally, and 4) empowering student activity units and other facilities that support multicultural student interaction processes

    The Ability to Use English for Specific Purposes by Hotel Receptionists

    This research was exploring the use of English for a specific purpose by hotel receptionists in Sorong city. The data was conducted with quantitative but is not pure students. To collect data, the researchers used instruments such as written tests, questionnaires,s and speaking as instruments. The data was analyzed to descriptive analysis. The result of the study shows that the receptionists’ ability in using English for specific purposes was poor. It was shown by a written test that consisted of technical terms in the hotel. Highest data through an English film, English books. But on the other hand, hotel management never played to improve their English speaking ability, particularly in English coursework, English training, English seminar inside and outside the hotel

    The Effect of Online Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic at SMP Muhammadiyah Al-Amin Sorong City

    The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the conventional learning process. So a solution is needed to answer this problem. Online learning is one alternative that can overcome these problems. This study was to obtain an overview of the implementation of online learning at SMP Muhammadiyah Al-Amin Sorong City as an effort to suppress the spread of Covid-19 at the junior high school level. The researchers focused on the impact of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample of this study was thirteen consisting of 10 eighth grade students, 1 sports teacher, 1 computer teacher, and 1 principal. Data collected through interview techniques. The first is to conduct semi-structured interviews with 10 students who have mobile phones as a tool for participating in online learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact felt during online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The second conducted interviews with 2 teachers and the principal. The purpose of the interview is to support data from the results of student interviews. The results of this study show that there are positive impact, 7 participants feel that online learning does not interfere with their activities, and 5 participants feel that online learning saves their transportation money, and 5 participants better understand the online learning process, because it is helped by material sources on the internet. While the negative impact, 5 participants felt that the learning process was inefficient, 4 participants considered the learning materials provided could not be understood because of the limited internet connection, and 4 participants thought they had to spend more to buy data packages, as an effort to be able to take online learning

    Students' motivation in reading test responses washback effect on learning in higher education

    This article reported the result of investigation washback on students learning and motivation along Reading subject as a test for EFL learners. Two main aspects were studied: students’ perception of the exam (attitude, content, methodology, course, and preparation) and student perceived to their motivation. A mixed-methods approach utilized to address the issue. Descriptive and frequency scale used to analyze quantitative data obtained from surveying 120 students. For qualitative, the data analysis elicited from observations of two classes and interviews with 12 students as representatives of four levels. The study found that students expressed positive rather than negative washback to both variables (i.e., learning and motivation) toward the exam. Findings indicated that the subject meets their needs and the test appropriate to measure their achievement goals. However, high-stakes testing still has leftover doubt feeling in preparation. Otherwise, the motivation, which covered content, methodology, and attitude, indicated, there is a positive attitude that affects students’ development, and it brings students to get an optimal point on the test.     Students’ perception toward effective teaching approach used by EFL teacher

    Abstract This research aimed to describe the approach of effective and ineffective teaching approaches used by EFL teacher as perceived by the students. This research was designed using qualitative research. This research applied the purposive sampling technique by considering students’ English Achievement. The subject of this research was the seventy-five students of the secondary school in Maros regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The data was collected through class discussion and focus group discussion. In analyzing the data, the researchers used qualitative data analysis. The results of this research suggest EFL teachers’ use four effective teaching approach used by EFL teacher in the secondary school; they are communicative, cooperative learning, audio-lingual, and simulation and games. The students believed these approaches stimulate the students’ activeness and participation in the classroom. There is three ineffective teaching approach used by EFL teacher in the secondary school; they are lecturing, grammar translation, and direct teaching

    MENGASAH KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA BAHASA INGGRIS MENGGUNAKAN SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS (SGD) PADA SISWA SMP NEGERI 16 KABUPATEN SORONG

    Berbicara merupakan keterampilan yang sangat dibutuhkan dalam mempelajari bahasa. Maka, setiap pembelajar bahasa harus bisa berbicara dengan baik dan benar sesuai dengan struktur tata bahasa yang dipelajari. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengasah keterampilan berbicara siswa  menggunakan small group discussions (SGD). Pengabdian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 16 Kabupaten Sorong  dengan menggunakan metode pendampingan. Peserta yang terlibat dalam pengabdian ini adalah siswa-siswi kelas XI yang berjumlah 25 siswa-siswi dengan 5 instruktur. Dalam pelaksanaan pendampingan, peserta dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok dan setiap kelompok terdiri dari 5 siswa.  Hasil pencapaian peserta adalah 79,5%, dapat dikategorikan biak kemampuan peserta dalam menjawab pertanyaan. Disamping itu, guru yang mengampuh mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris juga turut serta dalam proses pendampingan yang dilakukan kepada siswa-siswi.Berbicara merupakan keterampilan yang sangat dibutuhkan dalam mempelajari bahasa.
