    Using Riddles Technique to Develop Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

    The educational value of applying the riddles technique is to develop students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 1 Sausu. Students’ lack of vocabulary, especially about countable nouns and students’ participation throughout the procedure of instruction in the class are the reasons for carrying out this research. The researchers applied a quasi-experimental research design, includes experimental and control class. In the academic year 2022-2023, students in first grade at SMP Negeri 1 Sausu made up the population, includes the classes VIIA and VIIB. The total number of students were 77 students. The sample class was determined using a cluster sampling technique. The instrument in this research was tests, pre-test and post-test. The researchers come to the conclusion that using riddles technique can develop students’ vocabulary mastery in the first grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sausu. It was evidenced by the experimental class’s post-test results (79.29), that was higher than the control class’s post-test (68.40). Also, the t-counted  score (8.52) was exceeds than the t-table value (1.674)

    This article was based on the readiness of students to face job market in the future, especially considering the competition in getting jobs nowadays will be increasingly stringent. Automatically, the opportunity to get a decent job will be dwindling due to fierce competition of the job seekers. This research aims to (1) Knowing  the ability of Aircraft Maintenance Technology cadets at the Makassar Aviation Polytechnic in answering job interviews through the demonstration method. (2) Knowing the Students’ perception on the application of the demonstration method in answering job interviews. The research conducted in this article was the application of the demonstration method to cadets/students in facing job interviews in the future. This research used a qualitative method in gaining the data. The research activity was carried out in three meetings using observation data and interviews as data collection instruments. Based on the results of the study, it was revealed that the abilities possessed by Aircraft Maintenance Technology cadets at the Makassar Aviation Polytechnic in answering job interviews through demonstration methods, namely the ability to English speaking, writing Curriculum Vitae (CV) and cover letters in English, and controlling themselves during interviews. As for the cadets' perception of the application of the demonstration method collected through interviews, it showed that the material and methods applied were in accordance with the needs of cadets

    Psychoanalysis Ellie Chu Portrayed from Freud's and Maslow's Theories in "The Half of It" Movie

    Psychology is the science that studies human behavior which is applied in analyzing human personality. This journal examines the application of the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud (Id, Ego, and Superego) and Abraham Maslow (physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, self-esteem, and self-actualization) in analyzing Ellie Chu the main character of the film "The Half of It". The author uses the descriptive qualitative research method to explain Ellie Chu's character. The author obtained data from watching the film "The Half of It" which was released by Netflix in 2020 and reading the script for the film "The Half of it". Directed by Alice Wu, this film follows the journey of Ellie Chu, a talented young writer who gets entangled in a journey of finding a complex identity in her small town. This analysis aims to show how the application of Freud's and Maslow's theories provides insight into Ellie's character development and motivation throughout the film. By exploring her subconscious desires and the fulfillment of her needs, we gain a deeper understanding of her actions, decisions, and emotional journey. Understanding the psychological underpinnings of Ellie's character increases our appreciation of the film's themes of identity, love, and self-discovery. It is hoped that from this analysis the readers can also be inspired by the story of Ellie Chu who can take responsibility for truth, honesty, and sacrifice

    The Effectiveness of Offline and Online Classes in Language Learning at Universities Majoring in English Education

    In this contemporary era, technology's influence on education is profound. Online teaching, in addition to traditional offline classes, has become prevalent. This study explores the preferences of 16 English students at the Islamic University of Malang regarding online and offline classes. The research employs a mixed-method approach, analyzing questionnaire data quantitatively and qualitatively. Results indicate a clear preference for offline learning due to its perceived effectiveness, better understanding, and enhanced engagement, mainly attributed to face-to-face interactions with instructors. Consequently, students favor offline classes over online ones

    Mastering Teacher Competencies through Collaborative Multimodal Teaching

    This study explored how student teachers master teacher competencies through collaborative multimodal teaching. In this case, the teaching-learning processes focused on vocabulary. Moreover, it investigated the difficulties encountered by student teachers in mastering teacher competencies through collaborative multimodal teaching. Teacher competencies cover pedagogical, professional, social, and personal (Ministry of National Education, 2007). This study applied qualitative design (multi-case study) involving 45 student teachers studying at three different study programs and 15 model teachers teaching at elementary schools in Cianjur, West Java. Three instruments were employed for the data collection of this study, i.e., observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The results indicate that collaborative multimodal teaching among the model teachers and the student teachers is conducted in five stages, i.e., observing, planning, simulating, practicing, and evaluating. In collaborative multimodal teaching, student teachers and model teachers are involved in groups of teaching using multimodal instructional media (e.g., VR) to apply the pedagogical knowledge and practice multimodal teaching directly in the natural teaching-learning processes

    This study aims at discovering out the students’ perceptions about using Elsa Speak in learning English. Sources of data for this study were 15 junior high school students. In collecting data, the researcher spread the questionnaires by using Google Forms format and the researcher used an interview to support the questionnaire result towards the students’ voice in utilizing Elsa Speak. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. The results show that students have a fairly positive perception towards the use of Elsa Speak in learning English. It indicates that students like the use of Elsa Speak in learning process, they can read the words, phrases, and situational sentence patterns themselves and then be assessed and corrected by ELSA's artificial intelligence, they can find out how much they can pronounce sentences according to native standards. Students also get many advantages with Elsa Speak

    In Japanese Haiku, stylistic writing is a characteristic a poet uses to express thoughts. This research aims to classify the language function of Gijinhou and describe the meaning of Gijinhou contained in Kobayashi Issa's Haiku. The novelty of this research, with previous research, is to examine the Gijinhou Language Style (Personification) in Haiku by Kobayashi Issa. This research used library search techniques to collect data and used descriptive qualitative research techniques.. The data source of this research is Kobayashi Issa's Haiku on the website haikuguy.com/issa/ totaling thirty-five data. This research uses five language functions in Kobayashi Issa's Haiku: emotive, poetic, multilingual, fatigue, and conative.  And the Gijinhou language style is defined as a metaphorical language that connects inanimate items to humans and considers them humans

    The Effect of Using VOA Podcast on Students Intensive Listening Skill

    The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of podcast or VOA podcast in improving the eight grade students English listening skill. This research utilized a sample of 30 students from a class, comprising 13 males and 17 females. Data collection for this research involved the use of measurement techniques, specifically the gap-filling test as the instrument. The collected data was analyzed to assess the impact of podcasts on students' listening skills. The results of the study revealed a significant improvement in students' listening skills with a t-value of 7.131, exceeding the critical value of 2.045 (t-value = 7.131, df=29). This indicated a significant impact of using podcasts in EFL students' listening learning (7.131 > 2.045) with a medium effect size of 0.77. Therefore, the findings suggest that the use of podcasts effectively contributed to the improvement of students' listening skills

    Learning English Vocabulary with Taboo Game: A Case Study of Indonesian Junior High School Students

    Vocabulary serves as the basis for the four language skills. However, for many EFL learners, vocabulary mastery is difficult to achieve. This situation requires English teachers to find and utilize different approaches to help make vocabulary learning more enjoyable yet engaging for their students. This study aimed to elucidate English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' reflections after utilizing the Taboo game for vocabulary learning and to explore their perceptions of its benefits. A qualitative method was used in the current study. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews and questionnaires. This research was carried out at one private junior high school in Medan, Indonesia. Thirty-four second-year students agreed to participate in the study (15 females; 19 males). The results of data analysis through frequency count and Content Analysis revealed that most students were satisfied with learning vocabulary through the Taboo game. Furthermore, in terms of their perceptions, the students reported three benefits (1) Improvement of vocabulary mastery, (2) Enhanced vocabulary recall (3) Higher engagement. In general, the Taboo game was perceived positively by all the student participants. Moreover, the Taboo game assists in learning and understanding materials, making it easier to know and learn new vocabulary and increasing their learning creativity

    Gamification offers various types of learning English, especially oral articulation. Oral articulation or pronunciation is often a big problem in learning English, Therefore the students must be able to speak up with good articulation like a native speaker. One type of gamification is ELSA Speak Application. The study aims to know students’ articulation and students perception of learning English articulation by gamification. This application is used to train students’ oral articulation to match the articulation of native speakers. This study uses qualitative description and the data is taken through observation and interviews. The participant consisted of 20 students in the 9th grade of Junior High School in Medan. Based on the results of the interview, the students admitted that gamification can improve articulation in English. In conclusion, the students have positive experiences in learning English pronunciation or articulation by using gamification. They agree that learning with gamification makes it interesting and fun
