Marital Commitment and Religiosity in a Sample of Adults in Utah
This study examined the relationship of three types of martial commitment and religiosity factors in a random sample of I ,316 Utah adults. Participants were surveyed to assess attitudes of marriage, divorce, and marriage education. A lack of commitment was cited by 83% of divorced adults as a major factor for their divorce. The level of commitment to spouse, commitment to marriage, and constraint commitment was determined by extrapolating items from the 2003 Utah Marriage Movement Statewide Baseline Survey. Religiosity included measures of the frequency of church attendance, church affiliation, and religious values. Regression analyses that included socio-demographics showed the strongest and most consistent predictor of commitment to spouse and commitment to marriage was religious values. This study confirms the distinct difference but strong interplay between the three types of marital commitment. There was a negative relationship between both commitment to spouse and commitment to marriage and constraint commitment. Premarital cohabitation was positively related to constraint commitment but negatively related to commitment to spouse and commitment to marriage. Frequency of church attendance, conservative church affiliation (particularly The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints religion), and religious values were all significant factors related statistically to marital commitment. Study findings suggest that educators and marriage therapists engaged in helping couples can productively focus on marital commitment, the influence of religious activity, and belief systems in strengthening marriage relationships
Brackish Groundwater and Its Potential to Augment Freshwater Supplies

Secure, reliable, and sustainable water resources are fundamental to the Nation’s food production, energy independence, and ecological and human health and well-being. Indications are that at any given time, water resources are under stress in selected parts of the country. The large-scale development of groundwater resources has caused declines in the amount of groundwater in storage and declines in discharges to surface water bodies (Reilly and others, 2008). Water supply in some regions, particularly in arid and semiarid regions, is not adequate to meet demand, and severe drought intensifies the stresses affecting water resources (National Drought Mitigation Center, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, 2015). If these drought conditions continue, water shortages could adversely affect the human condition and threaten environmental flows necessary to maintain ecosystem health.
In support of the national census of water resources, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) completed the national brackish groundwater assessment to provide updated information about brackish groundwater as a potential resource to augment or replace freshwater supplies (Stanton and others, 2017). Study objectives were to consolidate available data into a comprehensive database of brackish groundwater resources in the United States and to produce a summary report highlighting the distribution, physical and chemical characteristics, and use of brackish groundwater resources. This assessment was authorized by section 9507 of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (42 U.S.C. 10367), passed by Congress in March 2009. Before this assessment, the last national brackish groundwater compilation was completed in the mid-1960s (Feth, 1965). Since that time, substantially more hydrologic and geochemical data have been collected and now can be used to improve the understanding of the Nation’s brackish groundwater resources.
Data abstract
Brackish groundwater (BGW), defined for this assessment as having a dissolved-solids concentration between 1,000 and 10,000 milligrams per liter, is an unconventional source of water that may offer a partial solution to current (2016) and future water challenges. In support of the National Water Census, the USGS has completed a BGW assessment to gain a better understanding of the occurrence and characteristics of BGW resources of the United States as an alternative source of water. Analyses completed as part of this assessment relied on previously collected data from multiple sources, and no new data were collected. One of the most important contributions of this assessment was the creation of a database containing chemical data and aquifer information for the known quantities of BGW in the United States. Data were compiled from single publications to large datasets and from local studies to national assessments, and includes chemical data on the concentrations of dissolved solids, major ions, trace elements, nutrients, radionuclides, and physical properties of the resource (pH, temperature, specific conductance). This database represents data from a compilation of water-quality samples from 100,000+ (major-ions data) to 300,000+ (dissolved-solids data) groundwater wells across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. The data are published here as an ESRI geodatabase with a point feature class and associated attribute table, and also as non-proprietary comma-separated value table. It was not possible to compile all data available for the Nation, and data selected for this investigation were mostly limited to larger datasets that were available in a digital format
T Helper 2 Cytokines Inhibit Autophagic Control of Intracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis
SummaryAutophagy is a recently recognized immune effector mechanism against intracellular pathogens. The role of autophagy in innate immunity has been well established, but the extent of its regulation by the adaptive immune response is less well understood. The T helper 1 (Th1) cell cytokine IFN-γ induces autophagy in macrophages to eliminate Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here, we report that Th2 cytokines affect autophagy in macrophages and their ability to control intracellular M. tuberculosis. IL-4 and IL-13 abrogated autophagy and autophagy-mediated killing of intracellular mycobacteria in murine and human macrophages. Inhibition of starvation-induced autophagy by IL-4 and IL-13 was dependent on Akt signaling, whereas the inhibition of IFN-γ-induced autophagy was Akt independent and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) dependent. These findings establish a mechanism through which Th1-Th2 polarization differentially affects the immune control of intracellular pathogens
Pan-genomic perspective on the evolution of the Staphylococcus aureus USA300 epidemic.
Staphylococcus aureus USA300 represents the dominant community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus lineage in the USA, where it is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections. Previous comparative genomic studies have described the population structure and evolution of USA300 based on geographically restricted isolate collections. Here, we investigated the USA300 population by sequencing genomes of a geographically distributed panel of 191 clinical S. aureus isolates belonging to clonal complex 8 (CC8), derived from the Tigecycline Evaluation and Surveillance Trial program. Isolates were collected at 12 healthcare centres across nine USA states in 2004, 2009 or 2010. Reconstruction of evolutionary relationships revealed that CC8 was dominated by USA300 isolates (154/191, 81 %), which were heterogeneous and demonstrated limited phylogeographic clustering. Analysis of the USA300 core genomes revealed an increase in median pairwise SNP distance from 62 to 98 between 2004 and 2010, with a stable pattern of above average dN/dS ratios. The phylogeny of the USA300 population indicated that early diversification events led to the formation of nested clades, which arose through cumulative acquisition of predominantly non-synonymous SNPs in various coding sequences. The accessory genome of USA300 was largely homogenous and consisted of elements previously associated with this lineage. We observed an emergence of SCCmec negative and ACME negative USA300 isolates amongst more recent samples, and an increase in the prevalence of ϕSa5 prophage. Together, the analysed S. aureus USA300 collection revealed an evolving pan-genome through increased core genome heterogeneity and temporal variation in the frequency of certain accessory elements
Nationwide Acute Care Physical Therapist Practice Analysis Identifies Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors That Reflect Acute Care Practice
Background and Purpose. Acute care physical therapists have experienced the effects of dramatic changes in health care reimbursement systems and population demographics. Acute care hospitals now serve a patient population of much older, chronically ill patients who are hospitalized for shorter periods of time in a practice environment in which physical therapy staffing resources are often inadequate. The purposes of this study were to document common experiences in the practice of acute care physical therapy and to identify differences in the perceptions of physical therapists with varying levels of experience and in various sizes of acute care facilities.
Subjects and Methods. A survey questionnaire was mailed to 500 randomly selected physical therapists employed in acute care facilities. The therapists answered questions regarding the frequency of various physical therapy evaluation and treatment practices, problems encountered in delivering physical therapy services, coordination of the discharge planning process, and perceptions of staffing trends in the acute care setting. The responses of 188 physical therapists who completed the survey were compared by their experience levels and the size of the institutions in which they practiced.
Results. Subjects reported that patient factors, such as medical complications and cooperation; organizational factors, such as staffing shortages and large caseloads; and health care system constraints, such as difficulty changing orders and limited time in which to work with the patient interfered with patients reaching physical therapy goals.
Conclusion and Discussion. Inadequate skills for successful acute care practice and maladaptive therapist beliefs about acute care career possibilities may adversely affect physical therapist career longevity in the acute care setting

Prevalence and Correlates of Frailty Among Older Adults Living With HIV in the CHANGE HIV Cohort
Background: Advancements in treatment have resulted in improved survival among people living with HIV. However, additional years of life are not necessarily spent in good health, as frailty tends to develop at a younger age among people living with HIV. We set out to examine the prevalence of frailty and its correlates among older adults living with HIV in Canada, with a primary interest in nadir CD4 count. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the Correlates of Healthy Aging in Geriatric HIV (CHANGE HIV) study, a Canadian cohort of people living with HIV aged 65 years or older. Participants were assessed using the Fried Frailty Phenotype at cohort entry, and those meeting ≥3 criteria were characterized as frail. We used Poisson regression with robust standard errors to estimate the association between nadir CD4 count and frailty, as well as age, gender, time since HIV diagnosis, comorbidities, marital status, and loneliness. Results: Among 439 participants included in this analysis (median age 69 years, interquartile ranges 67-73), prevalence of frailty was 16.6%. Frailty was not associated with nadir CD4 count. Not being in a relationship (aRR 2.09, 95% CI 1.01 to 4.30) and greater degree of loneliness (aRR 1.25 per 10 point increase on UCLA loneliness scale, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.44) were associated with frailty. Conclusions: Frailty occurred in 16.6% of older adults living with HIV in this cohort. While nadir CD4 count did not correlate with frailty, being single and lonely did, highlighting the importance of recognizing and addressing these social vulnerabilities among people aging with HIV
Local field theory for disordered itinerant quantum ferromagnets
An effective field theory is derived that describes the quantum critical
behavior of itinerant ferromagnets in the presence of quenched disorder. In
contrast to previous approaches, all soft modes are kept explicitly. The
resulting effective theory is local and allows for an explicit perturbative
treatment. It is shown that previous suggestions for the critical fixed point
and the critical behavior are recovered under certain assumptions. The validity
of these assumptions is discussed in the light of the existence of two
different time scales. It is shown that, in contrast to previous suggestions,
the correct fixed point action is not Gaussian, and that the previously
proposed critical behavior was correct only up to logarithmic corrections. The
connection with other theories of disordered interacting electrons, and in
particular with the resolution of the runaway flow problem encountered in these

The Hep-CORE policy score: A European hepatitis C national policy implementation ranking based on patient organization data.
BACKGROUND content: New hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatments spurred the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016 to adopt a strategy to eliminate HCV as a public health threat by 2030. To achieve this, key policies must be implemented. In the absence of monitoring mechanisms, this study aims to assess the extent of policy implementation from the perspective of liver patient groups. - Label: METHODS content: "Thirty liver patient organisations, each representing a country, were surveyed in October 2018 to assess implementation of HCV
policies in practice. Respondents received two sets of questions
based on: 1) WHO recommendations; and 2) validated data sources
verifying an existing policy in their country. Academic experts

scores. The similarity scores were calculated for each set with
a multiple joint correspondence analysis. Proxy reference
countries were included as the baseline to contextualize
results. We extracted scores for each country and standardized

Bulgaria had the lowest score whereas five countries (Cyprus,
Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Sweden) had the highest

whether verified policies were in place and second dimension
scores pertained to the proportion of verified policies in-place

Quantum critical behavior in disordered itinerant ferromagnets: Logarithmic corrections to scaling
The quantum critical behavior of disordered itinerant ferromagnets is
determined exactly by solving a recently developed effective field theory. It
is shown that there are logarithmic corrections to a previous calculation of
the critical behavior, and that the exact critical behavior coincides with that
found earlier for a phase transition of undetermined nature in disordered
interacting electron systems. This confirms a previous suggestion that the
unspecified transition should be identified with the ferromagnetic transition.
The behavior of the conductivity, the tunneling density of states, and the
phase and quasiparticle relaxation rates across the ferromagnetic transition is
