Qualitative study in Loop Quantum Cosmology
This work contains a detailed qualitative analysis, in General Relativity and
in Loop Quantum Cosmology, of the dynamics in the associated phase space of a
scalar field minimally coupled with gravity, whose potential mimics the
dynamics of a perfect fluid with a linear Equation of State (EoS). Dealing with
the orbits (solutions) of the system, we will see that there are analytic ones,
which lead to the same dynamics as the perfect fluid, and our goal is to check
their stability, depending on the value of the EoS parameter, i.e., to show
whether the other orbits converge or diverge to these analytic solutions at

Retrieving leaf area index from multi-angular airborne data
This work is aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a methodology for retrieving bio-geophysical variables
whilst at the same time fully accounting for additional information on directional anisotropy. A model-based approach
has been developed to deconvolve the angular reflectance into single landcovers reflectances, attempting
to solve the inconsistencies of 1D models and linear mixture approaches. The model combines the geometric optics
of large scale canopy structure with principles of radiative transfer for volume scattering within individual
crowns. The reliability of the model approach to retrieve LAI has been demonstrated using data from DAISEX-
99 campaign at Barrax, Spain. Airborne data include POLDER and HyMap data in which various field plots
were observed under varying viewing/illumination angles. Nearly simultaneously, a comprehensive field data set
was acquired on specific crop plots. The inversions provided accurate LAI values, revealing the model potential
to combine spectral and directional information to increase the likely accuracy of the retrievals. In addition, the
sensitivity of retrievals with the angular and spectral subset of observations was analysed, showing a high consistency
between results. This study has contributed to assess the uncertainties with products derived from satellite
data like SEVIRI/MSG

In a recent article, Sastry has proposed a quantum mechanics of smeared
particles. We show that the effects induced by the modification of the
Heisenberg algebra, proposed to take into account the delocalization of a
particle defined via its Compton wavelength, are important enough to be

Glacis calcisolico y suelos con horizon cálcico en el NE de la provincia de Granada
[Resumen] La importancia del estudio de las zonas semiáridas parece incuestionable ya que constituyen uno de los ecosistemas más extensos del mundo. España en concreto es el país de Europa que tiene las zonas más extensas y además coinciden con los ambientes socialmente más deprimidos, cuyas características derivan de la aridez ambiental. En el sector nororiental de la provincia de Granada se localiza la Depresión de Baza, definida por un altiplano con una altitud media de 950 metros. La geomorfología queda dibujada por dos conjuntos: alineaciones montañosas y altiplanicie, dando ésta última un paisaje singular que por su extrema sequedad constituye uno de los paisajes más característicos de las zonas esteparias peninsulares. La desigual evolución de los suelos nos permite detallar en el presente trabajo la unidad edafogeomorfológica del glacis calcisólico, desarrollada por denudación de la superficie del glacis lúvico antiguo y la materialización de suelos con horizonte cálcico, originado antiguamente por precipitación del carbonato cálcico ante la desecación del suelo en la estación seca, o petrocálcico 9riginado tras repetidas redisoluciones y reprecipitaciones de la caliza, con fuerte cementación final.[Abstract] Semiarid zones are the vastest ecosystems in the world, therefore their study is very important. Spain is the european country supporting mostly european semiarid zones, moreover these areas are underdeveloped because of their arid environment. The Baza Depresion is located at the north-east of Granada province and is a high plateau with 950m altitude average. Geomorphology is composed for two formations: a mountainous area and a high plateau; this offers a singular landscape making up one of the most characteristics Spanish sttepe. In this study, the calcisolic glacis edaphogeomorphological unit is detailed. This unit is developed by denudation of the old luvic glacis and soils with calcic horizon; this horizon was originated by calcium carbonate precipitation during the dry season, or in the case of petrocalcic horizon, originated by repeated redisolutions and reprecipitations of the calcium carbonate
A sweet deal? Sugarcane, water and agricultural transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa
Globally, the area of sugarcane is rising rapidly in response to growing demands for bioethanol and increased sugar demand for human consumption. Despite considerable diversity in production systems and contexts, sugarcane is a particularly “high impact” crop with significant positive and negative environmental and socio-economic impacts. Our analysis is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which is a critical region for continued expansion, due to its high production potential, low cost of production and proximity, and access, to European markets. Drawing on a systematic review of scientific evidence, combined with information from key informants, stakeholders and a research-industry workshop, we critically assess the impacts of sugarcane development on water, soil and air quality, employment, food security and human health. Our analysis shows that sugarcane production is, in general, neither explicitly good nor bad, sustainable nor unsustainable. The impacts of expansion of sugarcane production on the environment and society depend on the global political economy of sugar, local context, quality of scheme, nature of the production system and farm management. Despite threats from climate change and forthcoming changes in the trade relationship with the European Union, agricultural development policies are driving national and international interest and investment in sugarcane in SSA, with expansion likely to play an important role in sustainable development in the region. Our findings will help guide researchers and policy makers with new insights in understanding the situated environmental and social impacts associated with alternative sugar economy models, production technologies and qualities of management
Valoración naturalística del Corredor Verde del Río Guadiamar Andalucía, España)
En este trabajo aplicamos un método de valoración naturalística, concretamente el índice de interés para la conservación, a cada una de las unidades de un mapa de vegetación previamente realizado a escala 1:10.000. Para el cálculo de los distintos criterios de valoración se tienen en cuenta las comunidades vegetales (asociaciones) presentes en cada unidad, en vez de las especies como suele ser habitual. Las unidades del mapa están agrupadas en series de vegetación, por lo que también pueden extraerse conclusiones sobre el grado de conservación de cada una de ellas. Los resultados se plasman en un mapa de interés para la conservación. El escenario en el que se realizó el trabajo es el corredor verde del río Guadiamar, situado en el sur de España. La zona fue afectada por un vertido tóxico y lo que aquí mostramos son los resultados obtenidos tras una primera limpieza. Después se han iniciado trabajos de restauración, al cabo de los cuales podremos realizar un estudio comparativo con los resultados de este trabajo.In this paper we have applied a naturalistic evaluation strategy, more precisely, the conservation importance index, to each unit of a preplanned 1:10.000scale vegetation map. The estimation of the different evaluation criteria is based on the plant communities (associations) found in each unit rather than on species, as is usual. Since the map units are grouped in vegetation series, the conservation degree of each of them can also be assessed. The results are presented in a conservation interest map. The survey was undertaken in the Green Corridor of the Guadiamar River, in the south of Spain. The area was affected by a toxic spill and our data refl ect the results obtained after the fi rst stage of cleaning work. Subsequently, restoration work has been undertaken after which we will be able to carry out a comparative analysis with the results of this work.Junta de Andalucía. Consejería de Medio Ambiente
Duality and ontology
A ‘duality’ is a formal mapping between the spaces of solutions of two empirically equivalent theories. In recent times, dualities have been found to be pervasive in string theory and quantum field theory. Naïvely interpreted, duality-related theories appear to make very different ontological claims about the world—differing in e.g. space-time structure, fundamental ontology, and mereological structure. In light of this, duality-related theories raise questions familiar from discussions of underdetermination in the philosophy of science: in the presence of dual theories, what is one to say about the ontology of the world? In this paper, we undertake a comprehensive and non-technical survey of the landscape of possible ontological interpretations of duality-related theories. We provide a significantly enriched and clarified taxonomy of options—several of which are novel to the literature
Clinical characterization of patients with anal fistula during follow-up of anorectal abscess: a large population-based study
PurposeApproximately 15-50% of patients with an anorectal abscess will develop an anal fistula, but the true incidence of this entity is currently unknown. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of anorectal abscess and development of a fistula in a specific population area and to identify potential risk factors associated with demographic, socioeconomic and pre-existing disease (e.g. diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease).MethodsA longitudinal observational study was designed including a large cohort study in an area with 7,553,650 inhabitants in Spain 1st january 2014 to 31st december 2019. Adults who attended for the first time with an anorectal abscess and had a minimum of 1-year follow-up were included. The diagnosis was made using ICD-10 codes for anorectal abscess and anal fistula.ResultsDuring the study period, we included 27,821 patients with anorectal abscess. There was a predominance of men (70%) and an overall incidence of 596 per million population. The overall incidence of anal fistula developing from abscesses was 20%, with predominance in men, and a lower incidence in the lowest income level. The cumulative incidence of fistula was higher in men and in younger patients (p < 0.0001). On multivariate analysis, patients aged 60-69 years (hazard ratio 2.0) and those with inflammatory bowel disease (hazard ratio 1.8-2.0) had a strong association with fistula development (hazard ratio 2.0).ConclusionsOne in five patients with an anorectal abscess will develop a fistula, with a higher likelihood in men. Tailoring the Transport Properties of Mesoporous Doped Cerium Oxide for Energy Applications
Hard-template nanocasted mesoporous cerium oxide possesses a unique combination of thermal stability, high surface area, and short diffusion lengths for mass and gas transport, which makes it relevant for high-temperature catalysis, sensing, and electrochemical applications. Here, we present an in-depth study of a number of mesoporous doped ceria systems, and we assess their fundamental structure and functionalities by complementary transmission electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy, electron tomography reconstructions, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We employed surface chemical modifications for increasing the ionic conductivity of as-synthesized mesoporous Gd-doped ceria by 2 orders of magnitude, enabling the ionic pathway across mesoporous particles. Complementary bulk doping strategies (by the addition of Pr) result in the easy tuning of the electrical transport mechanisms converting pure ionic mesoporous ceria into a mixed ionic-electronic conductor. The results obtained here are rationalized in light of local charge accumulation and mobility effects, providing a potential tool for engineering transport properties in nanocasted ceria and similar nanostructured materials for use in energy applications in the form of functional composites, infiltrated structures, or catalytic layers
