    Get PDF
The rapid transformation of Kuala Lumpur conurbation has seen a rise in the demand for private vehicle ownership among commuters, thus leading to an increase in the overall level of congestion within the city center. Towards reducing such issues and focusing on the significance of travel demand management, this study examined the willingness of private vehicle users in using the park and ride facilities. A convenience survey was conducted on 199 respondents through multiple linear regression. It was found that socioeconomic, trip, and technology characteristics have a significant relationship with a willingness to park and ride. The result may assist future transport planners in improving the overall parking management strategies of the city centre. Keywords: Willingness, park and ride, Kuala Lumpur conurbation, regressioneISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. Get PDF
BACKGROUND፡ Malaria is one of the main parasitic diseases and a major health issue in some countries. This study aims to determine the rate and type of infections of Anopheles mosquitoes with malaria parasites using the molecular LAMP method in the Southeastern Iran.METHODS: In this study, 400 Anopheles mosquitoes were collected by the Zahedan Medical Insecticide Center in Nikshahr City, a high-risk area of malaria transmission in Sistan-Baluchestan Province. The mosquitoes were caught manually (by hand) in domestic (humans and animals), natural, and artificial outdoor places (Shelter pits). After DNA extraction, the LAMP method was used, which was compared with Multiplex Nested- PCR as a standard method.RESULTS: Out of 400 samples collected from Nikshahr City, 6 samples (1.5%) were infected with Plasmodium vivax. No Plasmodium falciparum or a mix (Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum) was detected in this study.CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that in places with transmission of both species, i.e. Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, detection of malaria parasites by the LAMP method could be very useful in spotting infections in the field. Thus, molecular epidemiological studies could be conducted annually to monitor malaria in endemic regions. The results of this research show that contamination with mosquito malaria vectors is increasing in Nikshahr City, and it seems that more studies will be required to eliminate malaria until 2026

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube has now become a preferred option for the long-term nutritional support device for patients with dysphagia. There is a considerable debate about the health issues related to the quality of life of these patients. Our aim of the study was to assess the outcome and perspectives of patients/care givers, about the acceptability of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement. Methods: This descriptive analytic study conducted in patients, who have undergone percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement during January 1998 till December 2004. Medical records of these patients were evaluated for their demographic characteristics, underlying diagnosis, indications and complications. Telephonic interviews were conducted till March 2005, on a pre-tested questionnaire to address psychological, social and physical performance status, of the health related quality of life issues. Results: A total of 191 patients\u27 medical records were reviewed, 120 (63%) were males, and mean age was 63 years. Early complication was infection at PEG tube site in 6 (3%) patients. In follow up over 365 +/- 149 days, late complications (occurring 72 hours later) were infection at PEG tube site in 29 (15 %) patient and dislodgment/blockage of the tube in 26 (13.6%). Interviews were possible with 126 patients/caretakers. Karnofsky Performance Score of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 was found in 13(10%), 18(14%), 21(17%), 29(23%) and 45(36%) with p-value \u3c 0.001. Regarding the social and psychological aspects; 76(60%) would like to have the PEG tube again if required, 105(83 %) felt ease in feeding, and 76(60%) felt that PEG-tube helped in prolonging the survival. Regarding negative opinions; 49(39 %) felt that the feeding was too frequent, 45(36 %) felt apprehensive about dependency for feeding and 62(49%) were concerned about an increase in the cost of care. CONCLUSION: PEG-tube placement was found to be relatively free from serious immediate and long- term complications. Majority of caregivers and patient felt that PEG-tube helped in feeding and prolonging the survival. Studies are needed to assess the real benefit in terms of actual nutritional gain and quality of life in such patients

Optimisation of browning index of Maillard reaction in gelatine powder by response surface methodology (RSM) for halal authentication

    Get PDF
Gelatine as the product of collagen extraction from animals is widely used in the food industry. In a glance, the physical properties of gelatine from several sources such as fish, bovine and porcine are similar. Therefore, distinguishing between the sources of gelatine is a tedious task. The differentiation of the gelatine from its sources requires an approach of a chemical reaction. This paper focused on the optimisation of Maillard reaction from different sources of gelatine by Response surface methodology (RSM). The experiment was designed with several imperative parameters; temperature, time and presence of metal ion Cu2+. The response was recorded from the absorbance of reacted gelatine mixture at specific wavenumber (420 nm) through UV-Vis instrumentation. The optimal reaction condition of all type of gelatines in water bath was 95°C for 9 hrs. From solution given, only 5mM concentration of metal ion Cu2+ has an influence on the bovine gelatine compared to fish and porcine gelatine. Maillard reaction with a combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy is one of the convenient protocols for rapid authentication purpose. RSM help to optimize the reaction condition of gelatine from different sources

Impact of export and gross domestic product towards foreign direct investment inflows in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Malaysia has been encouraging Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows not only for its role in technology transfer but also for its economic contribution. Identifying the factors affecting the FDI is important in explaining the Malaysian economy performance. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the impact Of Export (EXP) and economic growth on FDI inflows performance in Malaysia for a period of 30 years from 1979 to 2008 using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). In this paper, the economic growth shall be denoted by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Granger no causality test' or mostly know as Causality Test was used to test the direction of causality between the variables whereas Johansen Cointegration Test was employed to gauge the long run relationship. According to the findings, GDP 'granger cause' FDI runs unidirectionally on a short term basis. Johansen test for determining cointegration showed that the GDP has significant positive long run relationship with FDI inflows. In contrast, there was an inverse relationship between EXP and FDI inflows. Results also show that FDI, EXP and the GDP series in Malaysia are I (1) series. In conclusion, the ability of a country in manipulating its' own resources is significant in generating the economic growth. It is recommended for future researchers to include other economic indicators such as interest rate, exchange rate and inflation rate in explaining additional factors contributing to FDI inflows

Eighteen varieties of Malaysian brown rice were evaluated for their crude protein, total glutamic acid, and gamma amino butyric acid contents after pre-germination at different times. The crude protein and total glutamic acid content increased significantly in all the varieties after pre-germination. Gamma amino butyric acid content increased dramatically with time during the pre-germination process. A significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation was observed between protein, glutamic acid, and gamma amino butyric acid contents before and after pre-germination. The brown rice varieties containing higher glutamic acid and/or protein content before the pre-germination process provided more gamma amino butyric acid content during pre-germination
