IJTC2009-15137 PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION OF THERMAL NANO-ACTUATOR FOR FLY HEIGHT CONTROL IN DISK DRIVES
ABSTRACT Slider with thermal fly height control (TFC) uses a thermal heater to produce localized thermal protrusion and adjust the vertical position of the read/write head. This paper reports authors' efforts in exploring large protrusion stroke with minimal heater power input whilst preserving heater robustness in the TFC slider, with an optimized thermal nano-actuator design. Effects of both heater line width and line spacing on TFC slider performances are investigated. A novel 'StreamRiver' heater design approach is proposed. Simulation results conclude that the "Stream-River" approach is of both high power-protrusion efficiency and high heater robustness

Disturbed temporal dynamics of episodic retrieval activity with preserved spatial activity pattern in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: A simultaneous EEG-fMRI study
Episodic memory (EM) deficit is the core cognitive dysfunction of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, the episodic retrieval pattern detected by functional MRI (fMRI) appears preserved in aMCI subjects. To address this discrepancy, simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG)-fMRI recording was employed to determine whether temporal dynamics of brain episodic retrieval activity were disturbed in patients with aMCI. Twenty-six aMCI and 29 healthy control (HC) subjects completed a word-list memory retrieval task during simultaneous EEG-fMRI. The retrieval success activation pattern was detected with fMRI analysis, and the familiarity- and recollection-related components of episodic retrieval activity were identified using event-related potential (ERP) analysis. The fMRI-constrained ERP analysis explored the temporal dynamics of brain activity in the retrieval success pattern, and the ERP-informed fMRI analysis detected fMRI correlates of the ERP components related to familiarity and recollection processes. The two groups exhibited similar retrieval success patterns in the bilateral posteromedial parietal cortex, the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL), and the left lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC). The fMRI-constrained ERP analysis showed that the aMCI group did not exhibit old/new effects in the IPL and LPFC that were observed in the HC group. In addition, the aMCI group showed disturbed fMRI correlate of ERP recollection component that was associated with inferior EM performance. Therefore, in this study, we identified disturbed temporal dynamics in episodic retrieval activity with a preserved spatial activity pattern in aMCI. Taken together, the simultaneous EEG-fMRI technique demonstrated the potential to identify individuals with a high risk of cognitive deterioration

Mediating Role of the Reward Network in the Relationship between the Dopamine Multilocus Genetic Profile and Depression
Multiple genetic loci in the dopamine (DA) pathway have been associated with depression symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural mechanisms underlying the polygenic effects of the DA pathway on depression remain unclear. We used an imaging genetic approach to investigate the polygenic effects of the DA pathway on the reward network in MDD. Fifty-three patients and 37 cognitively normal (CN) subjects were recruited and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) scans. Multivariate linear regression analysis was employed to measure the effects of disease and multilocus genetic profile scores (MGPS) on the reward network, which was constructed using the nucleus accumbens (NAc) functional connectivity (NAFC) network. DA-MGPS was widely associated within the NAFC network, mainly in the inferior frontal cortex, insula, hypothalamus, superior temporal gyrus, and occipital cortex. The pattern of DA-MGPS effects on the fronto-striatal pathway differed in MDD patients compared with CN subjects. More importantly, NAc-putamen connectivity mediates the association between DA MGPS and anxious depression traits in MDD patients. Our findings suggest that the DA multilocus genetic profile makes a considerable contribution to the reward network and anxious depression in MDD patients. These results expand our understanding of the pathophysiology of polygenic effects underlying brain network abnormalities in MDD
