    Analysis of Weld Induced Distortion of Butt Joint using Simulation and Experimental Study / Mohd Shahar Sulaiman ...[et al.]

    This paper focuses on investigation of welding distortion that occurred due to GMAW process which can adversely affect the dimensional accuracy and aesthetical value of the welded structure. Distortion can lead to production delay and costly remedial work. Based on this fact, it is necessary to predict the welding distortion in advance in order to produce high quality welded parts and thus to reduce production cost. In this study, the welding distortion induced in butt joint with thickness of 4 mm was simulated using Finite Element Method (FEM) software Simufact.Welding Version 5. The welding deformation was computed based on non-linear thermo-elastic-plastic numerical analysis. Low carbon steel material was employed for the simulation and experimental study. A series of experiments using fully automated welding process were carried out for verification purpose in order to measure the distortion. By comparing the results between simulation and experiment, it was found out that a good agreement was achieved and fast solution analysis time was provided in predicting weld induced distortion

    Development of Bead Modelling for Distortion Analysis Induced by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing using FEM and Experiment

    In this research, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing is modelled and simulated to determine the most suitable bead modelling strategy. This analysis is aimed to predict distortion by means of thermomechanical Finite Element Method (FEM). The product model with wire as feedstock on plate as substrate and process simulation are designed in form of multi-layered beads and single string using MSC Marc/Mentat. This research begins with finding suitable WAAM parameters which takes into account the bead quality. This is done by using robotic welding system with 01.2mm filler wire (AWS A5.28 : ER80SNi1), shielding gas (80% Ar/ 20% CO2) and 6mm-thick low carbon steel as base plate. Further, modelling as well as simulation are to be conducted with regards to bead spreading of each layers. Two different geometrical modelling regarding the weld bead are modelled which are arc and rectangular shape. Equivalent material properties from database and previous researches are implemented into simulation to ensure a realistic resemblance. It is shown that bead modelling with rectangular shape exhibits faster computational time with less error percentage on distortion result compared to arc shape. Moreover, by using the rectangular shape, the element and meshing are much easier to be designed rather than arc shape bead

    The effect of functional splinting on mild dysplastic hips after walking onset

    BACKGROUND: For treatment of Graf class IIb dysplastic hips at walking onset a treatment concept with abduction splints allowing patterns as walking and crawling under constant abduction control was investigated. However, as the splint still incapacitates child movements the research question remains whether the physiologically progressing maturation of hips can be significantly altered using such abduction splints for walking children. METHODS: Of 106 children showing late hip dysplasia, 68 children treated with the Hoffman-Daimler (HD-splint) abduction splint were compared with 38 children with neglect of the abduction treatment in this retrospective study. Radiographic analyses were performed measuring the development of the age dependent acetabular angle. RESULTS: The regression analysis for splint treatment showed a significant linear regression for both splint treatment and no splint treatment group (r(2 )= 0,31 respectively r(2 )= 0,33). No statistical difference between both treatment groups was apparent. CONCLUSION: Considering the characteristics of this study, there seems to be no strong rationale supporting the use of an abduction device in growing children. As no significant difference between treatment groups is apparent, a future controlled prospective study on splinting effects can be considered ethically allowed

    The chemical characterization of Nigerian propolis samples and their activity against Trypanosoma brucei.

    Profiling of extracts from twelve propolis samples collected from eight regions in Nigeria was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with evaporative light scattering (ELSD), ultraviolet detection (UV) and mass spectrometry (MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the processed LC-MS data demonstrated the varying chemical composition of the samples. Most of the samples were active against Trypanosoma b.brucei with the highest activity being in the samples from Southern Nigeria. The more active samples were fractionated in order to isolate the component(s) responsible for their activity using medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC). Three xanthones, 1,3,7-trihydroxy-2,8-di-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)xanthone, 1,3,7-trihydroxy-4,8-di-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)xanthone a previously undescribed xanthone and three triterpenes: ambonic acid, mangiferonic acid and a mixture of α-amyrin with mangiferonic acid (1:3) were isolated and characterised by NMR and LC-MS. These compounds all displayed strong inhibitory activity against T.b.brucei but none of them had higher activity than the crude extracts. Partial least squares (PLS) modelling of the anti-trypanosomal activity of the sample extracts using the LC-MS data indicated that high activity in the extracts, as judged from LCMS 2data, could be correlated to denticulatain isomers in the extracts

    Higgs Boson Masses in the Complex NMSSM at One-Loop Level

    The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) with a Higgs sector containing five neutral and two charged Higgs bosons allows for a rich phenomenology. In addition, the plethora of parameters provides many sources of CP violation. In contrast to the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension, CP violation in the Higgs sector is already possible at tree-level. For a reliable understanding and interpretation of the experimental results of the Higgs boson search, and for a proper distinction of Higgs sectors provided by the Standard Model or possible extensions, the Higgs boson masses have to be known as precisely as possible including higher-order corrections. In this paper we calculate the one-loop corrections to the neutral Higgs boson masses in the complex NMSSM in a Feynman diagrammatic approach adopting a mixed renormalization scheme based on on-shell and DRˉ\bar{DR} conditions. We study various scenarios where we allow for tree-level CP-violating phases in the Higgs sector and where we also study radiatively induced CP violation due to a non-vanishing phase of the trilinear coupling AtA_t in the stop sector. The effects on the Higgs boson phenomenology are found to be significant. We furthermore estimate the theoretical error due to unknown higher-order corrections by both varying the renormalization scheme of the top and bottom quark masses and by adopting different renormalization scales. The residual theoretical error can be estimated to about 10%

    Comparative Distortion Analysis of Welded T-Joint between 2D-Shell and 3D-Solid Element using FEA with Experimental Verification / Keval. P Prajadhiana...[et al.]

    In this paper, three different finite element simulations of welded T-Joint are to be computed using 2D-shell and 3D-solid element types. The assigned element types are built and modelled on T-joint plate with thickness of 4 mm. The thermo-mechanical FEM simulation using MSC Marc/Mentat is implemented throughout the analysis. The angular distortion induced by welding process on the web is to be analysed under similar heat input and clamping condition on the stiffener. The selected heat source model is Goldak’s double ellipsoid which is normally used for arc welding processes.In order to verify the simulation process, selected one-pass and double-sided GMAW process with fully automated experimental procedure was conducted using the exactly similar parameters assigned in FEM simulation. A measurement point analysis is furthercarried out to assess the displacement value of the actual T-Joint welding process by using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and to compare with the result of FEM simulation.It is found out that, for this kind of joint design and geometry, conducted FEM procedure shows good agreement on distortion tendency of the web within the range of percentage error up to 20%. However, the element types shell and solid without table do not indicate significant difference in simulation result compared to solid element with table

    Learning and Long-Term Retention of Large-Scale Artificial Languages

    Recovering discrete words from continuous speech is one of the first challenges facing language learners. Infants and adults can make use of the statistical structure of utterances to learn the forms of words from unsegmented input, suggesting that this ability may be useful for bootstrapping language-specific cues to segmentation. It is unknown, however, whether performance shown in small-scale laboratory demonstrations of “statistical learning” can scale up to allow learning of the lexicons of natural languages, which are orders of magnitude larger. Artificial language experiments with adults can be used to test whether the mechanisms of statistical learning are in principle scalable to larger lexicons. We report data from a large-scale learning experiment that demonstrates that adults can learn words from unsegmented input in much larger languages than previously documented and that they retain the words they learn for years. These results suggest that statistical word segmentation could be scalable to the challenges of lexical acquisition in natural language learning.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF DDRIG #0746251

    'Breaking the silence' : sexual victimisation in an old age psychiatry patient population in Flanders

    Background: Sexual violence (SV) is linked to mental health problems in adulthood and old age. However, the extent of sexual victimisation in old age psychiatry patients is unknown. Due to insufficient communication skills in both patients and healthcare workers, assessing SV in old age psychiatry patients is challenging. Methods: Between July 2019 and March 2020, 100 patients at three old age psychiatry wards across Flanders participated in a face-to-face structured interview receiving inpatient treatment. The participation rate was 58%. We applied the WHO definition of SV, encompassing sexual harassment, sexual abuse with physical contact without penetration, and (attempted) rape. Outcomes: In 57% of patients (65% F, 42% M) SV occurred during their lifetime and 7% (6% F, 9% M) experienced SV in the past 12-months. Half of the victims disclosed their SV experience for the first time during the interview. Only two victims had disclosed SV to a mental health care professional before. Interpretation: Sexual victimisation appears to be common in old age psychiatry patients, yet it remains largely undetected. Although victims did reveal SV during a face-to-face interview to a trained interviewer, they do not seem to spontaneously disclose their experiences to mental health care professionals. In order to provide tailored care for older SV victims, professionals urgently need capacity building through training, screening tools and care procedures

    Instability of aquaglyceroporin (Aqp) 2 contributes to drug resistance in trypanosoma brucei

    Defining mode of action is vital for both developing new drugs and predicting potential resistance mechanisms. Sensitivity of African trypanosomes to pentamidine and melarsoprol is predominantly mediated by aquaglyceroporin 2 (TbAQP2), a channel associated with water/glycerol transport. TbAQP2 is expressed at the flagellar pocket membrane and chimerisation with TbAQP3 renders parasites resistant to both drugs. Two models for how TbAQP2 mediates pentamidine sensitivity have emerged; that TbAQP2 mediates pentamidine translocation across the plasma membrane or via binding to TbAQP2, with subsequent endocytosis and presumably transport across the endosomal/lysosomal membrane, but as trafficking and regulation of TbAQPs is uncharacterised this remains unresolved. We demonstrate that TbAQP2 is organised as a high order complex, is ubiquitylated and is transported to the lysosome. Unexpectedly, mutation of potential ubiquitin conjugation sites, i.e. cytoplasmic-oriented lysine residues, reduced folding and tetramerization efficiency and triggered ER retention. Moreover, TbAQP2/TbAQP3 chimerisation, as observed in pentamidine-resistant parasites, also leads to impaired oligomerisation, mislocalisation and increased turnover. These data suggest that TbAQP2 stability is highly sensitive to mutation and that instability contributes towards the emergence of drug resistance

    Comparative genomics of drug resistance in <i>Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense</i>

    Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense is one of the causative agents of human sleeping sickness, a fatal disease that is transmitted by tsetse flies and restricted to Sub-Saharan Africa. Here we investigate two independent lines of T. b. rhodesiense that have been selected with the drugs melarsoprol and pentamidine over the course of 2 years, until they exhibited stable cross-resistance to an unprecedented degree. We apply comparative genomics and transcriptomics to identify the underlying mutations. Only few mutations have become fixed during selection. Three genes were affected by mutations in both lines: the aminopurine transporter AT1, the aquaporin AQP2, and the RNA-binding protein UBP1. The melarsoprol-selected line carried a large deletion including the adenosine transporter gene AT1, whereas the pentamidine-selected line carried a heterozygous point mutation in AT1, G430R, which rendered the transporter non-functional. Both resistant lines had lost AQP2, and both lines carried the same point mutation, R131L, in the RNA-binding motif of UBP1. The finding that concomitant deletion of the known resistance genes AT1 and AQP2 in T. b. brucei failed to phenocopy the high levels of resistance of the T. b. rhodesiense mutants indicated a possible role of UBP1 in melarsoprol-pentamidine cross-resistance. However, homozygous in situ expression of UBP1-Leu(131) in T. b. brucei did not affect the sensitivity to melarsoprol or pentamidine
