    White Matter Degeneration in Huntington's Disease: A Study of Brain Structure and Cognition

    Huntington's disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder characterised by devastating physical, behavioural and mental dysfunction. Accumulating evidence indicates that abnormal white matter (WM) is a major hallmark of the disease, with both macro- and microstructural changes apparent before manifest diagnosis. This thesis is an investigation of WM in HD and uses various imaging and cognitive techniques to address some key challenges. Firstly, the development of reliable structural measurement techniques sensitive to longitudinal change may aid characterisation of subtle abnormalities before disease onset. Secondly, optimised diffusion imaging techniques which incorporate superior image processing tools will further understanding as to why changes are harder to find in the premanifest stage and will increase sensitivity to detect them. Thirdly, the development of novel, hypothesis-driven neuropsychological tasks will help detect heterogeneous cognitive decline in individuals in the earliest disease stages. To address these challenges, firstly, a novel corpus callosum (CC) segmentation technique is developed and applied to a large clinical cohort revealing disease-related reduction in baseline CC volume and elevated rates of change over 24 months in both premanifest and manifest HD participants. Secondly, an investigation of template effects in diffusion image analysis reveals consistency between analyses using three customised templates and evidence of the superiority of tensor-based registration over scalar-based registration is demonstrated. An exploratory investigation into the association between brain volume and WM diffusivity is also presented and disease-specific changes in HD gene-carriers are reported. Lastly, two specially designed, pathology-targeted cognitive tasks are applied to a premanifest HD cohort. Abnormal interhemispheric transfer from the non-dominant to dominant hemisphere as well as altered attentional processing and impaired automaticity is revealed. By developing techniques to characterise WM pathology and explore cognitive deficits, this thesis improves our understanding of the role of WM degeneration in the premanifest and early stages of HD

    Chemical characteristics of air from different source regions during the second Pacific Exploratory Mission in the Tropics (PEM-Tropics B)

    Ten-day backward trajectories are used to determine the origins of air parcels arriving at locations of airborne DC-8 chemical measurements during NASA's second Pacific Exploratory Mission in the Tropics B that was conducted during February-April 1999. Chemical data at sites where the trajectories had a common geographical origin and transport history are grouped together, and statistical measures of chemical characteristics are computed. Temporal changes in potential temperature are used to determine whether trajectories experienced a significant convective influence during the 10-day period. Trajectories describing the aged marine Southern Hemispheric category remain over the South Pacific Ocean during the 10-day period, and their corresponding chemical signature indicates very clean air. The category aged marine air in the Northern Hemisphere is found to be somewhat dirtier. Subdividing its trajectories based on the direction from which the air had traveled is found to be important in explaining the various chemical signatures. Similarly, long-range northern hemispheric trajectories passing over Asia are subdivided depending on whether they had followed a mostly zonal path, had originated near the Indian Ocean, or had originated near Central or South America and subsequently experienced a stratospheric influence. Results show that the chemical signatures of these subcategories are different from each other. The chemical signature of the southern hemispheric long-range transport category apparently exhibits the effects of pollution from Australia, southern Africa, and South America. Parcels originating over Central and northern South America are found to contain the strongest pollution signature of all categories, due to biomass burning and other sources. The convective category exhibits enhanced values of nitrogen species, probably due to emissions from lightning associated with the convection. Values of various species, including peroxides and acids, confirm that parcels were influenced by the removal of soluble gas and particle species due to precipitation. Finally, current results are compared with those from the first PEM-Tropics mission that was conducted in the same region during the southern hemispheric dry season (August-October 1996) when extensive biomass burning occurred. Results show that air samples during PEM-Tropics B are considerably cleaner than those of its dry season counterpart. Copyright 2001 by the American Geophysical Union

    Mental health problems: Are they or are they not a risk factor for dropout from drug treatment? A systematic review of the evidence

    Background: A sizeable number of recent studies investigating whether clients with substance misuse and mental health problems (dual diagnosis clients) are at heightened risk of dropout from drug treatment have been published. It is timely that their findings are brought together in a comprehensive review of the current evidence. Aims: The aim of the review is to examine whether dually diagnosed clients are less likely to be retained in drug treatment than clients without mental health problems, and, if so, whether this varies for clients diagnosed with different types of mental health problems. Methods: The review considers peer-reviewed research published after 1 January 1990, which was located using the literature databases Medline and PsycInfo. Predefined search terms were used. Further papers were identified from the bibliographies of relevant publications. Findings: 58 studies (84% from the USA) met the inclusion criteria for the review. The findings suggest that for most clients, having a past history of mental health problems does not influence the likelihood of being retained in drug treatment. The body of evidence regarding concurrent mental health problems is contradictory. On the whole, the majority of studies suggest that neither presence nor severity of depressive, anxiety, or other Axis-I disorders is related to retention, but these findings are not entirely unequivocal, as a few studies report strong positive or negative associations between depression and anxiety disorders and retention. Few researchers looked separately at psychotic spectrum disorders hence no conclusions could be drawn. The presence of most personality disorders also did not appear to affect treatment tenure, with the exception of antisocial personality disorder, for which the evidence points towards a greater risk of dropout. Conclusions: The balance of evidence suggests that, overall, dual diagnosis clients with Axis-I disorders who seek treatment in drug treatment services are retained as well as clients without dual diagnosis. Subgroups of clients who appear more vulnerable to premature dropout include those with antisocial personality disorder. Methodological shortcomings of the reviewed studies and resulting implications for this review and future research are discussed

    Automated Ortho-Rectification of UAV-Based Hyperspectral Data over an Agricultural Field Using Frame RGB Imagery

    Low-cost Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with consumer-grade imaging systems have emerged as a potential remote sensing platform that could satisfy the needs of a wide range of civilian applications. Among these applications, UAV-based agricultural mapping and monitoring have attracted significant attention from both the research and professional communities. The interest in UAV-based remote sensing for agricultural management is motivated by the need to maximize crop yield. Remote sensing-based crop yield prediction and estimation are primarily based on imaging systems with different spectral coverage and resolution (e.g., RGB and hyperspectral imaging systems). Due to the data volume, RGB imaging is based on frame cameras, while hyperspectral sensors are primarily push-broom scanners. To cope with the limited endurance and payload constraints of low-cost UAVs, the agricultural research and professional communities have to rely on consumer-grade and light-weight sensors. However, the geometric fidelity of derived information from push-broom hyperspectral scanners is quite sensitive to the available position and orientation established through a direct geo-referencing unit onboard the imaging platform (i.e., an integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS). This paper presents an automated framework for the integration of frame RGB images, push-broom hyperspectral scanner data and consumer-grade GNSS/INS navigation data for accurate geometric rectification of the hyperspectral scenes. The approach relies on utilizing the navigation data, together with a modified Speeded-Up Robust Feature (SURF) detector and descriptor, for automating the identification of conjugate features in the RGB and hyperspectral imagery. The SURF modification takes into consideration the available direct geo-referencing information to improve the reliability of the matching procedure in the presence of repetitive texture within a mechanized agricultural field. Identified features are then used to improve the geometric fidelity of the previously ortho-rectified hyperspectral data. Experimental results from two real datasets show that the geometric rectification of the hyperspectral data was improved by almost one order of magnitude

    Atomic and Molecular Interstellar Absorption Lines toward the High Galactic Latitude Stars HD 141569 and HD 157841 at Ultra-High Resolution

    We present ultra-high-resolution (0.32 km s-1) spectra obtained with the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and Ultra-High-Resolution Facility (UHRF) of interstellar Na I D1, Na I D2, Ca II K, K I, and CH absorption toward two high Galactic latitude stars HD 141569 and HD 157841. We have compared our data with 21 cm observations obtained from the Leiden/Dwingeloo H I survey. We derive the velocity structure and column densities of the clouds represented by the various components and identify the clouds with ISM structures seen in the region at other wavelengths. We further derive abundances, linear depletions, and H2 fractional abundances for these clouds wherever possible. Both stars are located in regions of IRAS 100 μm emission associated with high Galactic latitude molecular clouds (HLCs): HD 141569 lies, in projection, close to MBM 37 and the Lynds dark cloud L134N, whereas HD 157841 is in the vicinity of the MBM 151. Toward HD 141569 we detect two components in our UHRF spectra: a weak, broad b = 4.5 km s-1 component at -15 km s-1, seen only in Ca II K absorption, and another component at 0 km s-1, seen in Na I D1, Na I D2, Ca II K, K I, and CH absorption. The cloud represented by the -15 km s-1 component is warm and may be located in a region close to the star. The cloud represented by the 0 km s-1 component has a Ca linear depletion δ(Ca) = 1.4 × 10-4 and shows evidence for the presence of dust, consistent with strong 100 μm emission seen in this region. The H2 fractional abundance f(H2) derived for this cloud is 0.4, which is typically what is observed toward HLCs. We conclude that this 0 km s-1 cloud is associated with MBM 37 and L134N based on the presence of dust and molecular gas (CH) and good velocity agreement with CO emission from these two clouds. This places HD 141569 beyond MBM 37 and L134N, which are estimated to be at ≈ 110 pc. In the case of the HD 157841 sight line, a total of six components are seen on our UHRF spectra in Na I D1, Na I D2, Ca II K, K I, and CH absorption. Two of these six components are seen only in a single species. The cloud represented by the components at 1.85 km s-1 has a Ca linear depletion δ(Ca) = 2.8 × 10-4, indicating the presence of dust. The f(H2) derived for this cloud is 0.45, and there is good velocity agreement with CO emission from MBM 151. To the best of our knowledge, this 1.85 km s-1 component toward HD 157841 is the first one found to have relative line widths that are consistent with pure thermal broadening only. We associate the 1.85 km s-1 cloud seen in our UHRF spectra with MBM 151 and conclude that HD 157841 must lie beyond ~200 pc, the estimated distance to MBM 151

    Western oceanus procellarum as seen by c1xs on chandrayaan-1

    We present the analysis of an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) observation of the western part of Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon’s nearside made by the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer on 10th February 2009. Through forward modelling of the X-ray spectra, we provide estimates of the MgO/SiO2 and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for seven regions along the flare’s ground track. These results are combined with FeO and TiO2 contents derived from Clementine multispectral reflectance data in order to investigate the compositional diversity of this region of the Moon. The ground track observed consists mainly of low-Ti basaltic units, and the XRF data are largely consistent with this expectation. However, we obtain higher Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for these units than for most basalts in the Apollo sample collection. The widest compositional variation between the different lava flows is in wt% FeO content. A footprint that occurs in a predominantly highland region, immediately to the north of Oceanus Procellarum, has a composition that is consistent with mixing between low-Ti mare basaltic and more feldspathic regoliths. In contrast to some previous studies, we find no evidence for systematic differences in surface composition, as determined through X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques
