Von Bezold assimilation effect reverses in stereoscopic conditions
Lightness contrast and lightness assimilation are opposite phenomena: in contrast,
grey targets appear darker when bordering bright surfaces (inducers) rather than dark ones; in
assimilation, the opposite occurs. The question is: which visual process favours the occurrence
of one phenomenon over the other? Researchers provided three answers to this question. The
first asserts that both phenomena are caused by peripheral processes; the second attributes their
occurrence to central processes; and the third claims that contrast involves central processes,
whilst assimilation involves peripheral ones. To test these hypotheses, an experiment on an IT
system equipped with goggles for stereo vision was run. Observers were asked to evaluate the
lightness of a grey target, and two variables were systematically manipulated: (i) the apparent
distance of the inducers; and (ii) brightness of the inducers. The retinal stimulation was kept
constant throughout, so that the peripheral processes remained the same. The results show that
the lightness of the target depends on both variables. As the retinal stimulation was kept constant, we
conclude that central mechanisms are involved in both lightness contrast and lightness assimilation
Provably scale-covariant networks from oriented quasi quadrature measures in cascade
This article presents a continuous model for hierarchical networks based on a
combination of mathematically derived models of receptive fields and
biologically inspired computations. Based on a functional model of complex
cells in terms of an oriented quasi quadrature combination of first- and
second-order directional Gaussian derivatives, we couple such primitive
computations in cascade over combinatorial expansions over image orientations.
Scale-space properties of the computational primitives are analysed and it is
shown that the resulting representation allows for provable scale and rotation
covariance. A prototype application to texture analysis is developed and it is
demonstrated that a simplified mean-reduced representation of the resulting

The Biological Basis of a Universal Constraint on Color Naming: Cone Contrasts and the Two-Way Categorization of Colors
Many studies have provided evidence for the existence of universal constraints on color categorization or naming in various languages, but the biological basis of these constraints is unknown. A recent study of the pattern of color categorization across numerous languages has suggested that these patterns tend to avoid straddling a region in color space at or near the border between the English composite categories of “warm” and “cool”. This fault line in color space represents a fundamental constraint on color naming. Here we report that the two-way categorization along the fault line is correlated with the sign of the L- versus M-cone contrast of a stimulus color. Moreover, we found that the sign of the L-M cone contrast also accounted for the two-way clustering of the spatially distributed neural responses in small regions of the macaque primary visual cortex, visualized with optical imaging. These small regions correspond to the hue maps, where our previous study found a spatially organized representation of stimulus hue. Altogether, these results establish a direct link between a universal constraint on color naming and the cone-specific information that is represented in the primate early visual system

A grounded theory of female adolescents' dating experiences and factors influencing safety: the dynamics of the Circle
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper describes the nature and characteristics of the dating relationships of adolescent females, including any of their experiences of abuse.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A grounded theory approach was used with 22 theoretically sampled female adolescents ages 15–18.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Several important themes emerged: Seven stages of dating consistently described the relationships of female adolescents. A circle consisting of two interacting same sex peer groups provided structure for each teen as they navigated the dating course. The circle was the central factor affecting a female adolescent's potential for risk or harm in dating relationships. Teens defined abuse as an act where the intention is to hurt. Having once succumbed to sexual pressure, teens felt unable to refuse sex in subsequent situations.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>An awareness of both the stages of dating and the dynamics of the circle will assist health care providers to plan and implement interventions in the female adolescent population. Study findings on factors and influences that support non-abusive versus abusive relationship might help identify female teens at risk and/or support interventions aimed at preventing dating violence.</p
Systematic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography for deep vein thrombosis
Background
Ultrasound (US) has largely replaced contrast venography as the definitive diagnostic test for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We aimed to derive a definitive estimate of the diagnostic accuracy of US for clinically suspected DVT and identify study-level factors that might predict accuracy.
Methods
We undertook a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of diagnostic cohort studies that compared US to contrast venography in patients with suspected DVT. We searched Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Database of Reviews of Effectiveness, the ACP Journal Club, and citation lists (1966 to April 2004). Random effects meta-analysis was used to derive pooled estimates of sensitivity and specificity. Random effects meta-regression was used to identify study-level covariates that predicted diagnostic performance.
Results
We identified 100 cohorts comparing US to venography in patients with suspected DVT. Overall sensitivity for proximal DVT (95% confidence interval) was 94.2% (93.2 to 95.0), for distal DVT was 63.5% (59.8 to 67.0), and specificity was 93.8% (93.1 to 94.4). Duplex US had pooled sensitivity of 96.5% (95.1 to 97.6) for proximal DVT, 71.2% (64.6 to 77.2) for distal DVT and specificity of 94.0% (92.8 to 95.1). Triplex US had pooled sensitivity of 96.4% (94.4 to 97.1%) for proximal DVT, 75.2% (67.7 to 81.6) for distal DVT and specificity of 94.3% (92.5 to 95.8). Compression US alone had pooled sensitivity of 93.8 % (92.0 to 95.3%) for proximal DVT, 56.8% (49.0 to 66.4) for distal DVT and specificity of 97.8% (97.0 to 98.4). Sensitivity was higher in more recently published studies and in cohorts with higher prevalence of DVT and more proximal DVT, and was lower in cohorts that reported interpretation by a radiologist. Specificity was higher in cohorts that excluded patients with previous DVT. No studies were identified that compared repeat US to venography in all patients. Repeat US appears to have a positive yield of 1.3%, with 89% of these being confirmed by venography.
Conclusion
Combined colour-doppler US techniques have optimal sensitivity, while compression US has optimal specificity for DVT. However, all estimates are subject to substantial unexplained heterogeneity. The role of repeat scanning is very uncertain and based upon limited data
Relational color constancy in achromatic and isoluminant images
Relational color constancy, which refers to the constancy of perceived relations between surface colors under
changes in illuminant, may be based on the computation of spatial ratios of cone excitations. As this activity
need occur only within rather than between cone pathways, relational color constancy might be assumed to be
based on relative luminance processing. This hypothesis was tested in a psychophysical experiment in which
observers viewed simulated images of Mondrian patterns undergoing colorimetric changes that could be attributed
either to an illuminant change or to a nonilluminant change; the images were isoluminant, achromatic,
or unmodified. Observers reliably discriminated the two types of changes in all three conditions, implying
that relational color constancy is not based on luminance cues alone. A computer simulation showed
that in these isoluminant and achromatic images spatial ratios of cone excitations and of combinations of cone
excitations were almost invariant under illuminant changes and that discrimination performance could be predicted
