Formation of Black Holes from Collapsed Cosmic String Loops

The fraction of cosmic string loops which collapse to form black holes is estimated using a set of realistic loops generated by loop fragmentation. The smallest radius sphere into which each cosmic string loop may fit is obtained by monitoring the loop through one period of oscillation. For a loop with invariant length $L$ which contracts to within a sphere of radius $R$, the minimum mass-per-unit length $\mu_{\rm min}$ necessary for the cosmic string loop to form a black hole according to the hoop conjecture is $\mu_{\rm min} = R /(2 G L)$. Analyzing $25,576$ loops, we obtain the empirical estimate $f_{\rm BH} = 10^{4.9\pm 0.2} (G\mu)^{4.1 \pm 0.1}$ for the fraction of cosmic string loops which collapse to form black holes as a function of the mass-per-unit length $\mu$ in the range $10^{-3} \lesssim G\mu \lesssim 3 \times 10^{-2}$. We use this power law to extrapolate to $G\mu \sim 10^{-6}$, obtaining the fraction $f_{\rm BH}$ of physically interesting cosmic string loops which collapse to form black holes within one oscillation period of formation. Comparing this fraction with the observational bounds on a population of evaporating black holes, we obtain the limit $G\mu \le 3.1 (\pm 0.7) \times 10^{-6}$ on the cosmic string mass-per-unit-length. Study of guidance techniques for aerial application of agricultural compounds

Candidate systems were identified for evaluation of suitability in meeting specified accuracy requirements for a swath guidance system in an agriculture aircraft. Further examination reduced the list of potential candidates to a single category, i.e., transponder type systems, for detailed evaluation. Within this category three systems were found which met the basic accuracy requirements of the work statement. The Flying Flagman, the Electronic Flagging and the Raydist Director System. In addition to evaluating the systems against the specified requirements, each system was compared with the other two systems on a relative basis. The conclusions supported by the analyses show the Flying Flagman system to be the most suitable system currently available to meet the requirements

The Circumstellar Extinction of Planetary Nebulae

We analyze the dependence of circumstellar extinction on core mass for the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds and M31. We show that in all three galaxies, a statistically significant correlation exists between the two quantities, such that high core mass objects have greater extinction. We model this behavior, and show that the relation is a simple consequence of the greater mass loss and faster evolution times of high mass stars. The relation is important because it provides a natural explanation for the invariance of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) with population age: bright Population I PNe are extinguished below the cutoff of the PNLF. Climate change and public health situations in the coastal areas of Bangladesh

This study aims to investigate the population health of climate change affected people in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The relationship between climate change and health lacks clarity in the existing literature. This study uses data collected from the area affected by cyclone Sidr in 2009. Results show that climate change triggered natural disasters such as Sidr can is affect the physical and mental health of this population. The prevalence of diarrhoea, skin diseases, dengue fever, hepatitis (jaundice) and other infectious diseases has increased after the natural disaster. The risk of injury and death also increased during the time of natural disaster. Children and older adults are the most vulnerable groups facing serious health problems including mental health. The majority of the health professionals, service providers and local community of coastal areas are more aware of the health impacts of climate change, yet their knowledge is limited regarding health protection measures

Climate change impact: the experience of the coastal areas of Bangladesh affected by cyclones Sidr and Aila

Bangladesh is considered one of the countries most at risk to the effects of climate change and its coastal area is most vulnerable. This study tries to explore the experiences of cyclones Sidr and Aila affected people living in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. This study was conducted in the cyclone Sidr affected Amtali Upazila of Barguna District and in the cyclone Aila affected Koyra Upazila of Khulna District. Primary data collection was done using Focus Group Interview and then a thematic analysis approach was used for analysis. Three core themes emerged from the analysis and they are, firstly, impacts of climate change on the socioeconomic condition of the people, secondly, the impact on the health status of the population, and finally the impact on vulnerable people. Findings show that the effects of climate change have serious consequences on the livelihood patterns of the affected population and on their overall health status. As a result, the unfavorable health condition of these affected people makes them more vulnerable to various emerging diseases
