The views and practice of oncologists towards nutritional support in patients receiving chemotherapy
Malnutrition in patients with cancer is common and an adverse prognostic indicator. A questionnaire answered by 357 (72%) UK specialist oncological trainees suggests that they lack the ability to identify factors that place patients at risk from malnutrition. Major barriers to effective nutritional practice included lack of guidelines, knowledge and time
Lifetime of 19Ne*(4.03 MeV)
The Doppler-shift attenuation method was applied to measure the lifetime of
the 4.03 MeV state in 19Ne. Utilizing a 3He-implanted Au foil as a target, the
state was populated using the 20Ne(3He,alpha)19Ne reaction in inverse
kinematics at a 20Ne beam energy of 34 MeV. De-excitation gamma rays were
detected in coincidence with alpha particles. At the 1 sigma level, the
lifetime was determined to be 11 +4, -3 fs and at the 95.45% confidence level
the lifetime is 11 +8, -7 fs.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Intruder bands and configuration mixing in the lead isotopes
A three-configuration mixing calculation is performed in the context of the
interacting boson model with the aim to describe recently observed collective
bands built on low-lying states in neutron-deficient lead isotopes. The
configurations that are included correspond to the regular, spherical states as
well as two-particle two-hole and four-particle four-hole excitations across
the Z=82 shell gap.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PRC, reference added for section 1

Role of Multichance Fission in the Description of Fission-Fragment Mass Distributions at High Energies
Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for U237-240, Np239-242, and Pu241-244 populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multinucleon transfer channels in the reaction O18+U238 at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency tandem facility. Among them, the data for U240 and Np240,241,242 were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multichance fission
Early onset of ground-state deformation in the neutron-deficient polonium isotopes
In-source resonant ionization laser spectroscopy of the even- polonium
isotopes Po has been performed using the
to ( nm) transition in the polonium atom
(Po-I) at the CERN ISOLDE facility. The comparison of the measured isotope
shifts in Po with a previous data set allows to test for the first
time recent large-scale atomic calculations that are essential to extract the
changes in the mean-square charge radius of the atomic nucleus. When going to
lighter masses, a surprisingly large and early departure from sphericity is
observed, which is only partly reproduced by Beyond Mean Field calculations.Comment: As submitted to PR
Fission fragments mass distributions of nuclei populated by the multinucleon transfer channels of the 18O + 232Th reaction
It is shown that the multinucleon transfer reactions is a powerful tool to study fission of exotic neutron-rich actinide nuclei, which cannot be accessed by particle-capture or heavy-ion fusion reactions. In this work, multinucleon transfer channels of the 18O + 232Th reaction are used to study fission of fourteen nuclei 231,232,233,234Th, 232,233,234,235,236Pa, and 234,235,236,237,238U. Identification of fissioning nuclei and of their excitation energy is performed on an event-by-event basis, through the measurement of outgoing ejectile particle in coincidence with fission fragments. Fission fragment mass distributions are measured for each transfer channel, in selected bins of excitation energy. In particular, the mass distributions of 231,234Th and 234,235,236Pa are measured for the first time. Predominantly asymmetric fission is observed at low excitation energies for all studied cases, with a gradual increase of the symmetric mode towards higher excitation energy. The experimental distributions are found to be in general agreement with predictions of the fluctuation–dissipation model
On inconsistency of experimental data on primary nuclei spectra with sea level muon intensity measurements
For the first time a complete set of the most recent direct data on primary
cosmic ray spectra is used as input into calculations of muon flux at sea level
in wide energy range GeV. Computations have been performed
with the CORSIKA/QGSJET and CORSIKA/VENUS codes. The comparison of the obtained
muon intensity with the data of muon experiments shows, that measurements of
primary nuclei spectra conform to sea level muon data only up to several tens
of GeV and result in essential deficit of muons at higher energies. As it
follows from our examination, uncertainties in muon flux measurements and in
the description of nuclear cascades development are not suitable to explain
this contradiction, and the only remaining factor, leading to this situation,
is underestimation of primary light nuclei fluxes. We have considered
systematic effects, that may distort the results of the primary cosmic ray
measurements with the application of the emulsion chambers. We suggest, that
re-examination of these measurements is required with the employment of
different hadronic interaction models. Also, in our point of view, it is
necessary to perform estimates of possible influence of the fact, that sizable
fraction of events, identified as protons, actually are antiprotons. Study of
these cosmic ray component begins to attract much attention, but today nothing
definite is known for the energies GeV. In any case, to realize whether
the mentioned, or some other reasons are the sources of disagreement of the
data on primaries with the data on muons, the indicated effects should be
thoroughly analyzed
De-excitation of the strongly coupled band in 177Au and implications for core intruder configurations in the light Hg isotopes
Excited states in the proton-unbound nuclide 177Au were populated in the 92Mo(88Sr, p2n) reaction and identified using the Jurogam-II and GREAT spectrometers in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator at the University of Jyväskylä Accelerator Laboratory. A strongly coupled band and its decay path to the 11/2− α-decaying isomer have been identified using recoil-decay tagging. Comparisons with cranked HartreeFock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations based on Skyrme energy functionals suggest that the band has a prolate deformation and is based upon coupling the odd 1h11/2 proton hole to the excited 0+ 2 configuration in the 178Hg core. Although these configurations might be expected to follow the parabolic trend of core Hg(0+2 ) states as a function of neutron number, the electromagnetic decay paths from the strongly coupled band in 177Au are markedly different from those observed in the heavier isotopes above the midshell. This indicates that a significant change in the structure of the underlying A+1Hg core occurs below the neutron midshell
