Factorization of weakly continuous holomorphic mappings
We prove a basic property of continuous multilinear mappings between
topological vector spaces, from which we derive an easy proof of the fact that
a multilinear mapping (and a polynomial) between topological vector spaces is
weakly continuous on weakly bounded sets if and only if it is weakly {\it
uniformly\/} continuous on weakly bounded sets. This result was obtained in
1983 by Aron, Herv\'es and Valdivia for polynomials between Banach spaces, and
it also holds if the weak topology is replaced by a coarser one. However, we
show that it need not be true for a stronger topology, thus answering a
question raised by Aron. As an application of the first result, we prove that a
holomorphic mapping between complex Banach spaces is weakly uniformly
continuous on bounded subsets if and only if it admits a factorization of the
form , where is a compact operator and a holomorphic
mapping
Calidad de Vida: An Exploratory Investigation of Latino Breast Cancer Survivors and Intimate Partners
Advances in addressing psychosocial issues related to cancer treatment and prevention are not reaching all survivors equally. Latina breast cancer survivors and intimate partners are underrepresented in psychosocial interventions, and there is a scarcity of research on the influence of cancer on Latino couples’ quality of life. The purpose of this manuscript is to present findings from a trans-linguistic, dyadic qualitative research study aimed at exploring the influence of cancer on quality of life for Latina breast cancer survivors and their intimate partners. Results highlight several areas that are helpful and hindering to supporting survivorship
The Spanish translation of Matilde Serao's book Ella non rispose,
by Dulce Maria Loynaz, published in Cuba on 2013 and the introductory
study made by the Cuban researcher Zaida Capote are the axes that motivate
the following essay. The main purpose of this goes around Loynaz’s
translation: the possible motivations that determined the choice of that book,
such as some stylistic peculiarities present in the translating exercise and
assessments of the “influence” of the Italian novel in Jardi
Topological first-order solitons in a gauged model with the Maxwell-Chern-Simons action
We verify the existence of radially symmetric first-order solitons in a
gauged scenario in which the dynamics of the Abelian gauge field is
controlled by the Maxwell-Chern-Simons action. We implement the standard
Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) formalism, from which we obtain a
well-defined lower bound for the corresponding energy (i.e. the Bogomol'nyi
bound) and the first-order equations saturating it. We solve these first-order
equations numerically by means of the finite-difference scheme, therefore
obtaining regular solutions of the effective model, their energy being
quantized according the winding number rotulating the final configurations, as
expected. We depict the numerical solutions, whilst commenting on the main
properties they engender.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
TMbarrier: speculative barriers using hardware transactional memory
Barrier is a very common synchronization method used in parallel programming. Barriers are used typically to enforce a partial thread execution order, since there may be dependences between code sections before and after the barrier. This work proposes TMbarrier, a new design of a barrier intended to be used in transactional applications. TMbarrier allows threads to continue executing speculatively after the barrier assuming that there are not dependences with safe threads that have not yet reached the barrier. Our design leverages transactional memory (TM) (specifically, the implementation offered by the IBM POWER8 processor) to hold the speculative updates and to detect possible conflicts between speculative and safe threads. Despite the limitations of the best-effort hardware TM implementation present in current processors, experiments show a reduction in wasted time due to synchronization compared to standard barriers.Universidad de Málaga. Digital literacy in early childhood
Galaxy Formation in the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter Cosmology
In this thesis I explore the effects of the various physical processes behind
galaxy formation and evolution in hierarchical cosmologies by using
semi-analytical modelling. I use the Durham semi-analytical model GALFORM.
I first test the GALFORM model predictions
using observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). I use two
different variants of the model, Baugh et al (2005), which assumes a top-heavy
initial mass function (IMF) in starbursts and superwind feedback, and Bower et
al (2006), which incorporates AGN feedback with a standard IMF. I compare the
luminosity function, colours, sizes and morphology distributions of present-day
galaxies in the models and with the SDSS. The Bower et al model
better reproduces the shape of the luminosity function, the
morphology-luminosity relation and the colour bimodality observed in the SDSS
data. The Baugh et al model is much more successful at predicting
galaxy sizes for late-type galaxies. Both models have problems with
the sizes of early-type galaxies, which are predicted to be too large
for low luminosities and too small for high luminosities compared to SDSS. I
tested the impact on the model predictions of varying the prescriptions for
supernova feedback, disk instabilities and galaxy mergers.
In the second part of the thesis I explore the connection between two high
redshift star-forming galaxy populations and present-day galaxies and
their contribution to the star formation history. I built galaxy merger trees
and followed the evolution and properties of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and
Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) using the Baugh et al (2005) model.
The model predicts that the descendants of SMGs (S_{nu} > 5 mJy) have a median stellar mass of ~10e11/h solar masses, and that
more than 70% of these descendants are bulge-dominated.
More than 50% of present-day galaxies with stellar masses larger
than 7 x 10e11/h solar masses are predicted to be descendants of such
SMGs. Somewhat controversially, the stellar mass produced in the
submillimetre phase contributes only 0.2% of the total present-day
stellar mass, and 2% of the stellar mass of SMG descendants. The descendants of
z=3 LBGs are predicted to have a median stellar
mass equal to that of the Milky Way (M = 4 x 10e10/h solar masses), while the descendants of z=6 LBGs
are predicted to have a larger median stellar mass (M = 10e11/h solar masses). The model predicts that only one in every 16 and one in
every 50 Milky Way mass galaxies have a Lyman-break galaxy progenitor at z=3
and z=6 respectively
