Active learning in learning communities: toward an autonomous and shared learning

    Get PDF
Starting with our work on organizational redesign in different Colombian organizations, we have advanced in the concepts of Learning Communities, Shared and Permanent Learning, Flexible Organizational Structure, Participative Design, among others ideas. These concepts are a fundamental part of the TESO (Systems Theory in Organizations) approach developed and implemented by Ernesto Lleras in different Participative Organization Redesign processes. From this approach we attempt to tackle organizational issues taking into account the cultural background of domination inherited from our Colombian colonial tradition, which we consider to be detrimental to the effectiveness of Colombian organizations. Through the TESO approach we aim to promote an organizational learning focused on two main elements: the strengthening of people's autonomy and responsibility capabilities, and in this way enable the emergence of autonomous and flexible organizational structures. We consider that the strengthening of both organizational and personal capabilities will enable the emergence of a permanent and shared learning environment that is what we call ‘Learning Community’.Peer Reviewe

Clothing consumption practice and its impact on the transformation of “public space”. Vía primavera, El Poblado, Medellín

[EN] Vía Primavera is a fashion district in El Poblado neighbourhood that has become a public referent of city life in Medellin – Colombia, a space that is shown as inclusive and accessible to all types of collectives. This paper is part of a research which purpose is to understand the connection between the public space with its moral and physical organization and the exclusion processes that the clothing conspicuous consumption generates in Via Primavera. The analysis of this connection is subjected to a mutual play between prior structure and agency and the crystallization, or not, of its existence through an interrelation. In the same way, a concern about the city models resumed in the national and local development plans, and its relevance as the ones that set the social and economic ideal of public spaces arises. An ideal that contradicts with practice, where exclusion processes through consumption practices bring a tension in what is supposed to be public, breaking with its inclusive and collective characterGutierrez, D.; Uribe, N. OBJECTIVE: We explore the association between occupational physical activity (OPA) and cardiovascular risk factors in four cities of the Southern Cone. METHODS: Robust multivariable linear regression models were used to examine the associations. RESULTS: The working population was constituted by 1868 men and 1672 women. Men performing high levels of OPA showed higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL; mean adj. diff. = 2.24 mg/dL; P = 0.004), lower levels of triglycerides (-24.59 mg/dL; P = 0.006), and total cholesterol (TC)/HDL ratio values (-0.21; P = 0.015) than reference. Women in the highest category of OPA had higher levels of HDL (2.85 mg/dL; P = 0.006), lower TC/HDL (0.27; P = 0.001), and low-density lipoprotein/HDL ratios (-0.18; P = 0.003) than sedentary activities. CONCLUSION: Individuals who performed high levels of OPA did not exhibit a worse cardiovascular risk profile and an improvement on selected biomarkers was observed when compared with those performing sedentary activities.Fil: Poggio, Rosana. Get PDF
Nowadays, scientific and political communities are focused on ways to better preserve and manage the natural resources of our planet. In order to reduce consumption of fossil resources, and to develop more environmentally friendly industrial processes, the industry of flavors and fragrances became interested in developing new bio-based encapsulating materials. In the present work, maltodextrins have been chosen as main component of the matrix, and pea protein isolate and a modified starch were selected as compatibilizing additives. The incorporation of volatile odorant compounds and the elaboration of the new bio-based delivery systems were performed, all in one single step, by low temperature twin-screw extrusion. The physicochemical, thermal and morphological properties of these matrices were studied, as well as the encapsulation efficiency and the release profile of the active compounds. These investigations have led to a better understanding of the impact of the formulations and of the incorporation of the active compound on the process parameters. The interactions between the wall and the encapsulated materials were also analyzed. The characteristics of the new bio-based delivery systems and the established extrusion process conditions were found to be very promising to be employed in the field of perfumery

Temperature responsiveness of gilthead sea bream bone; an in vitro and in vivo approach

    Get PDF
This study aimed to characterize the molecules involved in osteogenesis in seabream and establish using in vitro/in vivo approaches the responsiveness of selected key genes to temperature. The impact of a temperature drop from 23 to 13 degrees C was evaluated in juvenile fish thermally imprinted during embryogenesis. Both, in vitro/in vivo, Fib1a, appeared important in the first stages of bone formation, and Col1A1, ON and OP, in regulating matrix production and mineralization. OCN mRNA levels were up-regulated in the final larval stages when mineralization was more intense. Moreover, temperature-dependent differential gene expression was observed, with lower transcript levels in the larvae at 18 degrees C relative to those at 22 degrees C, suggesting bone formation was enhanced in the latter group. Results revealed that thermal imprinting affected the long-term regulation of osteogenesis. Specifically, juveniles under the low and low-to-high-temperature regimes had reduced levels of OCN when challenged, indicative of impaired bone development. In contrast, gene expression in fish from the high and high-to-low-temperature treatments was unchanged, suggesting imprinting may have a protective effect. Overall, the present study revealed that thermal imprinting modulates bone development in seabream larvae, and demonstrated the utility of the in vitro MSC culture as a reliable tool to investigate fish osteogenesis."Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad" (MINECO) [BES-2015-074654]; Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) [SFRH/BPD/111512/2015, SFRH/BD/81625/2011]; MINECO, Spain [AGL2010-17324, AGL2014-57974-R]; "Generalitat de Catalunya" (XRAq); Generalitat de Catalunya [2014SGR-01371]; FCT, Portugal [CCMAR/Multi/04326/2013]; European Union [LIFECYCLE EU-FP7 222719]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
A mangrove ecosystem offers different opportunities for symbiosis between various elements of nature and with people. In Peru, “El Santuario Nacional Los Manglares de Tumbes” sanctuary and protected area as well as its adjacent zones that share the same type of ecosystem are the only mangrove in the entire country. Therefore, its enhancement is significant, and the opportunity to create a space that promotes its conservation. The project seeks to represent and respond to this demand and thus generate a positive impact according to the place’s requirements concerning existing threats and with the joint participation of the government areas in charge of the preservation of Protected Natural Areas. The visitor center gathers the spaces required to set a collective participation between the different users who seek to care for the mangrove and those who can learn about the importance of protecting it. Education about this biosphere is vital to avoid its predation and knowing the opportunities provided from the appreciation of nature from a tourist point of view to its capability to be a high biological production system. The project is located with spaces arranged to maintain a constant connection with the natural environment and promote an integrated circuit between nature and information.Tesi

Non-adjacent anti Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers as Intrinsic Probes of Non-B Form Secondary Structures of DNA

    Get PDF
G-quadruplexes are four-stranded structures of DNA composed of G-quartets that have been proposed to play an extremely important role in replication, transcription, and translation. It has, however, been extremely difficult to unequivocally demonstrate that G-quadruplexes form in living cells due to the lack of probes that would allow for their unambiguous detection and location without disrupting the DNA or the cellular environment. To circumvent these problems, it was proposed that DNA itself could be used as an intrinsic photoprobe for certain classes of G-quadruplex structures and other non-B DNA conformations in vivo. Recently, we discovered that UVB irradiation of human telomeric DNA and various other G-quadruplex forming sequences found in human promoters, as well as reverse Hoogsteen hairpins, results in a unique class of non-adjacent anti cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). In this thesis, we explore the proposal that anti CPD formation could be used as an intrinsic photoprobe for certain classes of G-quadruplex structures and other non-B DNA conformations in vivo. The idea would be to use a pulse of UVB light to irreversibly trap the non-B DNA structures via anti CPD formation without perturbing the dynamics of the DNA or the cell in the process, after which the anti CPDs could be mapped to provide unambiguous evidence for the formation and location of these structures in vivoAs a first step towards this goal, we report the development of radioactive post- and pre-labeling assays for the detection of nonadjacent photoproducts and show its ability to detect the trans, anti T=T CPD that forms in human telomeric DNA. We do so by making use of the enzyme snake venom phosphodiesterase (SVP) to degrade the trans,anti-CPD to a tetramer (pT)pT=(pT)pT, that after dephosphorylation with calf intestinal phosphodiesterase and rephosphorylation with kinase and [32P]-ATP produces a fragment of DNA that can be analyzed by high resolution gel electrophoresis with a fmol lower limit of detection. In the pre-labeling assay, radiolabeled phosphates are introduced into anti T=T CPD forming sites by ligation of 5’-end-labeled oligodeoxynucleotides and only require treatment with SVP. We also demonstrate that the assays can detect the stereoisomeric cis, anti T=T CPD. To determine the scope and limitations of the post-labeling assay method to detect non-adjacent CPDs, we use it to investigate the photochemistry of a number of biologically relevant non-B secondary structures. We report the detection of non-adjacent CPDs under conditions that were previously determined by the NP1-MS assay to produce these photoproducts in insignificant amounts, as well as in structures not expected to form anti CPDs. We show that photoreversal of the CPDs with 254 nm light can be used distinguish DNA photocrosslinked by non-adjacent CPDs from non-photoreversible DNA photoproducts and from partially degraded DNA. We show that the post-labeling assay can be used to corroborate and complement enzyme-coupled mass spectrometry assays resulting in a more complete understanding of the photoreactivity of non-B secondary structures
