    The assignment brief

Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier Ltd.This paper reports on the results of a pilot study conducted in The School of Engineering and Design at Brunel University, which considered how easily students could extract ‘meaningful’ information from an assignment brief. The study used two documents, a ‘standard’ module specific assignment brief (PB1), which used a proforma document issued by the Taught Programmes Office (TPO) and a ‘redesigned’ assessment brief (RB2), which also used the ‘basic’ proforma document as the design template. Both documents used the same data but the redesigned version used principles of Information Architecture to structure the data. The study used a designed questionnaire to elicit responses from students at Level 2, which compared and contrasted the two documents

    Vibrotactile pedals : provision of haptic feedback to support economical driving

    The use of haptic feedback is currently an underused modality in the driving environment, especially with respect to vehicle manufacturers. This exploratory study evaluates the effects of a vibrotactile (or haptic) accelerator pedal on car driving performance and perceived workload using a driving simulator. A stimulus was triggered when the driver exceeded a 50% throttle threshold, past which is deemed excessive for economical driving. Results showed significant decreases in mean acceleration values, and maximum and excess throttle use when the haptic pedal was active as compared to a baseline condition. As well as the positive changes to driver behaviour, subjective workload decreased when driving with the haptic pedal as compared to when drivers were simply asked to drive economically. The literature suggests that the haptic processing channel offers a largely untapped resource in the driving environment, and could provide information without overloading the other attentional resource pools used in driving

    Sensing Senses: Tactile Feedback for the Prevention of Decubitus Ulcers

    Decubitus ulcers, also known as pressure sores, is a major problem in health care, in particular for patients with spinal cord injuries. These patients cannot feel the discomfort that would urge healthy people to change their posture. We describe a system that uses a sensor mat to detect problematic postures and provides tactile feedback to the user. The results of our preliminary study with healthy subjects show that the tactile feedback is a viable option to spoken feedback. We envision the system being used for rehabilitation games, but also for everyday Decubitus ulcers prevention

    Open data from the third observing run of LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA and GEO

    The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in April of 2019 and lasting six months, O3b starting in November of 2019 and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in April of 2020 and lasting 2 weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. The main dataset, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure

    Search for Eccentric Black Hole Coalescences during the Third Observing Run of LIGO and Virgo

    Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass M>70M>70 M⊙M_\odot) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities 0<e≀0.30 < e \leq 0.3 at 0.330.33 Gpc−3^{-3} yr−1^{-1} at 90\% confidence level.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Passengers' anxiety about using the London Underground

    As the recognition of public transport system as a service is growing, the importance of customer satisfaction through enhancing customer experience has drawn more attention. Safety and comfort are mentioned as important aspects of public transport user experience. It is believed that customers' experience is influenced by affective factors experienced through contacts with organisations, such as stress and well-being. In this exploratory study, anxiety as psychological stress, as a response to potential threat, is investigated in the United Kingdom's London Underground transport service environments. A questionnaire was designed, developed and administrated to test if negative situations and events faced during the journey induce anxiety. 81 respondents including 43 females and 38 males participated in the study, and the results demonstrated that the main triggers of anxiety were identified as seeing other passengers' anti-social behaviour, overcrowding, too much noise and late-night travel. Gender differences in the respondents were also reported on. It is hoped that this study gives insights to stakeholders for improving service environments by the enhancement of customer experiences, through considering the perceptions of anxiety on anticipated future risks about negative situations where passengers' safety needs might arise
