    Exclusive Breastfeeding and Developmental and Behavioral Status in Early Childhood

    Breastfeeding during infancy may have beneficial effects on various developmental outcomes in childhood. In this study, exclusively breastfed infants were randomly assigned to receive complementary foods from the age of 4 months in addition to breast milk (CF, n = 60), or to exclusively breastfeed to 6 months (EBF, n = 59). At 18 months and again at 30–35 months of age, the children were evaluated with the Parent’s Evaluation of Developmental Status questionnaire (PEDS) and the Brigance Screens-II. The parents completed the PEDS questionnaire at both time intervals and the children underwent the Brigance Screens-II at 30–35 months. At 30–35 months, no significant differences were seen in developmental scores from the Brigance screening test (p = 0.82). However, at 30–35 months a smaller percentage of parents in group CF (2%) had concerns about their children’s gross motor development compared to those in group EBF (19%; p = 0.01), which remained significant when adjusted for differences in pre-randomization characteristics (p = 0.03). No sustained effect of a longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding was seen on selected measures of developmental and behavioral status at 18 months, although at 30–35 months, a smaller percentage of parents of children introduced to complementary foods at four months of age expressed concerns about their gross motor development

    Radioactive 57Mn isotopes have been implanted into Si1 − x Ge x crystals (x ≤ 0.1) at elevated temperatures for Mössbauer studies of the diffusion of interstitial 57Fe daughter atoms. The atomic jump frequency is found to increase upon Ge alloying. This is attributed to a lowering of the activation energy, i.e. the saddle point energy at hexagonal interstitial sites with Ge neighbour atom

    The effect on the small bowel of 5-FU and oxaliplatin in combination with radiation using a microcolony survival assay

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In locally advanced rectal cancer, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)-based chemoradiation is the standard treatment. The main acute toxicity of this treatment is enteritis. Due to its potential radiosensitizing properties, oxaliplatin has recently been incorporated in many clinical chemoradiation protocols. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent 5-FU and oxaliplatin influence the radiation (RT) induced small bowel mucosal damage when given in conjunction with single or split dose RT.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Immune competent balb-c mice were treated with varying doses of 5-FU, oxaliplatin (given intraperitoneally) and total body RT, alone or in different combinations in a series of experiments. The small bowel damage was studied by a microcolony survival assay. The treatment effect was evaluated using the inverse of the slope (D<sub>0</sub>) of the exponential part of the dose-response curve.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In two separate experiments the dose-response relations were determined for single doses of RT alone, yielding D<sub>0 </sub>values of 2.79 Gy (95% CI: 2.65 - 2.95) and 2.98 Gy (2.66 - 3.39), for doses in the intervals of 5-17 Gy and 5-10 Gy, respectively. Equitoxic low doses (IC5) of the two drugs in combination with RT caused a decrease in jejunal crypt count with significantly lower D<sub>0</sub>: 2.30 Gy (2.10 - 2.56) for RT+5-FU and 2.27 Gy (2.08 - 2.49) for RT+oxaliplatin. Adding both drugs to RT did not further decrease D<sub>0</sub>: 2.28 Gy (1.97 - 2.71) for RT+5-FU+oxaliplatin. A clearly higher crypt survival was noted for split course radiation (3 × 2.5 Gy) compared to a single fraction of 7.5 Gy. The same difference was seen when 5-FU and/or oxaliplatin were added.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Combining 5-FU or oxaliplatin with RT lead to an increase in mucosal damage as compared to RT alone in our experimental setting. No additional reduction of jejunal crypt counts was noted when both drugs were combined with single dose RT. The higher crypt survival with split dose radiation indicates a substantial recovery between radiation fractions. This mucosal-sparing effect achieved by fractionation was maintained also when chemotherapy was added.</p

    Investigating harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) population differentiation using RAD-tag genotyping by sequencing

    The population status of the harbor porpoise ( Phocoena phocoena ) in the Baltic Sea and adjacent regions is still not fully resolved. Here, we present a pilot study using the double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq) genotyping- by -sequencing method on specimens from the Baltic Sea, eastern North Sea, Spain and the Black Sea. From a single Illumina lane and a set of 49 individuals, w e obtained around 6000 SNPs. We used these markers to estimate population structure and differentiation, and identified splits between porpoises from the North Sea and the Baltic, and within regions in the Baltic Sea (between the Belt Sea and the Inner Baltic Sea). The SNP analysis confirms population structure elucidated by previous mtDNA/microsatellite studies. We demonstrate the feasibility of SNP analysis on opportunistically sampled cetacean samples, with varying DNA quality, for population diversity and divergence analysis

    Fibre optic absorbance meter with low limit of detection for waterborne cations

    We report an evanescent wave based fibre optic absorbance meter that enables the colorimetric detection of waterborne cations with water insoluble chromoionophoric sensitisers. This establishes an alternative to the PVC membrane based transducers that are conventionally used for this purpose. Here, a water insoluble sensitiser is coated as a thin film on an unclad section of a multimode optical fibre to overlap with the evanescent field of a light beam propagating along the fibre core. The colorimetric response of the sensitiser when in contact with waterborne cation leads to increased absorption of virtual photons associated with the evanescent field. The resulting intensity loss of the propagating beam is detected by a bespoke newly designed self- referenced evanescent wave absorbance meter with beam intensity modulation and Lock-in amplification. We validate our transducer with the well characterised water insoluble sensitizer, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN), for the detection of aqueous Zn2+ cations. We find a limit of detection (LoD) of 54 nM Zn2+, 28 times lower compared to a PVC membrane based sensor using same sensitiser for same cation (Albero et al., Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis 29 (2002), 779). Our evanescent wave absorbance meter can easily be adapted to other colorimetric sensitisers, including chromoionophoric complex forming macrocycles

    The chemistry and saturation states of subsurface fluids during the in situ mineralisation of CO2 and H2S at the CarbFix site in SW-Iceland

    In situ carbonation of basaltic rocks could provide a long-term carbon storage solution, which is essential for the success and public acceptance of carbon storage. To demonstrate the viability of this carbon storage solution, 175 tonnes (t) of pure CO2 and 73 tonnes (t) of a 75% CO2-24% H2S-1% H2-gas mixture were sequentially injected into basaltic rocks at the CarbFix site at Hellisheidi, SW-Iceland from January to August 2012. This paper reports the chemistry and saturation states with respect to potential secondary minerals of sub-surface fluids sampled prior to, during, and after the injections. All gases were dissolved in water during their injection into permeable basalts located at 500–800 m depth with temperatures ranging from 20 to 50 °C. A pH decrease and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) increase was observed in the first monitoring well, HN-04, about two weeks after each injection began. At storage reservoir target depth, this diverted monitoring well is located ∼125 m downstream from the injection well. A significant increase in H2S concentration, however, was not observed after the second injection. Sampled fluids from the HN-04 well show a rapid increase in Ca, Mg, and Fe concentration during the injections with a gradual decline in the following months. Calculations indicate that the sampled fluids are saturated with respect to siderite about four weeks after the injections began, and these fluids attained calcite saturation about three months after each injection. Pyrite is supersaturated prior to and during the mixed gas injection and in the following months. In July 2013, the HN-04 fluid sampling pump broke down due to calcite precipitation, verifying the carbonation of the injected CO2. Mass balance calculations, based on the recovery of non-reactive tracers co-injected into the subsurface together with the acid-gases, confirm that more than 95% of the CO2 injected into the subsurface was mineralised within a year, and essentially all of the injected H2S was mineralised within four months of its injection. These results demonstrate the viability of the in situ mineralisation of these gases in basaltic rocks as a long-term and safe storage solution for CO2 and H2S
