    Relative effectiveness of several simulated jet engine noise spectral treatments in reducing annoyance in a TV-viewing situation

    An experiment was conducted in order to determine the relative effectiveness of several hypothetical jet engine noise treatments and to test hypothesis that speech interference, at least in part, mediates annoyance in a TV-viewing situation. Twenty-four subjects watched television in a simulated living room. Recorded jet flyover noises were presented in such a way as to create the illusion that aircraft were actually flying overhead. There were 27 stimuli (nine spectra at three overall levels) presented at an average rate of approximately one flight every 2 minutes. Subjects judged the annoyance value of individual stimuli using either a category rating method or magnitude estimation method in each of two 1-hour sessions. The spectral treatments most effective in reducing annoyance were at 1.6 Khz and 800 Hz, in that order. The degree of annoyance reduction resulting from all treatments was affected by the overall sound level of the stimuli, with the greatest reduction at the intermediate overall sound level, about 88 to 89 db(A), peak value. The results are interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that speech interference, at least in part, mediates annoyance with aircraft noise in a TV-viewing situation

During the session, they were exposed to a series of recorded aircraft sounds at the rate of one flight every 2 minutes. Within each session, four levels of flyover noise, separated by dB increments, were presented several times in a Latin Square balanced sequence. The peak level of the noisiest flyover in any session was fixed at 95, 90, 85, 75, or 70 dBA. At the end of the test session, subjects recorded their responses to the aircraft sounds, using a bipolar scale which covered the range from very pleasant to extremely annoying. Responses to aircraft noises were found to be significantly affected by the particular activity in which the subjects were engaged. Not all subjects found the aircraft sounds to be annoying

D. is a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award holder.Light sheet microscopy has seen a resurgence as it facilitates rapid, high contrast, volumetric imaging with minimal sample exposure. Initially developed for imaging scattered light, this application of light sheet microscopy has largely been overlooked but provides an endogenous contrast mechanism which can complement fluorescence imaging and requires very little or no modification to an existing light sheet fluorescence microscope. Fluorescence imaging and scattered light imaging differ in terms of image formation. In the former the detected light is incoherent and weak whereas in the latter the coherence properties of the illumination source, typically a laser, dictate the coherence of detected light, but both are dependent on the quality of the illuminating light sheet. Image formation in both schemes can be understood as the convolution of the light sheet with the specimen distribution. In this paper we explore wavefront shaping for the enhancement of light sheet microscopy with scattered light. We show experimental verification of this result, demonstrating the use of the propagation invariant Bessel beam to extend the field of view of a high resolution scattered light, light sheet microscope and its application to imaging of biological super-cellular structures with sub-cellular resolution. Additionally, complementary scattering and fluorescence imaging is used to characterize the enhancement, and to develop a deeper understanding of the differences of image formation between contrast mechanisms in light sheet microscopy.Publisher PD

    Winners and losers from Johne’s disease eradication from the Scottish dairy herd: a Markov-Chain simulation

    In this paper, we evaluated the welfare effects of a hypothetical programme of Johne's disease eradication from the Scottish dairy herd on different stakeholders in the domestic milk market. We undertook the evaluation using a Markov-Chain simulation and applying an economic welfare analysis which takes into consideration the effects of an eradication programme on product price, on output quantity, on cost and on milk yield for given levels of supply and demand elasticities. We found that, following the eradication of the disease, milk yield per cow increased for all herd sizes in Scotland whereas price and unit cost of milk production fell. Consequently, milk consumers gained around ÂŁ14.3 million in discounted economic surplus and producers with infected herds around ÂŁ13.4 million whereas producers with uninfected herds lost around ÂŁ10.7 million in discounted surplus. The gain in surplus made by consumers and owners of infected herds, however, more than made up for the loss in surplus made by owners of un-infected herds.     Strongly nonlinear transport through Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor multiquantum wells occurs due to the interplay between confinement, Coulomb and exchange interaction. Nonlinear effects include the appearance of spin polarized stationary states and self-sustained current oscillations as possible stable states of the nanostructure, depending on its configuration and control parameters such as voltage bias and level splitting due to an external magnetic field. Oscillatory regions grow in size with well number and level splitting. A systematic analysis of the charge and spin response to voltage and magnetic field switching of II-VI Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor multiquantum wells is carried out. The description of stationary and time-periodic spin polarized states, the transitions between them and the responses to voltage or magnetic field switching have great importance due to the potential implementation of spintronic devices based on these nanostructures.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Revtex, to appear in PR

    Combined Reconstruction and Registration of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis

    Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has the potential to en- hance breast cancer detection by reducing the confounding e ect of su- perimposed tissue associated with conventional mammography. In addi- tion the increased volumetric information should enable temporal datasets to be more accurately compared, a task that radiologists routinely apply to conventional mammograms to detect the changes associated with ma- lignancy. In this paper we address the problem of comparing DBT data by combining reconstruction of a pair of temporal volumes with their reg- istration. Using a simple test object, and DBT simulations from in vivo breast compressions imaged using MRI, we demonstrate that this com- bined reconstruction and registration approach produces improvements in both the reconstructed volumes and the estimated transformation pa- rameters when compared to performing the tasks sequentially

    The evolution of clustering and bias in the galaxy distribution

    This paper reviews the measurements of galaxy correlations at high redshifts, and discusses how these may be understood in models of hierarchical gravitational collapse. The clustering of galaxies at redshift one is much weaker than at present, and this is consistent with the rate of growth of structure expected in an open universe. If Ω=1\Omega=1, this observation would imply that bias increases at high redshift, in conflict with observed M/LM/L values for known high-zz clusters. At redshift 3, the population of Lyman-limit galaxies displays clustering which is of similar amplitude to that seen today. This is most naturally understood if the Lyman-limit population is a set of rare recently-formed objects. Knowing both the clustering and the abundance of these objects, it is possible to deduce empirically the fluctuation spectrum required on scales which cannot be measured today owing to gravitational nonlinearities. Of existing physical models for the fluctuation spectrum, the results are most closely matched by a low-density spatially flat universe. This conclusion is reinforced by an empirical analysis of CMB anisotropies, in which the present-day fluctuation spectrum is forced to have the observed form.
