    The last border for servitization

AbstractThe search for flexibility in the new product development (NPD) entails an increasing need for integration of services and products (servitization). Hence, companies aim at maximizing the customer perceived value, which may demand new capabilities development, besides marketing, engineering and manufacturing. This paper suggests that the ‘customer service’ functional area has a central role in this context, since it deals with customers’ problems in a front-end position, and its knowledge can help other functional areas to develop required capabilities for servitization. Moreover, the level of knowledge transfer (KT) among different functional areas is also proposed as an essential activity to improve the servitization process. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate the moderator role of both the customer service area and the KT activities in the impact of the NPD related functional areas on servitization performance. For this purpose, the paper presents a cross-industry survey with 83 Brazilian companies, analyzed by means of an Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. Results show that the last border to transcend the servitization barriers in NPD is the integration of the customer service area to the other main functional areas of NPD. Moreover, our findings indicate which areas are the most critical ones in order to address an intensive KT activity to enhance the servitization performance

Lean production myths: an exploratory study

Tthis paper presents an exploratory investigation of myths on lean production (LP), by identifying, dispelling, and assessing their pervasiveness. A list of myths was proposed mostly based on seminal LP texts and our rich experience from researching, teaching, and consulting in lean journeys. Complexity thinking was adopted as a lens for dispelling the myths, as it challenged generalizations implied in myths. An investigation of the pervasiveness of the myths was conducted, based on a survey with 120 academics and practitioners. Ten myths were identified and dispelled. Survey’s results indicated that belief in lean myths was more common among less experienced practitioners (< 10 years), while experience was not a relevant factor for academics. The lean myths partly reflect the experience of the authors. Furthermore, a larger sample size is necessary for a full analysis of pervasiveness. The lean myths might be underlying barriers to LP implementation (e.g., lack of knowledge of managers and workers), and they might be proactively accounted for in lean training and education programs. This is the first work to explicitly frame a set of lean myths

The moderating role of just-in-time on sociotechnical practices' effect over quality and workers' health

Sociotechnical (ST) theory emphasizes the notion that the design and performance of new systems can be improved, and can only work satisfactorily within an organization if the social and the technical aspects are brought together and treated as interdependent aspects of a work system. The implementation of lean manufacturing (LM) principles and practices has become popular, despite increasing demand on the current and emerging workforce to achieve higher levels of quality and flexibility with lower costs. Exploratory studies that investigate how LM practices influence the effect of ST practices on performance are still scarce, and a holistic view of such a relationship is needed. In this context, this study aims at verifying the moderating effect of just-in-time (JIT) practices on the relationship between ST practices and the performance of quality and workers' health. We carried out a survey with 144 different companies from Southern Brazil that are undergoing a lean implementation. Results indicate that ST practices have a positive significant relationship with such performance, and the concurrent adoption of JIT does not undermine quality and workers' health

A systematic literature review on the stochastic analysis of value streams

Value stream analysis is a very useful approach in the identification of non-value adding wastes and developing a systemic plan for achieving process improvement. However, traditional value stream mapping fails in considering the inherent variability of processes, hence reinforcing improvements that might not lead to significant results. In this sense, the uncertainties associated with value streams become an issue that can be curbed with the integration of stochastic methods. By conducting a systematic literature review, this research evaluates the level of integration of stochastic methods into value stream analysis and identifies those stochastic methods that are widely adopted to address uncertainties in the value stream analysis. Results from the review indicate that the application of the existing stochastic methods into value stream analysis is still at its infancy and is not systematically integrated. In addition, the few studies that consider stochasticity of value streams weakly examines the effect that uncertainty sources entail on each other
