    International audienceThree-dimensional structures of proteins are the support of their biological functions. Their folds are maintained by inter-residue interactions which are one of the main focuses to understand the mechanisms of protein folding and stability. Furthermore, protein structures can be composed of single or multiple functional domains that can fold and function independently. Hence, dividing a protein into domains is useful for obtaining an accurate structure and function determination. In previous studies, we enlightened protein contact properties according to different definitions and developed a novel methodology named Protein Peeling. Within protein structures, Protein Peeling characterizes small successive compact units along the sequence called protein units (PUs). The cutting done by Protein Peeling maximizes the number of contacts within the PUs and minimizes the number of contacts between them. This method is so a relevant tool in the context of the protein folding research and particularly regarding the hierarchical model proposed by George Rose. Here, we accurately analyze the PUs at different levels of cutting, using a non-redundant protein databank. Distribution of PU sizes, number of PUs or their accessibility are screened to determine their common and different features. Moreover, we highlight the preferential amino acid interactions inside and between PUs. Our results show that PUs are clearly an intermediate level between secondary structures and protein structural domains

    International audienceThis paper deals with classification of remote sensing data to extract objects for industrial mapping. While land-cover or urban mapping have been extensively studied, industrial cartography remains a field yet to explore, in spite of tremendous needs. We present and compare here four approaches for railway detection in very high resolution images. They use various kind of filtering approaches, including the trained filters of fully convolutional networks. Moreover, they benefit from different a-priori and post-processing techniques to make them more robust. We evaluate all approaches on a challenging dataset captured on an operating station site with complex objects

    Money for writing: Screenplay development and screenwriters earnings in French cinema

    The funds allocated to developing screenplays currently constitute on average 2 to 3% of the overall budget of a film in France. Producers are more than ever dependent on presenting attractive draft screenplays to find their financial partners. As a result, screenwriters undoubtedly are active economic partners of production planning, but they do not seem to receive much professional recognition for this vital role. Moreover, their earnings often fail to reflect the amount of work produced and do not reward adequately the risks taken, including the possibility that production could stop after the screenplay is written. This article investigates the place of screenplay development within the economics of French cinema. Using recently published official reports and interviews, the author identifies different types of screenwriters – freestanding screenwriters, writing teams and screenwriters co-writing with the director – and addresses their working conditions. She surveys some of the contract modalities for the remuneration of professional screenwriters. Finally, she reviews the proposals made by different professional bodies to improve the remuneration of screenwriters and reform the financing of screenwriting

    The Banana Genome Hub: a community database for genomics in the Musaceae

    The Banana Genome Hub provides centralized access for genome assemblies, annotations, and the extensive related omics resources available for bananas and banana relatives. A series of tools and unique interfaces are implemented to harness the potential of genomics in bananas, leveraging the power of comparative analysis, while recognizing the differences between datasets. Besides effective genomic tools like BLAST and the JBrowse genome browser, additional interfaces enable advanced gene search and gene family analyses including multiple alignments and phylogenies. A synteny viewer enables the comparison of genome structures between chromosome-scale assemblies. Interfaces for differential expression analyses, metabolic pathways and GO enrichment were also added. A catalogue of variants spanning the banana diversity is made available for exploration, filtering, and export to a wide variety of software. Furthermore, we implemented new ways to graphically explore gene presence-absence in pangenomes as well as genome ancestry mosaics for cultivated bananas. Besides, to guide the community in future sequencing efforts, we provide recommendations for nomenclature of locus tags and a curated list of public genomic resources (assemblies, resequencing, high density genotyping) and upcoming resources—planned, ongoing or not yet public.     The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit: a consolidated design for the system requirement review of the preliminary definition phase

    The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained.
