Il potere dell'architettura. L'ideologia di regime all'Esposizione Internazionale di Parigi 1937

    Get PDF

Figure of merit for nonlinear materials in second-order cascaded nonstationary processes

In this paper, we present and discuss an extension and an improvement of the Figure of Merit (FoM) that we introduced in a previous paper. The FoM describes the effectiveness of the frequency doubling materials for ultrashort light pulse modulators via second-order cascaded effects. In the present work, as an input pulse we use a temporal Gaussian pulse so that our perturbative method allows an analytical expression even for the output pulse field after the second pass inside the crystal. For the first time together with the completely analytical expression for the second pass, we report also the exact numerical coefficients for the peak phase modulation. With the FoM it is possible to choose the more appropriate nonlinear material and the use of the cascaded interaction process. Finally, we present for the first time the FoM dependence from the wavelength in the interval 0.5–1 μm, and to a table already shown we added more nonlinear materials

Seeing the invisible: convection cells revealed with thermal imaging

Fluid instabilities are ubiquitous phenomena of great theoretical and applied importance. In particular, an intriguing example is the thermocapillary or B\'enard-Marangoni instability which occurs when a thin horizontal fluid layer, whose top surface is free, is heated from below. In this phenomenon, after passing a certain temperature difference threshold, the fluid develops a regular pattern, usually hexagonal, of convection cells known as B\'enard convection. In general this pattern is not visible to the naked eye unless specific tracers are incorporated into the fluid. The use of thermal imaging is a simple alternative not only for directly observing these phenomenon but also for obtaining valuable quantitative information, such as the relationship between the critical wavelength and the depth of the fluid layer. Here, we propose an experiment specially suited for laboratory courses in fluid mechanics or nonlinear physics that involves the use of thermal cameras. or smartphone accessories, to study B\'enard convection.Comment: 8 pages, 6 fig

Expositions are not autonomous or homogeneous events, on the contrary, their development constitutes the plot of a discontinuous history, the mirror of a society in evolution that experiences its rules and its paradigms, showing them to the society. Through cartography and specific bibliography, in addition to the personal experiences of the authors, the events of Hannover (2000) that marks the beginning of the exhibitions of this century, Shanghai (2010), and Milan (2015) are analyzed. The aim is to understand the role and effects that exhibition events have on the transformation of the city and the territory, at a time when a renewed concern about the future of cities exists, subject to great tensions and demands. The land destined to these events is a link to join preexisting scattered urban fragments or to create new centralities, always with the result of increasing the metropolitan area thanks to the huge investments that exhibitions catalyze. The policies and strategies employed so far including sustainability and resilience, have varied in recent decades, but the results do not seem to provide evidence that any major event has been able to satisfactorily resolve the problems of fragility originated by urban pressures on the border between nature and built space, nor the permanent–temporal dichotomy that reach a key relevance in the planning of events.

Hepatitis C virus present in the sera of infected patients interferes with the autophagic process of monocytes impairing their in-vitro differentiation into dendritic cells

    Get PDF
AbstractAutophagy has a pivotal role in the in-vitro monocyte differentiation into macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs), the most powerful antigen presenting cells (APC) with the unique capacity to initiate an adaptive immune response. Autophagy is also a mechanism by which these cells of innate immunity may degrade intracellular pathogens and mediate the antigen processing and presentation, essential to clear an infection. For these reasons, pathogens have learned how to manipulate autophagy for their own survival. In this study we found that hepatitis C virus (HCV), derived from sera of infected patients, blocked the autophagic process in differentiating monocytes, seen as LC3 II and p62 expression levels. The suppression of autophagy correlated with a reduction of cathepsins D, B and proteolytic activity, and resulted in impairment of monocyte differentiation into DCs, as indicated by the reduction of CD1a acquirement. These data suggest that the block of autophagy might be one of the underlying mechanisms of the HCV-mediated immune subversion that frequently leads to viral persistence and chronic hepatitis

Peritoneal and hematogenous metastases of ovarian cancer cells are both controlled by the p90RSK through a self-reinforcing cell autonomous mechanism

The molecular mechanisms orchestrating peritoneal and hematogenous metastases of ovarian cancer cells are assumed to be distinct. We studied the p90RSK family of serine/threonine kinases that lie downstream the RAS-ERK/MAPK pathway and modulate a variety of cellular processes including cell proliferation, survival, motility and invasiveness. We found the RSK1 and RSK2 isoforms expressed in a number of human ovarian cancer cell lines, where they played redundant roles in sustaining in vitro motility and invasiveness. In vivo, silencing of both RSK1 and RSK2 almost abrogated short-term and long-term metastatic engraftment of ovarian cancer cells in the peritoneum. In addition, RSK1/RSK2 silenced cells failed to colonize the lungs after intravenous injection and to form hematogenous metastasis from subcutaneous xenografts. RSK1/RSK2 suppression resulted in lessened ovarian cancer cell spreading on endogenous fibronectin (FN). Mechanistically, RSK1/RSK2 knockdown diminished FN transcription, α5β1 integrin activation and TGF-β1 translation. Reduced endogenous FN deposition and TGF-β1 secretion depended on the lack of activating phosphorylation of the transcription/translation factor YB-1 by p90RSK. Altogether data show how p90RSK activates a self-reinforcing cell autonomous pro-adhesive circuit necessary for metastatic seeding of ovarian cancer cells. Thus, p90RSK inhibitors might hinder both the hematogenous and the peritoneal metastatic spread of human ovarian cancer

Impact of the −174 G > C IL-6 Polymorphism on Bioelectrical Parameters in Obese Subjects after Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Background. Recent data demonstrated that the −174 G > C IL-6 polymorphism may account for differences in the therapeutic response to laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) surgery. Objective. We investigated the impact of −174 G > C IL-6 polymorphism on weight loss, body composition, and fluid distribution changes in obese subjects after LAGB. Design and Outcome Measures. Twenty obese subjects were selected and studied at baseline and 3 months after LAGB. Genetic assessment of −174 G > C IL-6 polymorphism and anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed. Results. At baseline, C(+) carriers had a lower extracellular water (ECW) and higher intra-CW, phase angle (PA), reactance Xc, and Xc/height. LAGB surgery determined significant reductions in weight and BMI. After LAGB, in C(−) carriers, significant decreases in weight, BMI, and ECW and increases in BCM, BCMI, ICW, PA, and Xc/H were highlighted. In C(+) carriers, significant reductions in weight, BMI, ICW, and PA and increases in ECW, Na/K, resistance (R), and R/height were obtained. Significant higher reductions in BMI and Xc/H were observed in C(+) with respect to C(−) carriers. Conclusions. Genotyping of genetic variants, for example, the −174 G > C polymorphism of IL-6, gives the opportunity to predict therapeutic response, in terms of body composition outcomes after LAGB
