Women on the Move. Contributions to the aestheticpolitical activism approach of Brazilian migrant women

    Get PDF
This research project as a qualitative approach, anchored in the theoretical-methodological perspective of life-histories, and aims to reflect on the aesthetic-political activism of female Brazilian activist artists with a history of migration, in order to understand the meanings, concepts and processes of said activism, as well as the representations reflected in different experiences. The study may offer clues to think about the situation of women and, above all, discuss the importance of the arts in the emancipatory processes of migrant women. The research instruments adopted were: semi-structured interviews, field diary and photographic records. Five interviews were conducted via the web, which were transcribed and analyzed in the light of content analysis. The results reveal a multiplicity of experiences that are expressed through performances, occupations of the urban space, music, netativism, video-installation, among others. Aesthetic-political activism is conceived as an action that materializes in aesthetic expressions with an inherently political character, centered on the fight against social inequalities and oppression relations, as well as the creation of other discourses, representations and spaces capable of subverting the instituted social order

Palavras-chave: Vulnerabilidade ao Stress; Conhecimentos; Visita de Enfermagem Pré- Operatória.ABSTRACT The welfare of the patient should constitute the main goal of the professionals that take care of the surgical patient, because on the pre-operative period may present stress levels, as well as develop feelings that could negatively act on their emotional state, making them vulnerable. So, this untitled “Vulnerability to Stress of the Surgical Patient on the postoperative period”, pretended specifically evaluate the kind of knowledge about the anesthetic act that the patients own; check in what measurement the socio-demographic variables have significant effect on the stress vulnerability of the patients and analyze the relation between clinical variables and stress vulnerability of the patient on post-operative period. The study is quantitative, transverse and descriptive. The sample is non probabilistic, constituted by 180 patients, admitted on Surgery 1 and Surgery 2 services for programmed surgery on Hospital Centre Tondela-Viseu, EPE (CHTV, EPE), Viseu’s Unit. The data collection is constituted by a questionnaire of socio-demographic and clinical characterization of the patient, one evaluation questionnaire about the knowledge about the anesthetic act and the Stress Vulnerability Scale 23 QVS (Vaz Serra, 2000). On the sample, feminine gender is slightly superior in relation to masculine gender, respectively with 55.6% and 44.4%, with an age average of 57.25 years old. Most of the patients are “married” or “unmarried” 73.9% mostly live in “countryside” 62.2% and 48.9% has the “4th grade”. We checked that 64.4% already fad surgical experiences and we infer that 69.4% of the patients have knowledge about the anesthetic act, 25.0% have good knowledge and were acquired through de health professionals (28.8%). We found that 59.4% of the patients had nursing pre-operative visit. The Stress vulnerability on the patient during the pre-operative period is influenced by age, (the higher the age, higher the vulnerability), civil status (divorced/widowers show a higher vulnerability) and qualifications (surgical patients who can’t read or write are the most vulnerable). Patients who had nursing pre-operative visit are the most vulnerable to stress, however without statistic relevance. We infer that patients with good knowledge have less stress vulnerability. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene, homocysteine and coronary artery disease: the A1298C polymorphism does matter. Inferences from a case study (Madeira, Portugal)

    Get PDF
Elevated levels of plasma homocysteine, an independent risk factor and a strong predictor of mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), can result from nutritional deficiencies or genetic errors, including methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T and A1298C polymorphisms. The contribution of these polymorphisms in the development of CAD remains controversial. We analysed the impact of MTHFR C677T and A1298C on fasting homocysteine and CAD in 298 CAD patients proved by angiography and 510 control subjects from the Island of Madeira (Portugal). After adjustment for other risk factors, plasma homocysteine remained independently correlated with CAD. Serum homocysteine was significantly higher in individuals with 677TT and 1298AA genotypes. There was no difference in the distribution of MTHFR677 genotypes between cases and controls but a significant increase in 1298AA prevalence was found in CAD patients. In spite of the clear effect of C677T mutation on elevated homocysteine levels we only found an association between 1298AA genotype and CAD in this population. The simultaneous presence of 677CT and 1298AA genotypes provides a significant risk of developing the disease, while the 1298AC genotype, combined with 677CC, shows a significant trend towards a decrease in CAD occurrence. The data shows an independent association between elevated levels of homocysteine and CAD. Both MTHFR polymorphisms are associated with increased fasting homocysteine (677TT and 1298AA genotypes), but only the 1298AA variant shows an increased prevalence in CAD group. Odds ratio seem to indicate that individuals with the MTHFR 1298AA genotype and the 677CT/1298AA compound genotype had a 1.6-fold increased risk for developing CAD suggesting a possible association of MTHFR polymorphisms with the risk of CAD in Madeira population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Resultados e Discussão:Foram avaliadas 222 crianças, a maioria do sexo masculino (63,1%). Introduction: The Infancy and Early Childhood Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic at the Oporto Hospital Centre’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry opened in 2007. Our aim is to characterize the first consultations between June 2012 and June 2013. Methods: Review of clinical files and collection of demographic and medical data; diagnostic evaluation according to the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Development Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood: Revised Edition; statistical analysis using SPSS v.19.0. Results and Discussion: Two hundred and twenty-two children were evaluated and 63.1% were male. The main reasons for referral to consultation were children with no specific symptoms included in institutional protocols (43.7%) and language disorders (12.6%). Forty-nine (22.1%) had psychopathology, namely: Regulation Disorder of Sensory Processing (38.8%), Disorder of Affect (24.5%) and Disorder of Relating and Communicating (22.4%). In 57 cases (33.0%) there were alterations solely at the relational level, mostly underinvolved (16.2%). Eighty-eight (39.6%) showed Global Developmental Delay, and the scale of hearing / language was the most affected (54.1%). Compared to the previous study, the average age of referral was lower, which may be indicative of greater professional and community awareness. We observed fewer children with Axis I diagnosis but an equivalent number of those with relational difficulties. Conclusion: Most children referred were under the age of three and presented clinical indicators of mental suffering. In the last years, mental health in early childhood has been an area of growing investment, namely in the early identification of risk groups and signs of mental suffering, allowing mental carers to intervene preemptively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Integrative approach for sustainable viticulture in Portugalˈs Douro Valley: The NOVATERRA approach in mountain viticulture

    Get PDF
United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal number 12 pledges to ensure the sustainability of production and consumption of the food system. Towards more sustainable agriculture, a reduction of contentious pesticides, increasing spray application efficiency, and supporting strategies for integrated control is required. This can be obtained by developing innovative eco-friendly strategies that protect both the environment and human health. In this sense, SOGRAPE, a family-owned wine company, is a partner of project NOVATERRA (funded by EU’s Horizon 2020), aiming at improving the sustainability of viticulture by integrating new plant protection products (PPPs) of natural origin, biodiversity conservation, precision agriculture, robotics, and integrated soil and crop management strategies. NOVATERRA project trials have been made at SOGRAPE’s Quinta do Seixo, located in Cima Corgo, central sub-region of the Douro valley. This project is based in a practical and integrative approach, promoting multivariate case studies, in real scale trials executed by SOGRAPE to maximize adoption of successful solutions obtained from case studies. In this way, SOGRAPE engages in promoting the sustainability of the viticulture sector, working on several assignments of the project. The novel approaches assessed in NOVATERRA project work for the same goal of paving the way towards increasingly sustainable agriculture, combined into an integrated vine protection strategy

Flowering under stress: phenomics and proteomics approaches to chickpea grain yield and quality.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a major player in the FAO Zero Hunger program “toolkit”. It is the second most cultivated food legume, a source of sustainable protein (and other nutrients) and contributes to improved soil health and lower fertilization input. Grain yield, seed protein content and nutritional quality were found to be largely affected by Genotype x Environment. In the Mediterranean regions, higher frequency, intensity and duration of droughts, as well as hotter droughts are being registered, thus interfering with agroecosystems’ structure, composition, and functions. A controlled conditions assay (non-invasive phenotyping@PhenoLab) was undertaken in two genotypes from the Portuguese chickpea breeding program (Elvas, INIAV). Results revealed that high temperature (32º C during the reproductive phase) and water regime (40% vs 10% soil water content) play a significant role in chickpea development, seed production and composition, and protein content. As seed biochemical signatures allow to discriminate between genotypes, the power protein-based methodologies in genotype assessment are highlighted. Because some proteins can resist gastrointestinal digestion and influence human health, the processed seed proteome (i.e. following soaking, boiling and in-vitro digestion) in three consecutive years was further analysed in field-grown chickpeas (Elvas, INIAV). The seed proteome was found to be highly conserved, with minor changes being attributed to the seed development conditions. Furthermore, in vitro digestion efficiently removed many anti-nutritional proteins. Combined phenotyping and omic´s approaches contribute to the mechanistic knowledge of how severe terminal drought and high temperature modulate sink capacity and productivity (yield and quality). The integrated use of phenomics and omics methodologies has significant potential to increase our understanding of plant growth and development and, thus, an efficient, knowledge-based management of crops and resources.Work supported by EMPHASIS-GO (HORIZON-INFRA-2021-DEV-02 contract n. 101079772), by the European Plant Phenotyping Network 2020 (EXCELLENT SCIENCE - Research Infrastructures contract n. 731013) and by national funds from FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. namelly: UCIBIO – Research Unit on Applied Molecular Biosciences (FCT UIDP/04378/2020; FCT UIDB/04378/ 2020); 4HB - Associate Laboratory Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (FCT LA/P/0140/2020); LEAF – Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food (FCT UID/AGR/04129/2020); PhD fellowship SFRH/BD/70345/2010.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This work constitutes itself as a part of a wider investigation that discusses aesthetic-political activism and the role of music in the forms of expression of the struggles for equality. In this sense, this article discusses the relationships between music and aesthetic-political activism, from a look of the singular paths of two women who are activists and musicians. Thus, we seek to understand the nature of the processes, the meanings and representations existing in the paths taken, in order to refl ect on the extent to which music infl uences the processes of social emancipation and on which confi gurations of aesthetic-political activism are permeated by diverse identity processes. This is a case study, with a qualitative approach, based on the experiences of two Brazilian women artists, from the theoretical-methodological perspective of life stories. The results show us that the path of the interviewees has been marked by various forms and dynamics of subversion and resistance that are inscribed within an unequal context of the Global South, where inequalities and the structural domination of masculinity and patriarchy tend to prevail

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition knowledge among health professionals has a major impact on older adults’ healthcare. However, there is a lack of specialized education offer in this area. Within the Nutrition UP 65 Project, a health professional’s qualification nutrition course was created and implemented from April 2015 to April 2017. We aim to describe this process here. METHODOLOGY: At Faculdade de Ciências da Nutrição e Alimentação da Universidade do Porto, a course of twenty-seven hours was created by six professors. The course comprises eight hours of direct contact and nineteen hours of individual study and was accredited by the University of Porto and credited with one European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Educational materials and presentations for each session were produced including posters and flyers. A final test was developed to evaluate attendee’s knowledge. Approximately 10% of national health units were identified, randomly selected in each country regional area (NUTS II – “Nomenclatura Comum das Unidades Territoriais para Fins Estatísticos”) and invited to participate. RESULTS: Thirty-five course editions were carried out by twenty-three Porto University accredited instructors for 784 professionals from 241 different health units. Concerning the knowledge evaluation, a 99% approval rate was achieved and the average mark score was of 16.8 out of 20. Course satisfaction survey revealed that 45.7% of the participants classified the course as “good” and 41.1% as “very good”. CONCLUSIONS: The overall balance of this branch of the Nutrition UP 65 project is very positive. The results on health professional’s adherence demonstrate that the interest in this area of nutrition care is high and that this nutrition course is a good opportunity to expand access to specialized education. This highlights the need for further initiatives promoting educational sessions targeting nutrition topics. These course sessions must be acknowledged as a starting point to a new approach in older adult’s nutrition knowledge in Portugal.INTRODUÇÃO: O conhecimento sobre nutrição dos profissionais de saúde tem um grande impacto na saúde dos indivíduos idosos. CONCLUSÕES: O balanço global desta vertente do Projeto Nutrition UP 65 é muito positivo.
