    Case report: Fatal Borna virus encephalitis manifesting with basal brain and brainstem symptoms

    BackgroundSince the first report of fatal Borna virus-1 (BoDV-1) encephalitis in 2018, cases gradually increased. There is a lack of diagnostic algorithm, and there is no effective treatment so far.Case presentationWe report an acute BoDV-1 encephalitis in a 77-year-old female with flu-like onset, rapid progression to word-finding difficulties, personality changes, global disorientation, diffuse cognitive slowness, and gait ataxia and further deterioration with fever, meningism, severe hyponatremia, epileptic seizures, cognitive decline, and focal cortical and cerebellar symptoms/signs. The extensive diagnostic workup (cerebrovascular fluid, serum, and MRI) for (meningo-)encephalitis was negative for known causes. Our empirical common antiviral, antimicrobial, and immunosuppressive treatment efforts failed. The patient fell into coma 5 days after admission, lost all brainstem reflexes on day 18, remained fully dependent on invasive mechanical ventilation thereafter and died on day 42. Brain and spinal cord autopsy confirmed an extensive, diffuse, and severe non-purulent, lymphocytic sclerosing panencephalomyelitis due to BoDV-1, affecting neocortical, subcortical, cerebellar, neurohypophysis, and spinal cord areas. Along with our case, we critically reviewed all reported BoDV-1 encephalitis cases.ConclusionThe diagnosis of acute BoDV-1 encephalitis is challenging and delayed, while it progresses to fatal. In this study, we list all tried and failed treatments so far for future reference and propose a diagnostic algorithm for prompt suspicion and diagnosis

    First observation of a doubly charged tetraquark and its neutral partner

    A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B0→D‟0Ds+π−B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 D^+_s\pi^- and B+→D−Ds+π+B^+\rightarrow D^- D^+_s\pi^+, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV\,\rm{TeV}. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1\,\rm{fb^{-1}}. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020 GeV2.908\pm0.011\pm0.020\,\rm{GeV} and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.011 GeV0.136\pm0.023\pm0.011\,\rm{GeV} are observed, which decay to Ds+π+D^+_s\pi^+ and Ds+π−D^+_s\pi^- respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [csˉudˉ][c\bar{s}u\bar{d}], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [csˉuˉd][c\bar{s}\bar{u}d] quarks.     Search for the doubly heavy baryon Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} decaying to J/ψΞc+J/\it{\psi} \it{\Xi}_{c}^{+}

    A first search for the Ξbc+→J/ψΞc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+}\to J/\it{\psi}\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} decay is performed by the LHCb experiment with a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1} recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV13\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}. Two peaking structures are seen with a local (global) significance of 4.3 (2.8)4.3\,(2.8) and 4.1 (2.4)4.1\,(2.4) standard deviations at masses of 6571 MeV ⁣/c26571\,\mathrm{Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2 and 6694 MeV ⁣/c26694\,\mathrm{Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2, respectively. Upper limits are set on the Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} baryon production cross-section times the branching fraction relative to that of the Bc+→J/ψDs+B_{c}^{+}\to J/\it{\psi} D_{s}^{+} decay at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV13\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, in the Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} and in the Bc+B_{c}^{+} rapidity and transverse-momentum ranges from 2.0 to 4.5 and 0 to 20 GeV ⁣/c20\,\mathrm{Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c, respectively.     Search for D∗(2007)0→Ό+Ό−D^{*}(2007)^0\to\mu^+\mu^- in B−→π−Ό+Ό−B^-\to\pi^-\mu^+\mu^- decays

    The very rare D∗(2007)0→Ό+Ό−D^{*}(2007)^0\to\mu^+\mu^- decay is searched for by analysing B−→π−Ό+Ό−B^-\to\pi^-\mu^+\mu^- decays. The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the ÎŒ+Ό−\mu^+\mu^- and π−Ό+Ό−\pi^-\mu^+\mu^- invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at B(D∗(2007)0→Ό+Ό−)<2.6×10−8{\cal B}(D^{*}(2007)^0\to\mu^+\mu^-) < 2.6\times 10^{-8} at 90%90\% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of D∗(2007)0→Ό+Ό−D^{*}(2007)^0\to\mu^+\mu^- decays and the most stringent limit on D∗(2007)0D^{*}(2007)^0 decays to leptonic final states.     Observation of the Bs0 ⁣→D∗+D∗−B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-} decay

    The first observation of the Bs0 ⁣→D∗+D∗−B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-} decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the B0 ⁣→D∗+D∗−B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-} decay are presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1\,\text{fb}^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV\,\text{TeV} between 2011 and 2018. The decay is observed with a very high significance and the ratio of branching fractions is determined to be \begin{align*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})} = 0.269 \pm 0.032 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008\, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio fs/fdf_s/f_d. The Bs0 ⁣→D∗+D∗−B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-} branching fraction is calculated to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}) = (2.15 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} \,, \end{align*} where the fourth uncertainty is due to the B0 ⁣→D∗+D∗−B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-} branching fraction.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-023.html (LHCb public pages

    Amplitude analysis of B0→D‟0Ds+π−B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 D_s^+ \pi^- and B+→D−Ds+π+B^+ \rightarrow D^- D_s^+ \pi^+ decays

    Resonant contributions in B0→D‟0Ds+π−B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 D^+_s\pi^- and B+→D−Ds+π+B^+\rightarrow D^- D^+_s\pi^+ decays are determined with an amplitude analysis, which is performed both separately and simultaneously, where in the latter case isospin symmetry between the decays is assumed. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV\rm{TeV}. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1\rm fb^{-1}.     Measurement of ϒ production in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV

    Abstract: The production cross-sections of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 277 ± 11 pb−1 recorded by the LHCb experiment in 2015. The ϒ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode ϒ → ÎŒ+Ό−. The differential production cross-sections times the dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the ϒ transverse momentum, pT, and rapidity, y, over the range 0 < pT< 30 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The ratios of the cross-sections with respect to the LHCb measurement at s=8 TeV are also determined. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions based on NRQCD
