    Measurement of Charge Distributions in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed Using Wire-Mesh Electrostatic Sensors

    In order to maintain safe and efficient operation of a fluidized bed, electrostatic charges in the bed should be monitored continuously. Electrostatic sensors with wire-mesh electrodes are introduced in this paper to measure the charge distribution in the cross section of the fluidized bed. A Finite Element Model is built to investigate the sensing characteristics of the wire-mesh sensors. In comparison with conventional electrostatic sensors, wire-mesh sensors have higher and more uniform sensitivity distribution. Based on the induced charges on the electrodes and the sensitivity distributions of the sensors, the charge distribution in the cross section of the fluidized bed is reconstructed. However, it is difficult to directly measure the induced charges on the electrodes. A charge calibration process is conducted to establish the relationship between the induced charge on the electrode and the electrostatic signal. Experimental studies of charge distribution measurement were conducted on a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed. The electrostatic signals from the wire-mesh sensors in the dense phase and splash regions of the bed for different fluidization air flow rates were obtained. Based on the results obtained from the charge calibration process, the estimated induced charges on the electrodes are calculated from the Root Mean Square values of the electrostatic signals. The characteristics of the induced charges on the electrodes and the charge distribution in the cross section under different flow conditions are investigated, which proves that wire-mesh electrostatic sensors are able to measure the charge distribution in the bubbling fluidized bed

    The "double-edged sword" effects of career support mentoring on newcomer turnover: How and when it helps or hurts.

    Research on mentoring programs has portrayed them almost exclusively beneficial for newcomer retention. Drawing from the social cognitive model of career management and the boundaryless career perspective, we depart from this predominant view and examine the "double-edged sword" effects of career support mentoring on newcomer turnover. We propose that career support mentoring received by newcomers is likely to elicit both internal proactive socialization and external career self-management, which act as countervailing forces driving newcomer turnover in opposite directions (i.e., the retention pathway and the unintended detrimental pathway). We further propose that the organizational role of the mentor-supervisor versus nonsupervisor-is critical in determining which pathway prevails. We conducted two multiwave newcomer studies to test our hypotheses. In Study 1 ( = 495), we found that received career support mentoring was associated with lower newcomer turnover probability through the serial mediation of internal proactive socialization and perceived internal marketability but higher newcomer turnover probability through the serial mediation of external career self-management and perceived external marketability. In Study 2 ( = 193), we found that received career support mentoring was associated with lower newcomer turnover intention through the serial mediation of internal career advancement expectation and internal proactive socialization but higher newcomer turnover intention through the serial mediation of external career advancement expectation and external career self-management.     Perceived organizational career management and career adaptability as predictors of success and turnover intention among Chinese employees

    Based on the theories of career construction and of social exchange, the current research examined the joint and interactive effects of perceived organizational career management and career adaptability on indicators of career success (i.e., salary and career satisfaction) and work attitudes (i.e., turnover intention) among 654 Chinese employees. The results showed that career adaptability played a unique role in predicting salary after controlling for the effects of demographic variables and perceived organizational career management. It was also found that both perceived organizational career management and career adaptability correlated negatively with turnover intention, with these relationships mediated by career satisfaction. The results further showed that career adaptability moderated the relationship between perceived organizational career management and career satisfaction such that this positive relationship was stronger among employees with a higher level of career adaptability. In support of the hypothesized moderated mediation model, for employees with a higher level of career adaptability, the indirect effect of perceived career management on turnover intention through career satisfaction was stronger.     Public views of the Sustainable Development Goals across countries

    The United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer an extensive framework for coordinating and shaping government policies, and for engaging the public with sustainability. Public understanding of the SDGs and sustainability can influence this engagement, as people are more likely to accept and share information consistent with their own understanding. We identify public understandings of SDGs through mental maps of how people relate the SDGs to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Using responses from 12 developed/developing countries (n = 2,134), we identified four mental maps that varied mainly on two dimensions, which diverged from some expert models. Some people’s mental maps identified tension between achieving environmental versus social sustainability, whereas for others the tension was between economic sustainability and the other two sustainability elements. Some people related different SDGs to each element of sustainability, whereas others saw all SDGs as targeting the same sustainability element(s). These findings highlight opportunities and challenges to engage the public with sustainability more effectively, especially with wide-ranging initiatives such as a Green New Deal. We observed cultural differences but we also identified a dominant mental map across countries that could serve as a default model for communicating sustainability internationally

    Big-five personality and BIS/BAS traits as predictors of career exploration: The mediation role of career adaptability

    Based on career construction theory, the current research examined whether career adaptability mediates the relations of the personality traits (Five-Factor Model personality traits and behavioral inhibition and activation systems (BIS/BAS)) to career exploration behavior. Results from a survey in Chinese university students (N = 264) showed that career exploration correlated negatively with neuroticism, and positively with openness to experience, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and BAS. Results of regression analyses further showed that openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness and BAS served as the strongest predictors for career exploration. In addition, career adaptability was shown to be a key mediator for the relationships between personality traits and career exploration behavior. Career concern and career curiosity were the more important dimensions in the mediation model.     Three-dimensional full loop simulation of solids circulation in an interconnected fluidized bed

    -D full loop CFD simulation of solids circulation is conducted in a complicated circulating-fluidized bed, which consists of a riser, a bubbling bed, a cyclone and a loop-seal. The effects of operating gas velocity, particle size and total solids inventory on the solids circulation rate are investigated based on the system pressure balance of an interconnected fluidized bed. CFD results indicate that the gas velocity in the riser plays a dominant role in controlling the solids circulation rate, whilst the gas velocity in the pot-seal influences in a narrow operating range. The solids circulation rate is strongly influenced by particle size and total solids inventory, but becomes insensitive to the operating conditions in the bubbling bed when the gas velocity is higher than the minimum fluidization velocity

    Career adaptability and perceived overqualification: Testing a dual-path model among Chinese human resource management professionals

    Based on career construction theory, the current research examined the relationship between career adaptability and perceived overqualification among a sample of Chinese human resource management professionals (N = 220). The results of a survey study showed that career adaptability predicted perceived overqualification through a dual-path model: On the one hand, career adaptability positively predicted employees' perceived delegation, which had a subsequent negative effect on perceived overqualification. At the same time, career adaptability also positively predicted career anchor in challenge, which in turn positively predicted overqualification. This dual-path mediation model provides a novel perspective to understand the mechanisms through which career adaptability affects perceived overqualification, and demonstrates the coexistence of opposite effects in this process. In addition, the results also showed that the effects of perceived delegation and career anchor in challenge on perceived overqualification were stronger among employees with a higher (vs. lower) level of organizational tenure. These findings carry implications for both career development theories and organizational management practices

    Searching for the nano-Hertz stochastic gravitational wave background with the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array Data Release I

    Observing and timing a group of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with high rotational stability enables the direct detection of gravitational waves (GWs). The GW signals can be identified from the spatial correlations encoded in the times-of-arrival of widely spaced pulsar-pairs. The Chinese Pulsar Timing Array (CPTA) is a collaboration aiming at the direct GW detection with observations carried out using Chinese radio telescopes. This short article serves as a `table of contents' for a forthcoming series of papers related to the CPTA Data Release 1 (CPTA DR1) which uses observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Here, after summarizing the time span and accuracy of CPTA DR1, we report the key results of our statistical inference finding a correlated signal with amplitude \log A_{\rm c}= -14.4 \,^{+1.0}_{-2.8} for spectral index in the range of α∈[−1.8,1.5]\alpha\in [-1.8, 1.5] assuming a GW background (GWB) induced quadrupolar correlation. The search for the Hellings-Downs (HD) correlation curve is also presented, where some evidence for the HD correlation has been found that a 4.6-σ\sigma statistical significance is achieved using the discrete frequency method around the frequency of 14 nHz. We expect that the future International Pulsar Timing Array data analysis and the next CPTA data release will be more sensitive to the nHz GWB, which could verify the current results.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, submitted to "Research in astronomy and astrophysics" 22nd March 202
