Electrografting of BTSE: Zn films for advanced steel-aluminum joining by plastic deformation
This article presents the application of an adhesion promoting highly crosslinked ultrathin organic-inorganic hybrid layer applied to steel which promotes the subsequent joining process based on plastic deformation. The tensile shear results show that a significant increase of the bond strength between low-alloy steel (DC04) and aluminum (AW1050A H111), upon cold-pressure welding (CPW), could be achieved. Electrografting of an ultra-thin film of 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE) films on the steel surface was done from ethanolic solutions containing zinc ions. Based on surface spectroscopic analysis it is shown that silanol moieties present in the organosilane deposits can form stable chemical bonds with both the iron oxide covered steel and the aluminum oxide covered aluminum alloy. The successful modification of metal oxide surfaces with BTSE has been demonstrated via SEM-EDX, AFM, PM-IRRAS, and XPS measurements. In addition, electrochemical analysis of the BTSE:Zn films showed that the films lead to very good corrosion properties even at low thicknesses
Modelling molecule-surface interactions-an automated quantum-classical approach using a genetic algorithm
We present an automated and efficient method to develop force fields for molecule-surface interactions. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to parameterise a classical force field so that the classical adsorption energy landscape of a molecule on a surface matches the corresponding landscape from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The procedure performs a sophisticated search in the parameter phase space and converges very quickly. The method is capable of fitting a significant number of structures and corresponding adsorption energies. Water on a ZnO(0001) surface was chosen as a benchmark system but the method is implemented in a flexible way and can be applied to any system of interest. In the present case, pairwise Lennard Jones (LJ) and Coulomb potentials are used to describe the molecule-surface interactions. In the course of the fitting procedure, the LJ parameters are refined in order to reproduce the adsorption energy landscape. The classical model is capable of describing a wide range of energies, which is essential for a realistic description of a fluid-solid interface
States and Boundary Terms: Subtleties of Lorentzian AdS/CFT
We complete the project of specifying the Lorentzian AdS/CFT correspondence
and its approximation by bulk semi-classical methods begun by earlier authors.
At the end, the Lorentzian treatment is self-contained and requires no analytic
continuation from the Euclidean. The new features involve a careful study of
boundary terms associated with an initial time and a final time .
These boundary terms are determined by a choice of quantum states. The main
results in the semi-classical approximation are 1) The times may be
finite, and need only label Cauchy surfaces respectively to the past and future
of the points at which one wishes to obtain CFT correlators. Subject to this
condition on , we provide a bulk computation of CFT correlators that is
manifestly independent of . 2) As a result of (1), all CFT correlators
can be expressed in terms of a path integral over regions of spacetime {\it
outside} of any black hole horizons. 3) The details of the boundary terms at
serve to guarrantee that, at leading order in this approximation, any
CFT one-point function is given by a simple boundary value of the classical
bulk solution at null infinity, . This work is dedicated to the memory of
Bryce S. DeWitt. The remarks in this paper largely study the relation of the
AdS/CFT dictionary to the Schwinger variational principle, which the author
first learned from DeWitt as a Ph.D. student.Comment: 31 pages, JHEP style, various typos correcte
Oxidation resistance of graphene-coated Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
The ability to protect refined metals from reactive environments is vital to
many industrial and academic applications. Current solutions, however,
typically introduce several negative effects, including increased thickness and
changes in the metal physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the
first time the ability of graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition to
protect the surface of the metallic growth substrates of Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
from air oxidation. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies show that the
metal surface is well protected from oxidation even after heating at 200
\degree C in air for up to 4 hours. Our work further shows that graphene
provides effective resistance against hydrogen peroxide. This protection method
offers significant advantages and can be used on any metal that catalyzes
graphene growth
Adoption of Electronic Medical Record-Based Decision Support for Otitis Media in Children
Substantial investment in electronic health records (EHRs) has provided an unprecedented opportunity to use clinical decision support (CDS) to increase guideline adherence. To inform efforts to maximize adoption, we characterized the adoption of an otitis media (OM) CDS system, the impact of performance feedback on adoption, and the effects of adoption on guideline adherence
Wiring of Photosystem II to Hydrogenase for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.
In natural photosynthesis, light is used for the production of chemical energy carriers to fuel biological activity. The re-engineering of natural photosynthetic pathways can provide inspiration for sustainable fuel production and insights for understanding the process itself. Here, we employ a semiartificial approach to study photobiological water splitting via a pathway unavailable to nature: the direct coupling of the water oxidation enzyme, photosystem II, to the H2 evolving enzyme, hydrogenase. Essential to this approach is the integration of the isolated enzymes into the artificial circuit of a photoelectrochemical cell. We therefore developed a tailor-made hierarchically structured indium-tin oxide electrode that gives rise to the excellent integration of both photosystem II and hydrogenase for performing the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, respectively. When connected together with the aid of an applied bias, the semiartificial cell demonstrated quantitative electron flow from photosystem II to the hydrogenase with the production of H2 and O2 being in the expected two-to-one ratio and a light-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 5.4% under low-intensity red-light irradiation. We thereby demonstrate efficient light-driven water splitting using a pathway inaccessible to biology and report on a widely applicable in vitro platform for the controlled coupling of enzymatic redox processes to meaningfully study photocatalytic reactions. This work was supported by the U.K. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EP/H00338X/2 to E.R. and EP/G037221/1, nanoDTC, to D.M.), the UK Biology and Biotechnological Sciences Research Council (BB/K002627/1 to A.W.R. and BB/K010220/1 to E.R.), a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (PIEF-GA-2013-625034 to C.Y.L), a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship (PIIF-GA-2012-328085 RPSII to J.J.Z) and the CEA and the CNRS (to J.C.F.C.). Teaching and Learning of Calculus
This survey focuses on the main trends in the field of calculus education. Despite their variety, the findings reveal a cornerstone issue that is strongly linked to the formalism of calculus concepts and to the difficulties it generates in the learning and teaching process. As a complement to the main text, an extended bibliography with some of the most important references on this topic is included. Since the diversity of the research in the field makes it difficult to produce an exhaustive state-of-the-art summary, the authors discuss recent developments that go beyond this survey and put forward new research questions
