AIMS OF THE STUDY Swiss DAWN2™ aimed to evaluate the difficulties and unmet needs of individuals with diabetes and stakeholders, based on the assessments of diabetes care and self-management: the individual burden of disease, the perception of the quality of medical care, and the treatment satisfaction of individuals with diabetes living in the Canton of Bern. The results of the Swiss cohort were analysed and compared with the global DAWN2™ results. METHODS 239 adult individuals with diabetes were enrolled in a cross-sectional study at the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism at the University Hospital of Bern between 2015 and 2017. The participants completed validated online questionnaires regarding health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-3L) and emotional distress (PAID-5), diabetes self-care activities (SDSCA-6), treatment satisfaction (PACIC-DSF), and health-related wellbeing (WHO-5). Eligibility criteria were as follows: participants were aged >18 years, had a diagnosis of diabetes type 1 or 2 since at least 12 months and gave written informed for the participation in the present study. RESULTS When compared globally, the Swiss cohort reported a higher quality of life (77.28 ± 16.73 vs. 69.3 ± 17.9 EQ-5D-3L score, p 7% correlated to emotional distress (PAID-5, 26.08 ± 23.37 vs. 18.80 ± 17.49, p = 0.024), unfavourable eating habits (4.28 ± 2.22 vs. 4.99 ± 2.15, p = 0.034) and decreased physical activity (3.95 ± 2.16 vs. 4.72 ± 1.92, p = 0.014). Sleeping problems were most commonly reported (35.6%). In total, 28.8% of respondents completed diabetes-related educational programs. CONCLUSION In global comparison, Swiss DAWN2™ showed a lower burden of disease and yet a higher level of treatment satisfaction in patients who were treated in Switzerland. Further studies are required to assess the quality of diabetes treatment and unmet needs in patients treated outside of a tertiary care center

Demand-side management ("DSM") is a strategy that electric and natural gas utilities employ to decrease or defer demand for their energy services. South Carolina's three large investor-owned electric utilities (Duke Energy Carolinas, Progress Energy Carolinas, and South Carolina Electric & Gas Company) and state-owned Santee Cooper all offered a broad range of DSM programs in 2011

Japan's Orphan Tsunami of 1700: A Jello Stratigraphy Activity for K-12 Students

    Get PDF
As a Morehead Planetarium and Science Center Science Ambassador, I created an activity for middle school science students regarding Tsunamis. I presented a brief introduction to tsunamis and how they occur, and the story of Japan's "Orphan Tsunami' in 1700. Researchers scoured coastal wetlands in the Pacific NW looking for evidence of large tsunamis. They discovered tsunami deposits in several locations that dated back to around 1700. My activity involved making Jello stratigraphy layers in opaque cups, that included tsunami sand (sprinkles) and fossils (shell shaped pasta). Students used straws to take core samples of their "wetland sediment layers) and looked for tsunami sand. Spoons were included so the students could dig trenches in their sediment layers

Development and psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale: a new measure for assessing positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy

This dissertation reports on the development of a new self-report questionnaire measure of schizotypy – the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS). Schizotypy offers a useful and unifying construct for understanding schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology. Questionnaire measures have been widely used to assess schizotypy and have greatly informed our understanding of the construct; however, available measures suffer from a number of limitations, including lack of a clear conceptual framework, outdated wording, unclear factor structure, and psychometric shortcomings. The MSS is based on current conceptual models and taps positive, negative, and disorganized conceptual dimensions of schizotypy. The derivation sample included 6,265 participants sampled from four universities and Amazon Mechanical Turk. A separate cross-validation sample of 1,000 participants from these sources was used to examine the psychometric properties of the final subscales. Scale development employed classical test theory, item response theory, and differential item function methods. The positive schizotypy and negative schizotypy subscales contain 26 items each, and the disorganized schizotypy subscale contains 25 items. The psychometric properties were almost identical in the derivation and validation samples. All three subscales demonstrated good to excellent reliability, high item-scale correlations, and good item and test curve characteristics

Hybrid magnetization dynamics in Cu2OSeO3/NiFe heterostructures

We investigate the coupled magnetization dynamics in heterostructures of a single crystal of the chiral magnet Cu 2 OSeO 3 (CSO) and a polycrystalline ferromagnet NiFe (Py) thin film using broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) at cryogenic temperatures. We observe the excitation of a hybrid mode (HM) below the helimagnetic transition temperature of CSO. This HM is attributed to the spin dynamics at the CSO/Py interface. We study the HM by measuring its resonance frequencies for in plane rotations of the external magnetic field. We find that the HM exhibits dominantly fourfold anisotropy in contrast to the FMR of CSO and P
