Guidance and Control in a Josephson Charge Qubit
In this paper we propose a control strategy based on a classical guidance law
and consider its use for an example system: a Josephson charge qubit. We
demonstrate how the guidance law can be used to attain a desired qubit state

Ideal gas behavior of a strongly-coupled complex (dusty) plasma
In a laboratory, a two-dimensional complex (dusty) plasma consists of a
low-density ionized gas containing a confined suspension of Yukawa-coupled
plastic microspheres. For an initial crystal-like form, we report ideal gas
behavior in this strongly-coupled system during shock-wave experiments. This
evidence supports the use of the ideal gas law as the equation of state for

On the Interface Between LENS® Deposited Stainless Steel 304L Repair Geometry and Cast or Machined Components
Laser Engineered Net Shaping™ (LENS®) is being evaluated for use as a metal component
repair/modification process. A component of the evaluation is to better understand the characteristics of
the interface between LENS deposited material and the substrate on which it is deposited. A processing
and metallurgical evaluation was made on LENS processed material fabricated for component
qualification tests. A process parameter evaluation was used to determine optimum build parameters
and these parameters were used in the fabrication of tensile test specimens to study the characteristics of
the interface between LENS deposited material and several types of substrates. Analyses of the
interface included mechanical properties, microstructure, and metallurgical integrity. Test samples
were determined for a variety of geometric configurations associated with interfaces between LENS
deposited material and both wrought base material or previously deposited LENS material. Thirteen
different interface configurations were fabricated for evaluation representing a spectrum of deposition
conditions from complete part build, to hybrid substrate-LENS builds, to repair builds for damaged or
re-designed housings. Good mechanical properties and full density were observed for all configurations.
When tested to failure, fracture occurred by ductile microvoid coalescence. The repair and hybrid
interfaces showed the same metallurgical integrity as, and had properties similar to, monolithic LENS

Environmental factors influence both abundance and genetic diversity in a widespread bird species.
Genetic diversity is one of the key evolutionary variables that correlate with population size, being of critical importance for population viability and the persistence of species. Genetic diversity can also have important ecological consequences within populations, and in turn, ecological factors may drive patterns of genetic diversity. However, the relationship between the genetic diversity of a population and how this interacts with ecological processes has so far only been investigated in a few studies. Here, we investigate the link between ecological factors, local population size, and allelic diversity, using a field study of a common bird species, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). We studied sparrows outside the breeding season in a confined small valley dominated by dispersed farms and small-scale agriculture in southern France. Population surveys at 36 locations revealed that sparrows were more abundant in locations with high food availability. We then captured and genotyped 891 house sparrows at 10 microsatellite loci from a subset of these locations (N = 12). Population genetic analyses revealed weak genetic structure, where each locality represented a distinct substructure within the study area. We found that food availability was the main factor among others tested to influence the genetic structure between locations. These results suggest that ecological factors can have strong impacts on both population size per se and intrapopulation genetic variation even at a small scale. On a more general level, our data indicate that a patchy environment and low dispersal rate can result in fine-scale patterns of genetic diversity. Given the importance of genetic diversity for population viability, combining ecological and genetic data can help to identify factors limiting population size and determine the conservation potential of populations
Medial plica irritation: diagnosis and treatment
Medial plica irritation of the knee is a very common source of anterior knee pain. Patients can complain of pain over the anteromedial aspect of their knees and describe episodes of crepitation, catching, and pseudo-locking events with activities. Patients commonly have pain on physical examination upon rolling the plica fold of tissue over the anteromedial aspect of their knees and often have tight hamstrings. The majority of the patients will respond well to a non-operative treatment program consisting of quadriceps strengthening along with concurrent hamstring stretching. In cases which do not respond initially to an exercise program, an intraarticular steroid injection may be indicated. In those few patients who do not respond to a non-operative treatment program, an arthroscopic resection of their medial plica may be indicated, especially in those cases where a shelf-like plica has been found to be causing damage to the articular cartilage of the medial femoral condyle
Fully quantum mechanical dynamic analysis of single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a traveling-wave resonator
We analyze the dynamics of single photon transport in a single-mode waveguide
coupled to a micro-optical resonator using a fully quantum mechanical model. We
examine the propagation of a single-photon Gaussian packet through the system
under various coupling conditions. We review the theory of single photon
transport phenomena as applied to the system and we develop a discussion on the
numerical technique we used to solve for dynamical behavior of the quantized
field. To demonstrate our method and to establish robust single photon results,
we study the process of adiabatically lowering or raising the energy of a
single photon trapped in an optical resonator under active tuning of the
resonator. We show that our fully quantum mechanical approach reproduces the
semi-classical result in the appropriate limit and that the adiabatic invariant
has the same form in each case. Finally, we explore the trapping of a single
photon in a system of dynamically tuned, coupled optical cavities.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figure
Spectroscopy on two coupled flux qubits
We have performed spectroscopy measurements on two coupled flux qubits. The
qubits are coupled inductively, which results in a
interaction. By applying microwave radiation, we observe resonances due to
transitions from the ground state to the first two excited states. From the
position of these resonances as a function of the magnetic field applied we
observe the coupling of the qubits. The coupling strength agrees well with
calculations of the mutual inductance
Northern Great Plains Beef Production: Production and Marketing Practices of Cow-Calf Producers
Ruminant livestock production in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming is critical to the region's economy. Because of the economic significance of ruminant livestock production, producers in the four-state area are continually looking for opportunities to increase income and improve the viability of their farm and ranch operation. Accordingly, the Four-state Ruminant Consortium, an integrated research and extension program, was created to specifically address issues related to ruminant livestock production. One of the more widely applicable possibilities for adding value through the regions's ruminant livestock sector appears to be backgrounding feeder calves. However, while economic analysis has indicated that stockgrowers in the study area could typically increase their net returns by backgrounding feeder calves, anecdotal evidence suggests relatively few producers are presently backgrounding feeder calves. To identify the socioeconomic impediments inhibiting producers from backgrounding feeder cattle, this study sought to identify managerial, social, and institutional factors that influence and perhaps constrain producers' ability or willingness to background feeder cattle. Study objectives were to identify and document producers' current production and marketing practices as well as identify stock growers' perception of opportunities for and impediments to expansion of the ruminant livestock industry in the study area. A mail questionnaire was delivered to 5,270 livestock producers in 37 counties in the 4-state study area of southwestern North Dakota, northwestern South Dakota, southwestern Montana and northwestern Wyoming. The questionnaire was designed to solicit a wide variety of information about operators' current production practices, including marketing, backgrounding, retained ownership, herd management, and feed and forage practices. The questionnaire also solicited operators attitudes on a wide variety of issues related to opportunities for and impediments to the expansion of the ruminant livestock industry in the study area as well asking respondents to identify what types of information would be of most interest to them and in what form they would prefer that information be delivered. The questionnaire also collected basic demographic data. Rapid state purification protocols for a Cooper pair box
We propose techniques for implementing two different rapid state purification
schemes, within the constraints present in a superconducting charge qubit
system. Both schemes use a continuous measurement of charge (z) measurements,
and seek to minimize the time required to purify the conditional state. Our
methods are designed to make the purification process relatively insensitive to
rotations about the x-axis, due to the Josephson tunnelling Hamiltonian. The
first proposed method, based on the scheme of Jacobs [Phys. Rev. A 67,
030301(R) (2003)] uses the measurement results to control bias (z) pulses so as
to rotate the Bloch vector onto the x-axis of the Bloch sphere. The second
proposed method, based on the scheme of Wiseman and Ralph [New J. Phys. 8, 90
(2006)] uses a simple feedback protocol which tightly rotates the Bloch vector
about an axis almost parallel with the measurement axis. We compare the
